Posted October 2, 200717 yr Downtown Akron was a stop off on my way to Cleveland so we spent about an hour here. I would have loved to spend more time in Akron but my buddy and I wasted too much time in Canton (Big Disappointment) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Bigger Disappointment).

October 2, 200717 yr Haven't been there in a while, but I've heard Akron is picking up just a little. The Civic is great on the inside -- elaborate Italianate lobby, and an atmospheric ceiling.
October 3, 200717 yr When I stayed in Akron last month, I left with a feeling that the city was dying; of course, much of that probably comes from the closure of Quaker Square.
October 3, 200717 yr Great pics of a great city. Hoping to get some pics of the university here in 2 weeks when I head back for homecoming! Go Zips!
October 3, 200717 yr When I stayed in Akron last month, I left with a feeling that the city was dying; of course, much of that probably comes from the closure of Quaker Square. If you stayed downtown I'm sure you felt that way. Everything is located outside of downtown.
October 3, 200717 yr In that case, montecarloss is the king of quickies. King Quickie. When I stayed in Akron last month, I left with a feeling that the city was dying; of course, much of that probably comes from the closure of Quaker Square. If you stayed downtown I'm sure you felt that way. Everything is located outside of downtown. Well, that says something.
October 3, 200717 yr ? What's another way? LOL... That was a response for Rando. I guess it serves me right for not quoting him.

October 6, 200717 yr I just thought this pick was kinda scary with the 1 car on the highway.... almost like a ghost-town
October 6, 200717 yr ^ I have 10 other photos with cars all over the place, sometimes photographers are guilty of looking for perfection. Perfection for me would have been all the damn cars out of my shot but in the end I settled for one.
October 6, 200717 yr That highway, State Route 59, may be removed. The mayor says building the highway was a mistake (it turned 20 years old this year -- I was at nearby Kent State U when it opened). Removing the highway with all of its interweaving ramps and bridges, then replacing it with a boulevard will avail a large amount of land for new development. Nice pics by the way. October 6, 200717 yr sometimes photographers are guilty of looking for perfection. This is starting to become an epidemic with this site. It looks like even UncleRando and grasscat are evolving from urban documenters to "photographers" which, in the end, means less pics/landscapes for us to enjoy.
October 6, 200717 yr I had my buddy from Florida with me watching out for cars coming up the onramp since I was in the middle of a street and my car was pulled over illegally. As for photography in general, well it was once a hobby that has evolved into a business for me. Now that Grasscat has his blog going with a base of daily readers, I see him making some money off it eventually too.

October 8, 200717 yr Now that Grasscat has his blog going with a base of daily readers, I see him making some money off it eventually too. God, I hope! Ink...not to take this thread too far off topic, but I have really been concentrating on taking more construction photos for the blog and fewer street scenes. I was just talking to CDM about that the other day--how I need to find some time to fit in an afternoon of nothing but street scenes.
October 8, 200717 yr When I stayed in Akron last month, I left with a feeling that the city was dying; of course, much of that probably comes from the closure of Quaker Square. ^ I wouldn't say the city is dying; in fact, economically it's one of the healthier cities in Ohio. I grew up just south of downtown Akron and it's come a long way in the past couple of decades from what it was when I was a kid. Unfortunately, Akron went overboard in the 60's and 70's with the urban renewal and decided to bulldoze large chunks of downtown and areas surrounding downtown (i.e.; Howard Street, which housed many jazz clubs and was once a very thriving business district). What you have left is section of town that really feels disconnected from the neighboring neighborhoods and virtually no streetlife afterhours (except at the far southern end of downtown). Oh, and by the way... nice pics Monte

The highway is so underutilized and removing the northern portion would help reconnect downtown with some the near westside neighborhoosds. I grew just a few blocks from the Innerbelt; I remember when was completed 20 years ago, I thought it was the coolest thing back then.
October 17, 200717 yr ^ Laugh all you want, but that Bandshell has almost become the "town Square" for various events during the summer. At least 10K alone show up for the Akron Family Festival during the 4th weekend. During the winter, it becomes the Chriskindl German Market and an ice rink.
