@Chazz Michael Michaels Although I prefer threads stay close to topic, you get bonus points for a quote from one of many favorite films from the 80s. “Herb, we got a cleanup in Aisle 5!!!” 😆

I'm happy to hear the latest newsflash particularly related to the slight increase in the buildings height.

However, I find the look of the mock-up to be extremely underwhelming.

Of course the aesthetics can ultimately be quite alluring depending upon the exterior details ... type and coloring of glass as well as any decorative touches or rooftop illumination and ornamentation. I'd love to see something dramatic atop this tower (a giant illuminated paint can that spins and changes colors)

Hoping that what finally comes to fruition will stun every single forum member here due to its transformative and incredibly beautiful appeal.

Fingers crossed and rubbing my lucky rabbits foot!!!!

Much appreciated! I just didn't want to assume that every single person likes them, haha 😆 I too am very interested to see if things play out similarly - and if they do by some miracle, I swear in advance I DONT work for the architects lol

John, perhaps you don't realize that these renderings are done by a friend who does these for the love of Cleveland, not for love of money. It is his hobby. I'm very appreciative of his generosity in adding some visuals in his free time. We should all be so lucky to have someone like @Geowizicalin our lives.

@KJP, of course I realize that these drawings are only for massing purposes. I just hope that the actual tower doesn't come out in a very similar form. In these forums, everyone is entitled to and shares their individual opinions.

I certainly didn't say I am unappreciative of this work performed by @Geowizical. In fact, I enjoy his various renderings in this and other threads.

Wow! Thanks for the news @KJP and the renders @Geowizical.

I'm very (very!)  pleased, and now my interest & curiosity move to enthusiasm & hopefulness about coming news of various treatments; the materiality and texture of the surfaces, especially at pedestrian level; the look of parapets and flashing, etc.  Then there's the overall shape and color, sculptural features, and reflectiveness of the finishes; and details like how Pickard +Chilton will resolve turning corners with sharp edges or soft curves, etc.

P+C has put together some plain-Jane duds over the years, but also some of the most positively stately and impressive textures that are a complete pleasure to behold on a tower (300 N LaSalle anyone?)

The composition of the planes and surfaces of this new skyscraper could really be a standout, in fact a dazzler. My hope is for elegance over shocking boldness.

...Oh my, the whole package can yet go in so many different directions.

I'm back on the edge of my seat for more news.  Today was made better for me thanks to all the reports and insights in this thread. Thanks again. ❤️

Photos, details of Sherwin-Williams' new HQ interiors

At last, we have more illustrations showing the preliminary designs of the new Sherwin-Williams (SHW) headquarters!

OK, they're photos of the proposed interiors rather than renderings of the exterior. But during employee tours of the interior mock-ups, HQ design team members confirmed the physical HQ descriptions NEOtrans has reported are accurate.

And considering that up 3,500 Greater Clevelanders, plus many suppliers and customers will be seeing more of the HQ interiors than the exteriors, the design concepts are very important to attracting and retaining talent to SHW and Greater Cleveland.

I’m growing so impatient. I really hope this would be something we look at and say DANG THIS WAS WORTH THE WAIT.

  • Author

I hate to say, but it won't be worth the wait. After waiting so long and expecting so much, there's no way it can measure up. It's like the movie you've heard so much about for so long, and when you finally see it, it's like "I waited so long for this?" I'm just looking forward to having another 500- to 600-foot-tall tower in the skyline. That's the extent of my expectation. If it meets that, I will be satisfied. I'm not expecting it to relate to the street at all. BTW, nothing has apparently changed from what I've reported most recently...

Oh, I think it’ll be worth the wait!  After years of speculation, to finally see an official rendering of what is coming will be a turning point, moving the discussion from imagination to a tangible image concept.  The next big turning point then will be the movement of dirt.

Tallest office building in the city in 30 years. That's an exciting milestone even if the building is boring.

It's also being built immediately after a massive economic downturn that could easily have derailed plans, but didn't. Frankly it's symbolic of Cleveland's very strong emergence from the pandemic.

Lots to be thankful for even if the aesthetics end up being underwhelming.

Way to keep a good attitude!  I find it hard to remain upbeat though.

It's kind of like finding out the Browns are coming back in 1999 but knowing that they are going to be a disaster for 20 years.  Thankful?  Yes.  Excited?  Hopeful?  Not so much.

But you're right.  At least we have a team/skyscraper.  That's something, right?

And finally filling part of that huge parking crater.

@KJP - Any news on the Rockefeller project next door?  Maybe Cliffs builds over there after the garage is torn down?

600 feet above the street: Sherwin-Williams sets HQ height

An executive-level committee at Sherwin-Williams (SHW) has made a critical decision -- the final height of its new headquarters tower just west of downtown Cleveland's Public Square. According to sources on the HQ design team, the height decided by SHW's Building Our Future Committee is 600 feet.

The tower's height may actually be a few feet over 600, depending on the size of rooftop fixtures and other related structures ordered. The number of floors also approaches 40 stories, but the number isn't easy to specify since there are planned lobby mezzanines and penthouse levels that can be counted or discounted based on preference.

Amazing reporting @KJP. Do any of the "briefing documents" you have seen contain actual renders or massings?

The only thing I don't like at all is this: "Roughly 2.8 acres of SHW-owned land held for "future development" along West 6th Street and St. Clair Avenue will be used for trailers, equipment and materials staging during HQ construction. Afterwards it will return to use as surface parking and held for future expansion unless a developer or developers make worthwhile offers to SHW."

Returning this to surface parking would be such a disappointment.  I hope that is not the long term reality.

I'm hopeful that the location and surrounding momentum (Rockefeller rehab, potential Rockefeller parking lot new construction, potential Magellan new construction, the new HQ itself) will be more than enough reasons for developers to jump at those lots. I won't get my hopes up too quick but fingers crossed...

Having a complete and built up / activated W6th corridor would be amazing someday, hopefully sooner than later.

weve talked about it all before, but not excited about a bridge over w3 or about the center of excellence plan.  sullies the entire project imo

Great to now have the official  confirmation that Cleveland will add a 600 foot tower to the skyline.  That will be a huge change in the look of the skyline. This single addition will really be symbolically and aesthetically powerful for the city.

Now we just have to see the actual execution of detail in the structure - hopefully it will be one of those projects that, in person, is even more impactful than expected based on the early massings.

Also great to know that the city design commission has been working cooperatively with SW already and that we should not expect a drawn out design approval process.

Watching  this baby rise is going to feel real good!

I really like how the angled roof slopes up towards the Big 3. I also like how the tower is west of W 3rd. It will provide more interesting sight lines. Overall the impact on the skyline will benefit tremendously because of both of those decisions.

(The Public Sq facing lot plans are still quite disappointing.)

No. I was not given any documents with renders on them. In fact, when I reported the site plan in January, that was based on word descriptions. But the descriptions were so detailed that I was able to come up with my own interpretation of the site plan which turned out to be nearly identical to the official release a month later.

BTW @Geowizical, design team sources say your renders are pretty close to what is proposed except the roofline is "a little bit different" and another said "a little fancier but close enough."

I'll take it! That's a win in my book 😎

I'm just grateful it has some decent size and it's erasing the shameful fact that some of the frontage on our prime downtown civic space was surface parking lots for years.  That will no longer be the case, and I am happy.

Interestingly, the project page describes that tower as 520,000 square feet of space.  Must be much smaller floorplates than SHW, which I think is supposed to be around 1 million square feet, at the same height.

You are correct. This is actually a really good looking building in my opinion, and still has a looming presence at ‘only’ 600’. Just hope SHW isn’t way boxier than this to make up that square footage

I'm glad CPC is involved and the approval process is being expedited, but also very frustrated that there's zero public involvement.  Small business owners and homeowners can sometimes spend months getting put through the ringer at local design review, Landmarks and CPC for things like signage, roof replacements, and minor rehabs.  Think of what developers in Ohio City, Tremont, or Little Italy have to go through.  Meanwhile perhaps the most important project in a generation won't be made public until it is more or less already approved?  I'm not saying they should spend a year scrutinizing every little detail of the SHW project, but is it too much to ask to see a rendering?

Agreed. Hopefully it will not have a dark, drab exterior. There are enough of those buildings downtown already.

No, no, no, it won't look like anything we have here in Cleveland.  I mean, we're told it will resemble the world class architecture of suburban Toronto.  So...yay!
