November 15, 20213 yr So the ceremonial groundbreaking is set for tomorrow. Will there be a pause in work until the final design approval or will crews arrive Wednesday until this baby is finished?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
November 15, 20213 yr Author Reminder! Let's meet and celebrate two things -- the death of a parking crater and the start of construction of a 600-footer in downtown Cleveland. November 15, 20213 yr The SHW project is on today's Board of Zoning Appeals agenda seeking a couple of necessary variances for construction. Also on the agenda is somebody who wants to construct an 8'x12' shed on a vacant lot. Only in America.

Seriously though, it will be so awesome to see that lot turn into a giant new tower downtown! I hope there will be a few more cranes in the near future (City Club, Magellan, and who knows what else)
November 15, 20213 yr speaking of sheds, let's shed a few crocodile tears of joy -- today is the official last day of the parking lot ocean. 😂
November 15, 20213 yr Author I'm surprised the groundbreaking tent isn't up yet. The application was to allow the the tents to be put up as early as Nov. 12 (see below). But apparently no permit has been issued yet for the tent! A permit was issued for the generators, but no tents! Project Description: - Tents for Ground Breaking / Media Event INSTALL 20M X 35M, 10' X 20' TENTS FROM 11-12-21 TO 11-17-21 FOR GROUND BREAKING / MEDIA EVENT PER APPROVED PLANS. November 15, 20213 yr "The beginning of the end for the Parking Lot District!!" Oh no, now we are starting to make it sound historic. Actually, 30 years is quite a long time.

November 16, 20213 yr Author According to documents filed with the city of Cleveland, the groundbreaking ceremony is set for 3 PM. But if the permits weren't approved, then who knows? November 16, 20213 yr Author No. What approval meeting? It's a staff action by building & housing. And there was no tent this morning. Let's also cancel the UO lunch meeting. November 16, 20213 yr Maybe SH-W decided it wasn't a "gook look" to have a ground breaking before final approval no matter that final approval is a foregone conclusion.
November 16, 20213 yr Maybe Atlanta sweetened the deal. 😀 Edit: It's a joke. Lighten up, people. Edited November 16, 20213 yr by LibertyBlvd
November 16, 20213 yr This is a bit embarrassing for City of Cleveland if they are responsible for delay.

Not sure what it's going to say yet, but the city not approving the permit in a timely manner has to be a factor if not THE factor. But I don't expect anyone involved to publicly blame the city. November 16, 20213 yr From my experiences, I wouldn't be shocked if this were on the city. I am currently (and recently) retired from the Cleveland Fire Department. The bureaucracy of any HQ, and city hall especially, moves at a snails pace. It seems any office at city hall is staffed to the hilt, but when you walk in to get anything done, you get ignored to an almost unbearable level. I am hoping that Mayor elect Bibb will streamline services, cut red tape, and will hopefully set new standards in how departments operate. I was up in the air about who I wanted as Mayor...experience with the inner workings of business relationships with the city OR fresh new ideas. I am hopeful that businesses and corporations will have an easier time with the new administration.
November 16, 20213 yr One has to wonder how much money the city could save by reducing the excessive bureaucracy.

November 16, 20213 yr Author Sherwin-Williams HQ groundbreaking delayed By Ken Prendergast / November 16, 2021 Today was to be the day that VIPs and media would record for posterity the official start of construction on Sherwin-Williams’ (SHW) new $300-plus million global headquarters. However, that celebration is going to have to wait for another day. “Due to scheduling conflicts, the HQ groundbreaking event will not take place today,” said Julie Young, SHW’s vice president of global corporate communications, in an e-mail to NEOtrans. “A new event date has not been finalized.” MORE: https://neo-trans.blog/2021/11/16/sherwin-williams-hq-groundbreaking-delayed/ "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 16, 20213 yr Author Updated the article with an additional quote from SHW's VP of comms. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 16, 20213 yr Well, hopefully the new groundbreaking date doesn't conflict with the groundbreaking for City Club Apartments.
November 16, 20213 yr Author Ironically, protestors showed up today to protest a groundbreaking that didn't break ground. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

And....drumroll...article says groundbreaking is set for January.
November 16, 20213 yr The lighting is a nice touch that's going to improve the final look a lot. Also will tie in nicely with the city since we have pretty interesting lighting on some of the most prominent buildings. "Cleveland, city of light, city of magic . . ." 😉

I cannot remember if it was a PC or Landmark representative but somebody basically told the architect they would never be able to rent out the retail (for some sort of sensible build out reason I cannot recall) if they did not have at least nine feet ceiling heights.

Unclear. The reason it's getting taller is that the floor plates will be reduced and it's getting taller to compensate. The area between St. Clair and the garage is getting 50' wider and as a result looks much more like something you could build on. So that's a BIG improvement.
