Cannot wait to see the crane in the sky. I was hoping it would be up by the start of the NBA All Star Game

Is there any signage up at least? Between SHW and the City Club apartments, it'd be nice to showcase what's being built while people are in town for the All Star Game.

No! Glaringly absent.

Courtesy of my friend Todd. He's got a helluva view. As we can see, they are digging some dirt out on the left and middle bottom. What's it mean?? Is it for utilities? Or basements of future buildings?

Seeing all of those parking lots plus 55, and 75 under construction in one image, is just crazy to me.

This will definitely change the transformation of this area in a major way.

A couple from lunch today

Are they just digging out old foundations at this point? Looks like they're pretty deep for a building that isn't going to have a basement?

They’re drilling caissons. It’s also not uncommon to strip a certain depth of soil for various reasons, including to increase soil bearing capacity or replace unsuitable soils.

Now to remove that concrete wart in the rear of this scene.

Looks like it can be viewed via YouTube within the wkyc link.  Or maybe not.  I dunno.

I really enjoy all the speakers. I’m so excited for this new headquarters. Bring out the crane and get to building this beautiful tower.

The news conference can be viewed in its entirety on YouTube.

I saw this and though the same thing, but I think it would fill the gap fine without blocking out terminal tower. I think it'll be right at the left edge of it

Quick screen grab from google earth, unfortunately when I zoom out to get the perspective right the models become a bit choppy. I also included the perspective one gets from the Edgewater script sign.  (oops I had my old nuCLEus model on)

Awesome! Are you on Twitter to reply to Dan Miller? If not, do you mind if I post it? And how would you like to be credited?

Interesting how it almost completely blocks 200 PS in one of the most famous views of downtown.

Yea I was surprised about 200 public square as well... What about the script sign in Tremont?

Feel free to share it around, I’m not the most adept at twitter! You can credit me by my UO username if you like.

I think the new tower best impacts the views from Wendy Park, Settlers Landing, and the Tremont script sign. Edgewater’s view mainly benefits from the at-times dark monolith of 200 PS being blocked by a reflective glass facade. Should make for some fantastic sunset shots!

No downtown tower cranes, anyway.

It’s ok at least we have noticeable construction going on around the area

Some world class signage would be nice.

Yes it would be :-) there’s still time before our visitors arrive

No cranes in the sky for All Star Game? Don't these giant red ones pointing 10 stories up count!?

Question regarding the second picture.  Why would SW be digging down so far on what is planned to be a surface lot?  They did a nearly identical dig with a similar steel retaining wall (now covered) on what I thought will be the southwest corner of the tower itself ... about where the cranes are parked in the picture.

is that where the second tower would go? maybe doing the underground work for the eventual second tower so it's quicker when the time comes? just speculating so don't take my word for it lol.

Speculation, but I believe this might have been suggested by a poster in the past.  The entire site is loaded with the remnants of prior buildings (200 years worth), foundations and the like, and they need to excavated for the new construction.  Since the plan is to eventually build Phase 2 on the currently planned surface lots (hopefully I will live to see that), they might have decided to just clean the site now since they are mobilized as any such work in the future is just going to be more costly.  Of course it just might be utilities.

Yes, they definitely do count! Signage on the fence would really help get the point across for those unfamiliar with what's going on.

i know it's the middle of winter but those roads ...

^ Frankfort Ave always looks like that, winter or not. I assume they'll rip it up and repave it since that will be the driveway between the tower and garage.

Sounds (looks) like pouring caissons to bedrock to support the footers and the rest of the tower.

Lol, I specifically avoided saying what type of signage.

Does it have to be above freezing for concrete to cure properly? Or does that not really matter?

This is amazing for the city and the amount of people coming into town for all star weekend. Cleveland is that city. Come on Sherwin bring on that big banner for all to see

It really should be for a day, or 2, but I'm sure if these are the caissons, they'll cover with blankets and may employ a ground thaw machine. They also probably have admixtures in the mix to help with the cold. Plus, the bulk of the caissons will be underground and thus insulated from surface and the frost in the ground and cold (Subfreezing) air we are expected to get this weekend.

The frost line here is 42 inches down from the surface. But that’s the extreme. If anything, they could add calcium chloride (salt) to the top 3 1/2 feet of the pour.
