the best we can do at this point is ridicule the shack whenever we have the opportunity and try to make the SHW execs feel slightly embarrassed by their selfish decision for the next 30 years.

“Shack shaming”

Holy mackerel Dave2017 I love that idea. Color, plantings, glass atrium! It is a paint company after all and that should mean color. This keeps getting better and better.

Seriously though. I may lack the ability to design an amazing space but I DO have the ability to recognize one when I see it. Too bad none of this will happen.

Yes, a psychedelic shack!

I know we’re getting close to SW beginning its exciting vertical ascent and that it’s set to open in 2024.  I was curious  if @KJPor any of you well-informed forumers knows the timeline as to when the tower will likely  top out?

For comparison, The Lumen's tower crane was installed Oct. 1, 2018 and the last floor was poured Nov. 23, 2019. That's 396 feet in 419 days with a brief delay to due a crane mishap.

SHW's HQ will be 616 feet. I don't know if it will rise in 616 days +/-. Probably faster since the SHW HQ's floor heights are taller than The Lumen's.

Plus, steel frame should rise faster than a concrete pour like Lumen.

I happened to drive by Valor Acres today on Miller Rd., and there was WCS identifying Sherwin Williams, whereas I do not see that at the downtown HQ site.

I know we're not building a re-furbished parking lot on the site. But I'm used to seeing a construction site of this magnitude look more like a construction site of magnitude and not like a construction site for a parking lot. After all the work done if you didn't know better and just looked at that recent photo you could make the case it looks more like a new parking lot is being created rather than a huge office building. Maybe it's just parking lot PTSD. and my brain still sees parking lots everywhere and not a brand new 616' office tower.

Man those parking lots are hard to kill lol.

First non caisson concrete pour. Also there are Concrete forms and form carpenters on site.

Which construction experts here can explain what’s going on in that last pic?  I’d heard there was to be no basement level, so figured the caissons would come all the way to ground level.  In that picture those round things look like the top of some of the caissons.  But I see others to the side and behind that excavation coming all the way up to the ground.  Will they just pour more concrete on top of those round things currently below ground level to carry the load of the tower?

i'm not an expert, but i think when you get near the lake you often get sandy soils that would shift under a large structure, so they may be pouring a mat foundation/spread footer type reinforcement underground for the building. if you look back at some of the renderings posted on this forum you may notice that the lower few floors extend father west than the high rise. if I had to guess, it's possible that the low rise portion may not require the extensive underground foundation.

The mat is also where the elevator/stair core will start to rise in about a month.

Is the footprint of the building the sunken rectangle portion or will it be larger than that?

looking at their plans it seems like it will certainly be wider than that pad. You can see along the top of the ditch there's more support collumns in the pic. I dug around the old presentations and see the layout of the tower. Seems like it will be as wide as the block from sidewalk to sidewalk. As far as width the other direction it's hard to tell since the plans I came across below don't have measurements.

Aesthetic preferences aside, it can not be overstated how large an impact the shack and tower will have on this part of downtown.  That empty space on the square and across from the Renaissance Hotel were catastrophic to the sense of place and space.

Yes

Almost just as large as Huntington. Didn’t they initially say 900000sqft?  Did they slap on a few more floors?!

Huntington as in 200 Public Square? If so, yes that's 1.2 million square feet.

SHW has said their HQ will be 1 million sf. This says it will be larger and doesn't include the pavilion which will be about 50,000 sf IIRC.

Can they make it taller without running afoul of the regulatory agencies?   666' (I know lol) or higher and the 3 tallest in Ohio (and 4 of the 5) are right there.

Yes in theory, but not without a re-review by the different Commissions and departments at the city. It is likely zoning allows a taller building to be there, but they can't just add height without the proper approvals.

I'm sure they didn't add floors, if anything the floor plates for the podium and the tower itself have been settled and so they can give the exact figure instead of the estimate put out in press releases.

I suppose technically it could be called 39 stories with the rooftop mechanicals. BTW the load maps skip levels when there's nothing different to show from the last load map. So there's gaps from levels 5-14, 18-25 and 29-36...

The additional sq. ft. are curious to me. That's almost 150,000 additional feet right? I think I see how that is going to look. Previously I've noticed that some pictures of the tower make it look almost like a larger but still slender version of the Hilton. But some images make it look almost as bulky as 200 Public Square. In my mind I kept trying figure out if it is the former or the later. The additional sq. ft. settles it for me. It's going to be bulky and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

As someone who constantly walks by that empty parking lot, I totally agree with you. Even when the previous parking structure was all that was there, it was much better than the entire lot being empty.

In an ideal world, we would’ve gotten some retail on the ground floor of the Superior side of the building, but a non-empty lot will feel amazing regardless.

I think a lot of people underestimated just how “thicc” this building will be.

I spy what looks to be the start of the tower crane!! 👀🏗

If they're getting ready to pour that pad, they need the base of the crane well ahead of the rest of it so it can be secured when that Pad that was formed last week is poured.

Does this one have a name?

Niles seems to be the leading candidate.

Hart Crane - A son of Cleveland, and a powerhouse of American poetry.

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/hart-crane

"Hart Crane is considered a pivotal—even prophetic—figure in American literature, who is often cast as a Romantic in the decades of high Modernism. Crane’s version of American Romanticism extended back through Walt Whitman to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and in his most ambitious work, The Bridge, he sought nothing less than an expression of the American experience in its entirety."

Two cranes, coming right up
By Ken Prendergast / July 11, 2022

While work has started on installing the tower crane at Sherwin-Williams’ (SHW) headquarters construction site, the timetable has been set for the next crane to rise in downtown Cleveland. That second crane will appear at the work site for the City Club Apartments near the end of August, according a spokesman for Cleveland Construction Inc. Tower cranes are considered by some to be a visual indicator of a city’s economic growth.
