I was downtown yesterday evening for the Soldiers & Sailors tunnel tours followed by dinner and drinks. The streets were packed despite the lack of any games or events at Gateway. Some kind of dance competition was at the Convention center, sold out show at HOB, and a general suprising level of activity not touched by the Cavs, Guardians or Browns.
April 30, 20232 yr Like many cities, downtown work crowds are nowhere near pre pandemic levels. Weekend evenings will be ebb and flow; some busier, some slower. I was just in Chicago last mid-week, it’s no where near its prior busyness; lots of empty storefronts, including on the Mag Mile. Busier than even last late-August when I was the only person walking in City Hall corridors. No one other than a couple workers in the 2 departments i went to for business. SW headquarters will put a lot of people on the streets around PS. FWIW, Cleveland is not alone in the empty downtown vibe. Edited April 30, 20232 yr by Oxford19

May 1, 20232 yr Yes, as l've previously posted, that's my favorite view of the skyline even before SHW is added. Too bad we don't see it much on national media shots. I guess that's because it's practically impossible to see it unless you're in a moving vehicle. Would love to have a pedestrian overlook but unfortunately there's really no way to access it.

May 3, 20232 yr I recently noticed a post on the Instagram account of Pickard Chilton, the firm that designed the SHW complex. It was touting its new design for a 26 story addition to the headquarters of the Co Star Group in Richmond, Virginia. The 26 story office tower and 6 story, multi functional building will integrate ample office space, fitness and wellness amenities, an auditorium, conference space and retail and dining options and a 2.56 acre landscaped green space and 50,000 square feet of green roof terraces. The renderings showed people crawling all over the complex enjoying the public spaces it offered in the heart of downtown. The post states it was "designed to INVITE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AT THE GROUND LEVEL, CoStar's new complex not only offers a comfortable eco-friendly, workspace for their employees, but ALSO PROVIDES THE OPPOFRTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER IN A GREEN SPACE..." (emphasis own). The Cleveland Planning commission (which bent over and approved the SHW complex with hardly much pushback) was begging for a similar design for the SHW complex in the heart of our city but was completely ignored by the company which much preferred the bunker we will end up with. Interesting how PC is able to address the different needs and wishes of it clients in its designs, which I guess is their job. Also interesting to observe two completely different corporate work place philosophies. Unfortunately we are stuck with the less engaging complex per SHW's demands for a fortress. At least it will look nice on the skyline.

May 3, 20232 yr Also on the Pickard Chilton website, from what I see they have a page about Eaton Center which was completed in Beachwood, and they have pages about some non-completed buildings, but I don't see a page about SW tower for some reason.

May 3, 20232 yr The only thing I know about SW's corporate approach is they fired that kid at one of their paint stores for making popular TikTok videos where he made new colors by mixing paint. A lot of brands beg people to do that sort of thing. In all seriousness, it indicated to me how conservative they are.

Listening to interviews with the primary Pickard Chilton people, it's clear they believe public amenities in architecture creates better places. The client disagrees, i guess.

I don't know if you have, but you should take a walk by the site. The sheer size of the building from the ground floor is impressive. The one thing i discounted from the original plan is that this will have a huge presence in Public Square, even being on west 3rd.
May 3, 20232 yr Not quite sure why SW would need to have a green space in or around their building when Public Square is right across the street! And I would almost bet that PS is a lot larger than 2 1/2 acres. There are beautiful buildings all over the world, New York has lots of them, but I don’t think you can build them all in that one space where SW is building! I’m very happy with what we got “stuck with”…lol, as some of you seem to feel about it! Also you have to realize, hopefully SW is not the last building to be built in Cleveland! So there is always the chance something will come along that will satisfy all your tastes in architecture!

And yet SW did choose to put some green space right in front of their low rise building. The critique here is that it's a literal front lawn with zero engagement. And no programmed green roof on the low rise part with the beautiful view of Public Square.
