May 6, 20232 yr That warping is pretty typical of low quality glass that you see in most projects in the US. It's unfortunate, but anyone holding out hope that the final product will be anything but a warped mess should temper expectations. It's an unfortunate reality of glass curtain walls here.

The city planning commission called this out during the review meetings. I remember the material pallet in SW's submission even listed two different glass panels, with the thicker glass meant for the podium floors. But that was also a while ago and material costs have only gone up. It could have been value engineered since then. May 7, 20232 yr Please forgive my ignorance/insolence, but is it being asserted here that the entire building will be covered with "protected" panels, then someone is going to go around the entire 42-ish stories and peel plastic off of a skyscraper? I've watched about thirty 40-plus-story buildings go up here in San Francisco, and I've never once seen glass this wavy or crews plastic-peeling an entire building. May 8, 20232 yr below is the salesforce tower in sf when it was u/c. looks like they took off the glass protective wrap as they installed it. thats common, but not always the case. sometimes the protective plastic or whatever is a much more thin film and you aren’t sure its even on there until its peeled off. here is an example: as another example here’s another pic of the heatherwick lantern house apts by the highline when it was u/c — you can see some panels have protective film and some have been taken off. and then … Photos from street level show the state of construction. May 8, 20232 yr of course if anyone wants to know for sure and right away, just hang around the site and look for the facade panels on the ground or when they off load them from the truck. if somebody can get pix we can see them up close on the ground and then compare to the installed versions. isn’t tower construction fun?! 👍

This is the closest to a webcam outside of this thread that we are going to get. 🙂

May 10, 20232 yr I took some photos today of the new window panels from about 30 feet back, and I do not see any type of protective film on the installed windows. I also saw some uninstalled window panels in crates and they don't appear to have any protective film on them. Depending on how the light is reflecting on the panels, the photos show a clear reflection of Terminal Tower, but some of the photos have a wavy effect making the Ritz building look like a Frank Gehry building. In some of the photos, there is no reflection, and you can see directly through. I think the varying visual effect will make the building more interesting from various angles rather than a giant reflective mirror. I can post the photos if someone gives me instruction on how to attach them to a post.

Glass looks much better now than it did from the first few images that came out.

I urge all of our enthusiastic forumers to be patient and try not to judge the glass or the building based on the installation of just a few glass panels. Wait until they have installed 9 or 10 stories so that you get the full effect of the glass covering a broader space. It’s then that you will see all of the surrounding building reflected in the glass curtain wall and begin to get a true sense of how it fits contextually. I think it will be a handsome building that will enhance Public Square from every vantage point. The one thing I do regret is that the building will have little or no public access.
