Looks like the elevator core is on floor 33 or so. They should top out the core by the end of September.

Thank you to all for posting the construction photographs. One detail that I wish had been happening is the glass on the inset panels were a shade darker than the outer skin.  I don't see these panels providing the "slimming" effect they were wanting to achieve.

When completed, I believe the shadow-play in the insets should create exactly the effect you seek.

All the sudden, West 3rd only has 3 surface lots left.

So, its been a little quiet of a week here at UO - thought it might be ok to "nerd out" a little on thoughts about the SW Tower as we see it becoming realized..

It all started when I was taking a long look at @BoomerangCleRes's moody picture of the new skyline.  I started thinking that the SW Tower looked a little shorter in comparison to the TT and 200 then I'd imagined (assuming the top of the crane is consistent with the tower's eventual height). - but I realize that feeling is emphasized by the perspective or angle of the photo - with the TT more in the foreground...I think, anyway.

Then, I started revisiting some of the much earlier posts in the thread, going back to when the final design was revealed - there were a lot of great renderings/mock-ups to really study the comparative height.

Long story, short - I came across @dave2017's rendering focusing on the type of glass that the HQ would have- and I just thought his version of the exterior facade was WAY cool and worth a 2nd look for everyone. And compared to the glass that we're getting, I think that effect really accentuates the building design wonderfully.   Not that I'm complaining about the actual glass, which I still think will look really nice.

But, his version in the attached rendering was next-level cool.    I'm curious if folks are generally delighted with how the glass is coming out.....

Dave2017 Render.png

Since you're asking...  No, I personally wouldn't use a word like "delighted" to describe my thoughts on the glass, or the building itself.  It's just glass.  Like any mid-70's-era office building.  It's a typical, Pickard-Chilton lazy design, like ALL their designs; a clunky box with an odd cut here or there, wrapped in mirrored glass so as to give the appearance of it being hip looking.  But that look hasn't been hip since Owens-Illinois built their squatty, look-alike Toledo HQ.  There are so many inspiring designs and engineering marvels going on in the architectural world now, which makes this one all the more disappointing.  Lots of missed chances here, i.e. as I've mentioned before, the shallow, right-angled cut-ins will do nothing to "slim" the building, they'll just reflect the exact same-angled light as the rest of the surrounding glass face.  The one thing they did get right though, was to set it back off the square a block, so there's that.  And it's nice that there's a rare new building in Cleveland, and one hopes it will bring some people and a little life to the Square.

I kind of like the simple design with the interesting sloped top to it. Plus with the lights I don't think it will be boring. But it also won't be ornate or over the top which in my opinion is equally bad to being bland. I think it's a good sweet spot where it's simple and benefits bigly by being so different looking to the other tall bois downtown. It really gives a nice compliment in the skyline. Can't wait to see it done!

I wish that parking garage wasn't there, but oh well.

i believe it also will have a projection on it right? so at least there will be some fun stuff covering the blank wall at night. Could add to the atmosphere. But also there is ground floor retail in it too at least. I think it's just empty right now which I found surprising. I think there's really only a small bank in it. Not sure haven't been over there in a bit since I moved.

Yes, go over to the Playhouse Square thread.  There are some photos showing projection on the garage wall.

Two pics from today ... one from the top of the 1111 Superior parking deck and another from our 26th floor offices in the building.

It could have been a big 5 if the original nuCLEus was built.  Oh well. Maybe a tall tower will eventually be built there.

Sure is - and did you notice how even the Justice Center doesn’t look all that bad anymore?  Like the biggest cities / the less attractive buildings kind of fill in the cityscape but the eyes sort of go to the most prominent- I think we have some of that positive collateral effect with SW.  And the taller she gets, the sexier (for me anyway).

No zoomies flying, but another project with Irishtown Bend in the background.  Maybe that can have a crane 😂

Just an (hopefully) interesting SW factoid.  I was curious how SW ranked amongst tallest construction projects in the U.S. currently - and, the answer -its the 26th tallest (not sure as to square footage rank) building under construction right now in the USA.  (There are dozens of much taller projects worldwide, especially in China - didn't bother counting all those.)

Here at home -  there are 6 taller in NYC, including 5 at the 1000 foot or higher range, 5 in Miami, 4 in boomtown Austin (what a skyline they'll have),  2 in LA, 2 in Boston, 1 in Houston, 1 in Philly at 670 feet (that one has to be the ugliest building ever) the Hudson Tower in Detroit at 685' and one each in Vegas and Chicago.  The only smaller market with one slightly taller is the Mutual of Omaha HQ in Omaha (a Pickard Chilton building.  (Info from the Skyscraperpage.com).   It's pretty clear that the design was intended from the get-go not to exceed, or I guess, in some way, overshadow the Terminal Tower - but, SW if it had wanted to, probably could've become the 2nd tallest in the city.   Still obviously super cool to have this legit. skyscraper going up in our town!
