If you look closely they’re just sheets of cardstock or whtvr, probably to protect the glass while they roughout the interiors. Does look somewhat striking though!

From last night

Sometimes I take Euclid Ave to head to work and its starting to feel like a canyon when coming in through Playhouse Square.

Canyon  - Hmmm - all these tall structures around it.

Is their garage designed such that it could be built upon?

I seem to recall it is not. I remember that being a bone of contention in the city's design-review meetings.

I don't believe so as it seems like the open lot to the west of the tower was intentioned for any future phase. I always wished they had built the garage in that location instead with the capability of building their phase 2 on top.

Seeing these shots reminds me that the designers did one fantastic favor to the 55 building, both to those looking out of it, and those of us who love looking AT it.  Such a beautiful building and example of its time, I'm glad it didn't get walled off.  And I, for one, have always been absolutely in awe of the Standard Building's gorgeous blank wall - a monumental display of restraint showing deferential respect to the church as it frames it's ornate steeple.  Such an example of class - I sure hope no one paints a goofy, immediately fading and peeling mural on that thing.

I swore I typed "its" correctly!  :(

^ l don't want to pick a fight and l'm not sure if you're being tongue in cheek or  serious but respectfully, that blank wall is an affront to urbanism.

Nope, no fight necessary and I certainly understand why it would bother some people, but I'm not being tongue-in-cheek.  I love it.  Frames those two older buildings beautifully, and it was a necessary architectural feature in that era in order to build that high.  Doesn't bother me at all.  Very unashamed, just like Cleveland.

Last night.

It does not have a blank wall out of “deferential respect”. It has a blank wall because they were expecting another building to be built between them and the church, where the church annex now sits. The annex could and should be replaced with something taller.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Of course.  I didn't say that's WHY it was built that way, I said that was the effect.  And buildings of that era had a "back" and three viewable sides.  If you'd like to see why I like this particular back, take a look at the back of the Rockefeller building and see what could have been staring at Public Square.  I guess some people see a blank concrete wall and find the beauty in it, and other grab their spray paint and deface it.

Happy Friday!

Can we have a caption contest for this photo?  I want to say something like the ghost of Terminal Tower, but there must be something way more clever than that.  Nice shot @Silent Matt !

Never been a fan of this way of thinking about cities- its a sad place where all the buildings have to step out of the way, stand back, crouch, and hide in deference to some other favored building.  It's the logic that gives us setbacks and height limits and viewsheds, all of which are anathema to a dense and vibrant big city downtown, and try to turn them into something less.  Something suburban.

Indeed. There are some beautiful hues of color in these photos, and on the BIG screen, there is no loss of resolution. Keep them coming 👍@Agreene2

I'lI tell you what, the way other buildings are reflected in SHW is a real thing of beauty and not something l for one expected.

Parking lot - gone. Hole in the skyline -filled in. Framing PS - done. Colorful reflections - unexpected bonus.

Excellent addition!

Beautiful day out today. One of the best views of downtown

So, the highest inhabitable floor (36th) is roughly the height of the Erieview tower.  It would be like sitting on top of the Erieview and this will have some gorgeous views.  I assume that this will be the executive floor with offices for the CEO, vice presidents, etc.

They do not offer a pension anymore. It’s been at least 10 years since they stopped. 401k is slightly above average.

This is 100% inaccurate. They paused the pension program during the housing crisis back in '07-'09 but it was brought back shortly after that and is still a thing. I also believe, but I could be wrong on this, if you were hired during that time during the pension pause, when they brought it back you were backpaid in your pension account based on years of service. Like most pension plans though, you don't qualify until you have 6 months of service and it isn't 100% vested until 3 years of service.

If you’re referring to the 2% additional (and on top of the original 6%) match that is called a “pension” but just goes into your 401k amount and is paid out annually that is it.

maybe we have different definitions of “pension” but to my knowledge they no longer offer a set % of money after you retire until you did. They just give you an extra % and call it “pension” funds.

They have a pension benefit, see my previous response. Their 401K is also 100% match on the first 6% but 0% after that. For example, you put 10% into 401K SW, will match the first 6%, dollar for dollar, and no match on the remaining 4% you elected to deposit.

I think a few more glass towers and that'll be a real nice aesthetic mix of sleek new buildings and old browns/tan buildings. Really cool to see how tower designs have changed over the years. Makes the city look so unique!

From an aesthetic standpoint, we needed that SW Tower in the worst way - it really fills a huge gap that was there and creates a more fully realized, modern skyline.

It’s been so much fun watching the construction   - I’m gonna miss the  unique excitement of a new tower rising  (  great daily updates from forum members like @Agreene2and @MayDayand many others)   once this baby is completed.

And it won’t be all that long till we get to see the nighttime images of SW all lit up!

Now, probably like you guys, I’m hoping we do get another whale - maybe Cleveland Cliffs?  Or a new Justice  Center tower?  Or a Bedrock tower at Nucleus?
