^ anyone else think that street needs to be even wider haha

Just my opinion but that side of the paint museum looks like sh!t. It is actually somehow worse than the renderings. I'm hoping the front looks better.

Edited by Silent Matt

Perhaps some trees on that side will conceal a portion of it.

With the main tower entrance fronting Superior, would be great if the city did something nice with that stretch. They can start by removing those hideous round planter/barricades in the middle of the street.

What's funny is this picture shows two different views. One view shows how perfectly SHW fits in the other one is how much of a drop off our downtown has in the gateway district height wise. Here's hoping 2024 marks the beginning of a more balanced downtown. (While keeping the historic buildings, we know we love tearing down history).

Also when you think about it, the paint museum, while disappointing does something similar to what 200 PS does with the podium and setback. Biggest difference is 200 PS includes retail space.

I don't think it's an IKEA, I'm pretty sure they're putting a drive thru window on the other side of the building.

I sure wish those RTA bus shelters could get a redesign before The Shack opens. They are showing their age

Hopefully we will see some towers of significant height on the parking lots in that district in the not too distant future.

FWIW the landscaping plan is/was pretty extensive. Unlike the city, I trust SHW to take care of their trees. How's that for a Monday morning burn?!?! lol

Hope they're getting the construction site secured for the windstorm starting tomorrow. Gusts up to 80 mph are forecast.

Another screenshot from a new Instagram video by Jonesdronescle shows the growing  Cleveland skyline with SW rising.behind Stokes.

Any construction crew with any sense of risk management awareness pays close attention to the weather, and I’m pretty sure that’s the case here. Every forecast I’m seeing is saying 50mph - still plenty to be concerned with, but in perspective when the outer bands of Hurricane Sandy hit us, the highest recorded was around 70mph. I remember all too well because I was on the Main Avenue bridge trying to keep a Mini Cooper from getting flung into the Cuyahoga 😬

Courtesy of @KevinMoss216 for his upcoming Burger King property listing at Detroit and Lake avenues. SHW HQ fills in a nice void from this angle. The downtown skyline looks dense and symmetrical from here.

That's one of my all-time favorite shots of the city.  Would love to see that as a night time shot after SW is complete.

SHW HQ is pretty bright at night now with all of its construction lighting. Maybe more so now than when it will be done. Looks great from my balcony (too bad I can't get an in-focus zoom cell phone photo from here).

@Silent Matt,  I never understood why the architects didn't include posts on the adjacent sides of these cutouts.  Maybe @ArtMasterCLEor other design devotees here can weigh in with their opinions. Thx!

Ok, never mind, I just looked at rendering. I think i answered my own question. The external columns are not part of the steel structure on the two short sides of the building.

@DO_Summers,although I am not a structural engineer, or architect, I believe you are correct about the lack of structural support responsibilities on the north and south elevations. Additionally, this allows the cutouts on the northwest and southeast corners to remain uninterrupted. The result from a design and contextual perspective is two-fold: One, it allows visual connectivity with the other structures around the square and the warehouse district as they are at the same relative height. For example, looking west down Euclid, the columns on the East elevation identifies the approximate height of the of the buildings around the Square as well as those along Euclid Avenue. Two, looking closely at @Silent Matt’s photo you will notice that, from a pedestrian perspective looking northeast, the uninterrupted cutout on the southeast corner allows perfect visual connectivity to the setbacks of Key Tower. I’m guessing that when the SW Tower is viewed at pedestrian level from the northwest, the same visual interaction will occur when looking beyond the cutout on the northwest corner to the setbacks of Terminal Tower.

The cutouts also breaks up the mass of this hulking building, making it less intimidating and far more interesting.

Well conceived contextual design.

I like the overall shape of the building and I like the recesses in the facade.  I would have used a slightly different type of glass or pattern in the recesses so that it accentuated it more.  With all the glass being the same, you lose a lot of the effect of having the recesses.  Not a criticism, just a minor observation.  Overall it's really cool.

I guess I am being a spoiled brat...but I am now more looking forward to seeing what will be built to the top right side of this rendering...

^2nd or 3rd-tallest in the country from the looks of it haha

And why does that look so good as a supertall?!

Is HQ1 as tall as they could have gone without requiring a more costly foundation?

I don't think so. I think about the Lumen's height is as tall as you can go without caissons.

Oh, so the did use caissons? I didn't know that.  Being as frugal as SHW is, I thought they went with the least expensive option.

SW Headquarters adds much needed balance and density to the skyline from this angle.

If I remember correctly there were 26 caissons going 200 feet deep. This sumbitch coulda went a thousand feet tall.

Shoulda.

I assume it's too late to add 20 more floors.  Or is it?

Maybe much smaller floor plates. They’ve tapered the elevator shafts down to only 2 I believe.

Interesting that there's a freighter docked by the stadium. I thought the shipping season ended in December. With climate change maybe we're in for a 10-11 month season.

Now all we need are expanded locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway to allow for larger salties to visit.

My buddy from high school, and a fellow Army infantryman I might add, is in the Local 17 Iron Workers union… and I have bugged him for months to send me his videos from up on the new tower. He finally did, so I crudely stitched them together for your viewing pleasure. Edit: the quality is much better on YouTube.

That was awesome! Thank you @FerrariEnzo! Just being up that high and that close to the edge with such strong winds just isn't for me. 😵 I'm glad someone else is taking these videos!!

^^ Fantastic - thanks for sharing! Although I have to say my palms are sweating and my heart is racing just watching that video.

My hovercraft is full of eels

What this video hammers home is that we need a 5-700 footer, just east of Masthead, maybe, to cap that view down Superior.
