Give me density any day over surface parking, which a second tower would take up even more of.

Our wide streets don't help much, but I love the cavernous feelings of dense downtowns. I know I bring up Pittsburgh a lot in here, but it's really cool to feel like you're in an urban canyon when you're cutting through the streets in their golden triangle. More density and infill gets us that much closer, the midway schrunching down Superior should also help w/that feeling, too.

Stay tuned

Is it also possible they went with the current height to meet a deadline of moving most of their workforce?

(taller HQ1, longer timeline)

feel like either way not to go back to it but the real mistake was not building the parking garage with ability to build on top of it

I assume it's too late to add a few more floors to HQ1.

It is and isn’t. They COULD add a few more floors possibly, as structures are generally over engineered, and I’d assume with a tower such as this they went even further overboard. However, the change order costs and obtaining more steel and materials essentially tomorrow would make it cost prohibitive versus just adding those floors onto a completely new structure.

Since we don't as yet know what the second building will look like l vote for one that compliments rather than mimics the first tower. I don't want a shorter version of phase one. I think identical buildings would be too overwhelming for the surroundings. Too ponderous.

I'm not sure there is enough room but l second the idea of placing it perpendicular rather than parallel to the first building.

Why not turn it 45° instead of 90°? That would be a simple way to differentiate but also reflect the first building.

If they could add exactly 50 feet to the tower it would give Cleveland the 3 tallest in the state and 4 of the top 5. How cool would that be?

While they're at it, maybe Sherwin could add 8 feet to the BP Tower and Cleveland would have the top 4. 😁

^eh maybe 49 or 51 feet to avoid being too ominous.

I’m still of the belief that if over the next 5-10 years SHW continues it’s exponential growth “the shack” is an easily replaceable structure.

Mr. Morikis, tear down that wal...er, shack!

Seriously tho. Tear it down. It's a hideous POS.

Or a building with a somewhat triangular footprint - parallel to W 6th on one side and 45° on the other side. I thought someone did a rendering similar to that upthread.

Sherwin Williams: ‘didn’t build tall enough'
By Ken Prendergast / January 19, 2024

From Sherwin-Williams’ C-Suite executives to construction workers taking their lunch break, more rumblings continue to emerge about what may follow the completion of the global coatings giant’s new headquarters west of Downtown Cleveland’s Public Square. And as time goes on, the rumors about a follow-on headquarters project are getting more detailed.

I know. As I was making a Ronnie Reagan/Gorbachev joke, Ms. Petz just didn't have the same ring to it.

They should build HQ2 even taller than HQ1, make that the big tower.

I think it should be oriented to best take advantage of the solar path and other environmental considerations to maximize heating and cooling efficiency.

I hope with their need to expand, they might consider something more substantial on the PS lot.  I think a welcome center with a 8-10 story hotel would be great on Public Square.  Didn't they say having a hotel would be desirable? and at 8-10 stories, it would match the heights of the other buildings on Public Square without obstructing views, of the HQ and also out of it.  That plus a 400' tower on the west side of HQ1 and I think we have a pretty great complex!

if they really do want a tower for their business partners (as theyve stated). maybe the move actually would be to build a garage on superior/w6 that can accommodate a future tower. and build hq2 where the welcome center is on PS.

it's hard to tell their future growth. especially since they've been so focused on M&A over the last ten years.

Edited by Whipjacka

I don’t think the welcome center is going anywhere, anytime soon. A better bet may be to buy one of the surrounding surface parking lots and build new there, tunneling underground if need be to connect to SHW1. Underground pedestrian tunnels exist here and are still used between the JC and the Huntington parking garage.

I can’t think of a better location for a building accommodating relocated businesses/employees than the Superior/Prospect wedge site across the street from the new HQ. No parking would need to be built to accommodate it, as plenty of parking already exists that currently supports the original HQ, and it’s directly connected to the Rapid, as well as 2 connected hotels, which I imagine would be handy for new residents.

There was a building proposed for that site years ago, but I couldn’t locate it. Would be awesome if one of you could dig it up!

@CleveFan @Paul in Cleveland  After CleveFan's perfectly stated comment on the previous page, I've come to the conclusion that for the good of a skyline-in-total, a completely different design "adds" more than a twin.  So, I started fooling around with PaulinCleveland's photo again.  I dunno, I think it beats the "dominating monolithic complex" look, as CleveFan so aptly put it.  Not that I would think any developer would ever do this with their two buildings.

Yes, a different shape is needed. There are too many boxy buildings currently.

Yes! Look to the London skyline for inspiration.

Here it is. I never throw anything away (digitally, anyway). This is the proposed 1994 hotel expansion...

I don’t think SW would ever do something like this -  but an  homage to the never built circular Ameritrust  Tower might be really cool  - it had that blue glass similar to HQ1 but contrasted with a lighter material of some kind. .

The circular shape - I’m sure would reduce floor plate sizes, increase height and costs.  But it would “open up” the view to HQ1 when looking from the west add - a very popular perspective to downtown.

Ok, not keeping my "fingers crossed" for the first building, but that's what it looked like to me.  The second building reminds me of the medieval PPG HQ in Pittsbugh, which would really be amusingly ironic for a SW building.

I liked the design of the proposed AmeriTrust tower, except for the top section. It looked similar to the Ohio Bell building on 9th Street which is one of my favorite buildings downtown.

@urb-a-saurusI agree - I just grabbed two buildings real quick that looked different.  The "PPG" one is actually the gorgeous, rather Batman-y Brooklyn Tower, just squished a lot.  Doubt we'd get so lucky as that.  ;)

Phase 2 will likely play second fiddle to HQ1 so I wouldn't expect a more interesting or expensive facade. My expectations aren't particularly high. I'll be happy to see another couple years with a tower crane at least.

Edited by Mendo

I have been informed today that tower 2 is a go. There's apparently been more going on behind the scenes than we thought, and they are further along. I'd say we see an announcement sometime this year.

I have been informed recently by insiders who are familiar with SHW (people in line with me at the paint store) that the second phase of the project will be talked about frequently on this forum.

Carry on.

Hey @cadmen  I'm surprised you didn't know about the special access privileges at SW for UO members.   I phone first to tell them I am friends of Ken and they typically meet me out in the back parking lot.  Big time savings for sure, but, hmmmm, now I wonder why they didn't chit chat much.....

Being friends with me might get you thrown off the 36th floor of the SHW HQ by certain execs and contractors.

I’ve often wondered if you’ve ever felt any, uh, let’s say, pressure from some of these powerful people. Particularly that time you told us all where Mr. Morikis lived! 😆

Ah,  I see how it may work.   "Hey, Ken can you ride up the construction elevator and meet us on the 36th floor.   We want you to be the first one to see how we will be adding 16 additional floors to our HQ1 build.   Feel free to bring your buddy, but no recording devices. "

Twenty-five years ago I ran a website called clevelandmob.com and wrote articles about past and then-present organized crime activities. After those experiences, I am not worried about anyone at or working with Sherwin-Williams.

What is going on at the top of the tower? The steel looks like its different. Is that the beginning of the slope portion of the tower?
