May 13, 20241 yr With thanks to @originaljbw for their awesome pic, I took a tiny bit of that, added a historical rendering (artist unknown), and came up with this. Woulda been pretty cool... Edited May 13, 20241 yr by chrino21
May 13, 20241 yr Interesting exercise on many levels: 1) - Why are both Ameritrust and SHW completed BEFORE Key Tower? 2) - What did SHW do with the shack since Ameritrust is already there? 3) - Where on earth will all the Ameritrust/ Hyatt visitors park since SHW built on the site of their proposed garage? 4) - That business at the top of Ameritrust looks gimmicky and kind of dated in hindsight. Dare I say I’m glad it didn’t get built?
May 13, 20241 yr @JohnSummit Indeed, it is mind-bending and problematic. Seriously, back in the day I wrote a fairly blistering critique/letter of the proposed Ameritrust Tower, which the PD printed and actually quoted to the architect during a later interview. He laughed it off as a compliment, which it clearly wasn't. I was glad at the time it didn't get built, but have softened just a tiny bit since. If you want to see it in action, they ended up building something very similar in Sydney (Chifley Tower), which I always thought looked dated and unimpressive. Edited May 13, 20241 yr by chrino21
May 13, 20241 yr For what it's worth count me in as a huge fan of the design. Of course the magestic height didn't hurt but l also loved the combination of the curving glass coupled with the standard stone. I actually thought the crown was fun, a little whimsical. And the location right on PS was perfect. All l can say now is, "Oh well."

Me personally, I like a blend of old and new in a city's skyline. It adds to the history, showing progression. Look at Cleveland's now big four- Terminal Tower shows the building boom of the 30's, PS200 is very 80's ish, Key Tower is a 90's design and SW is current.
May 13, 20241 yr Author Terminal Tower is representative of the 1920s building boom. It was finished in 1928. There was no building boom in the 1930s or in the 1940s. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 13, 20241 yr I didn't realize the Van Sweringen brothers died so soon after the completion of Terminal Tower. Both were gone by 1936.

The collapse of their financial, real estate and railroad empire from the Great Depression killed them. They were brilliant men (and blatant racist/anti-semites). Read the book "Invisible Giants: The Empires of Cleveland's Van Sweringen Brothers." A must-read for anyone interested in Cleveland history and why some things exist (and don't exist) on Greater Cleveland's landscape. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program. May 13, 20241 yr Just posted to the Scranton Thread, but here's this pic and a few from Cleveland Water's Open House the other day These aren't that sexy, but definitely a unique view

Great views! My only comment is that by counting the number of chairs above in the tent, methinks it wasn't an overly crowded event 😏 Did they serve tap or bottled?
May 14, 20241 yr what pisses me off is that TNT is using old stock footage of downtown Cleveland and hasnt shown one live shot all night..,. how disrespectful
May 14, 20241 yr ESPN did the same thing - downtown shots of the skyline with not even a trace of the SW building. Lazy, bad journalism.

Ha without going too far off topic they honestly had hundreds of folks (and half the cle water payroll there lol) And thanks! Honestly it's fun seeing the new places the building pops from.
May 14, 20241 yr Those are the shots TBS/TNT/NBA (and! destination cleveland) should be using. One from today's bike commute - SHW pretty much fills the gap in W25 looking towards the city around Metro...
May 14, 20241 yr We started a campaign to update google earth data, surely we can do the same for ESPN... 😆
May 15, 20241 yr From the JonesDrones IG today- we’re not tired of looking at this new skyline at all!
May 15, 20241 yr This is about the best view of downtown i know....coming off the Shoreway headed east...the perception of density is fantastic. I only wish the original Nucleus was part of the shot

May 15, 20241 yr Google photos will randomly remind me of pictures from years past. Funny seeing this one pop up today from one I took a year ago.

May 17, 20241 yr The interesting view is going to be from the Terminal Tower observation deck. I'm not sure of its actual height (I've seen 668' but I doubt that) but it's got to be close to the height of SW.

May 17, 20241 yr Interesting Google Earth quirk. The arial shots show SW close to completion but there is no sign of it on streetview.

May 18, 20241 yr From about an hour ago today. I liked how TT was reflected. My hovercraft is full of eels
May 21, 20241 yr Those pics from the lake perspective are probably my favorite for showing the diversity of Cleveland's architecture and for expanding the skyline beyond what is often shown when taking in downtown from the OHIO City perspective. The city looks most modern from the lakefront as well. Interesting synergy and connection between the Hilton's design and SW. The 4th pic is probably my favorite, as the TT isn't obstructed and we still see most of the major buildings easily. Question - where would a Nucleus site tower appear from that lakefront perspective? and a P.S. Just imagine that same view with no football stadium and a few residential towers on the lakefront in its place - wow! Edited May 21, 20241 yr by CleveFan
May 21, 20241 yr Author Thank goodness the SHW tower wasn't designed as turned 180 degrees. In the coming years, people would be asking if the Hilton was part of the SHW HQ complex. Although some still might since their rooftops are a near-mirror image.... May 21, 20241 yr @KJP I wonder if it would be cheaper to jack up the Hilton and roll it down the street as Building Two, then build Hilton a new Justice Center II? Ya gotta keep an open mind and come up with creative solutions when urban planning! Edited May 21, 20241 yr by chrino21

May 21, 20241 yr Please send these photos to Spectrum to use for their background shots of Cleveland. Their current shots do not do the City justice.

The architectural variety and the density of the skyline is much more impressive. They seem to consistently choose the view over the Flats toward downtown. Besides, you’d be surprised how many people who are researching the city don’t realize that Cleveland sits on this massive body of fresh water call Lake Erie.
