Maybe SW is announcing a purchase of PPG. Reddit rumors in q4 from workers within the company are expecting a sale. But who knows could be completely baseless.

I don’t see how a hypothetical SW purchase of PPG could survive antitrust scrutiny.

Had to wait for the thread to unlock, but here's the Crains article about the construction delays/redos:

Sherwin-Williams new HQ, R&D center face delays over protective coating

Wait so the headquarters for the largest coatings company in the world is being delayed because of... problems with coatings? Maybe I'm being too cynical, but imagine the irony if Apple were to delay a new campus because of computer problems.

What type of protective coating, please?  The article is behind a paywall.

As a SW employee, we were previously told we'd be given a 6 month notice as to when we're moving in. Last week we were told we will find out in the coming weeks when we're moving in, and we may not have a 6 month notice.

Can confirm that it was announced that the move-in schedules would be sent out no later than March. But it's unknown what the schedule looks like or how long each wave of the move-in will have. I heard there was going to be roughly 15 waves with 2 weeks per wave, not sure if that holds true or not still.

Another article on the fire resistant coating.  Here's a snippet.

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/02/sherwin-williams-faces-fireproofing-problems-with-its-own-product-at-new-cleveland-hq.html

Both Sherwin-Williams and city officials said the company — not city inspectors —discovered the problem and notified the city of its plan to fix it. The problem involves the thickness of an intumescent fire-resistant coating, a material designed to expand when exposed to heat and buy the building time before it collapses in a fire.

“In July 2024, a third-party certification provider changed its listing for one of these protective coating products. The coating’s applied thickness necessary to achieve certain fire ratings increased as a result of this listing change,” Sherwin-Williams spokeswoman Julie S. Young said in an emailed response to questions.

Does anyone know how complete The "Shack" is?  When will the exterior landscape begin construction?

I walked by it last week for the first time in a while and they finally got the majority of the glass entryway up except for the door that will go in, that's currently still fabbed up with plywood. Looking on the inside, it looks to be a ways off. All the metal studs are still exposed that I could see. So none of the finish work has started.

Sherwin-Williams HQ opening delayed 7 months
By Ken Prendergast / February 6, 2025

NEOtrans was first to report several weeks ago that a grand-opening ceremony for Sherwin-Williams’ new headquarters was scheduled for next month despite that a “major hiccup and flaw” in construction of the tower had to be repaired. Now, that ceremony has been pushed back by seven months, according to public records secured by NEOtrans.

I guess the silver lining here (assuming the headquarters was the first and only installation of this new fire retardant coating) is there is not a long line of angry external customers lined up to collect penalties from SW.   Still ...not clear why they went ahead before the material was fully tested and qualified.

I miss the days when NEOTRANS used to bring good news.

@KJP  Is there really a need for the tent on Public Square for the future grand opening ceremony?  I would think the headquarter's complex will be completed within that timeline. The "shack" should hold the event

Could be! I don't really know/care how SHW spends its money as long as they spend it here.

I believe you're reading the story incorrectly.  The material is likely fine just applied to the incorrect thickness.  Need a few extra coats.

The subsequent testing showed the thickness needs to be higher than they applied.   So , SW had not received final certification from their test labs that their original applied thickness was effective.   That's putting "the cart before the horse."

They are fortunate that this was discovered now - in their own headquarters - and not after widespread industry adoption.

@Bearcats31  Where are we in disagreement?

A third party certifier came back after it had already been certified and changed their mind about the thickness requirement.  I would think the third party would have some responsibility in improperly certifying a product?

We don’t even know what product they used; it may not have been a SW product for all we know. Usually a company like SW would not be involved in a construction project at that granular of a level. They hire a CM and contractor. There is a consultant inspection firm that, on behalf of the owner, is supposed to be checking these things. Likely the inspector didnt do thier job.

Oh jeez. Do you mean bad like Progressive is going to add another Progressive sign at Progressive Field or really bad like SHW got tired of waiting for their new hq. building so they're moving to Atlanta next week?

Look at the Circle Square thread

Grabbed a couple pics en route to the new Good Pizza on E. 4 (little pricey but delicious). I know we all hoped for a little bit more, but the Shack looks pretty good in person. Landscaping and lighting will definitely help too.

The shack looks better than a parking lot.  And it isn't obstructing views from its neighboring buildings.

It looks fine. I do wish it wasn't set back from Public Square. There was something really nice before the buildings were torn down for the planned Ameritrust Tower.  Public Square felt balanced.

I'd rather have a 7/11 on the spot.  At least that would have some public interaction and utility.

But I guess it's better than a parking lot and doesn't block the view of any of the non crappy buildings around it.  Which is the most depressing possible thing to say about what was the most prominent development site in NEO.

SW should've built (or arranged with a developer) to put a nice 20-25 story hotel there - but I guess they didn't want their HQ  "blocked" from the square.  But more than half  of the tower would've still been unblocked even with such a hotel - and just imagine how much more life there would've been on the square.  And, as others said, some months ago - there should've definitely been a plan to buildatop the parking garage.  Really silly that they didn't plan for that.  Wish there was something new and positive to talk about - but there isn't.

I'd have to imagine if there were any plans for a second tower this delay has almost certainly halted those for awhile. Hope I'm wrong though

I wonder how many people coming from public square will be walking up to the shacks entrance hoping to get into the cafe. You can clearly see it from the sidewalk...

Should we rename "The Shack" to "Private Square"?

Or a small boutique hotel of about 10 stories would have been nice.

Idk about y'all but I like to think of the shack as Sherwin Williams' winter snow plow attachment ;-)

The shack truly is a shame but the real issue with the square activation is tower city and that casino. That whole corner outside Jack is a homelessness encampment (this is not an exaggeration you guys know very well what I mean lol). Until they get that cleaned up and activated nothing really matters. Hopefully Bedrock will be the shove that get's the square back on track. I also did like the museum of illusions addition, a good draw off east 4th.

But SHW did the square no favors (for now) except for covering up an embarrassing parking lot and visual appeal.

Bedrock is the key to it all baby, because that will make people come off east 4th and expand out. Watching closely.

I agree.

People on here are always complaining about the lack of Public Space in the SWHQ, but all the other public space around the square is already under utilized: 200 Public Square's Atrium, storefronts on Lower Euclid and Prospect and Tower City.

Let's get that space activated to it's fullest potential before adding more space that the market is dictating is really not needed.

This is true, but it's also a bit of an exaggeration. IMO the entrance to Tower City has improved significantly since Bedrock's streetscape improvements. The presence of ambassadors and security guards has also helped.

In order for complete activation of the square it would be ideal to encourage activity on all sides, and the shack is not very conducive to that. It's obviously here to stay for the short term but a better long term use for the site would be huge.

Programming in the grass area of the square leaves a lot to be desired.

It's decently activated in the summer with the little stage there but there's no shade, you're absolutely burning up out there during the day.

Maybe worth going into deeper discussion in the Streetscapes/Greenspace thread, though.
