A fascinating angle that makes Key Tower disappear

I know it’s winter but also a reminder of the barren concrete landscape of too much of downtown. Comprehensive streetscaping would do more for the city than a few more tall buildings.

The city needs both. But yes, we still haven't fully recovered from the 70s when this city was more bustling and built for the traffic. They need to do something about Superior, BADLY. I know they had some kind of plan but I haven't heard updates on it in awhile.

Reaaally hoping SHW brings in more staple buildings, tenants, to the square and warehouse district, which should naturally help the streetscape. But getting less and less optimistic by the month. The unfortunate thing about SHW is that it doesn't really bring new foot-traffic in itself, just relocating across the street. And hoping to God Cliffs doesn't leave. That would be another tragic decimation to foot-traffic, following Med Mutual. :(

The Superior Midway is slated to start construction later this year - doesn't help with the other side of PS, but it's a start.

Now that you mention it, I do find it odd that this portion of Superior is excluded

Maybe not the thread for it, but it's part of the city/county's plan to have bike infrastructure extend from the eastern side of PS to D-S bridge (probably not midway style, but something).

Does anyone have any updates on "The Shack" exterior landscape? Has any progress been made? I still feel this should be called "Private Square"

Couple of screeners from the Cavs game last night.

I keep feeling better and better about that new tower the more I see it on display.

If new high rises come in the future I do hope our skyline doesn't turn into all glass

^ Ha! Looong way to go before that happens. Let's put up another half dozen glass highrises and then we can decide if they're too much or not.

For real! We already have a lot of historical skyscrapers compared to other cities - we need more modern skyscrapers to portray a modern city to the rest of the world lol

^ Correct. Every big city I visit has lots of new glass towers.  And a few more under construction.  Cleveland skyline looks a bit stodgy by comparison.

Has anyone heard how the skyscraper has managed with bird's striking into it? Was the glass treated ?  Since Cleveland doesn't have many tall buildings we do have great representations of the prevailing styles of bygone decades.  Will the all glass trend evolve into something else? I am sure it will. Happy that we have a few glass additions to our skyline

Perhaps. But whenever that happens, most of us will be gone.

The all glass "trend"?  Is that the one that started in the 1950's we're talking about here?

It's funny because it all is about the unique layout of our downtown street grid.

We are tied for 4th in the Midwest for buildings over 500 feet with Columbus.

We have the most buildings over 300 feet (22) in Ohio and I believe the tallest skyline overall

We have the 27th tallest skyline in the US.

^That, and most of our skyscrapers are actually pretty wide for their heights - if they were all more slim and condensed, it would look a lot taller than it is. That's one reason looking at SW and Key Tower when driving north on I-90 (Innerbelt bridge) is one of the tallest looking views, because you're seeing the thin side of all their profiles.

Three of the four tallest buildings in Ohio are on Public Square.   Four of the six tallest are on or adjacent to same.   Make the cutoff 600' and we rank higher since Columbus and Cincy have one each.

People complain about the low density of our skyline but that's a good thing.   It lets sunlight reach the ground.   Manhattan figured that out a century ago, hence the setbacks.

Outside of Manhattan we have the tallest historical skyscraper.   Terminal will be a century old in a couple years.    The next building to break 700' in the US was built in 1964.

I remember this meme as Michigan and Pennsylvania people watching Ohioans during the virus.  :)

Truth is, SW is a largely insular company and always has been.   Not like Progressive, but close.   We knew this all along.

And large open spaces like Public Square and the malls made it spread out as well.

Sherwin Williams will be lighting up the building for Cleveland Guardians home opener. Not sure if it will be all the lights but it will be at least the name at the top.

^ Also confirms the above regarding lighting up the sign on April 7th:

Sherwin-Williams aims to maintain a strong presence downtown and will start illuminating the Sherwin-Williams sign at the global headquarters on April 7.

Is the crown being lit even still a thing? I know we have seen renderings, but on SW's website all they're showing is single strip of lights running up building.

I think a few months back you could see the light strips being installed, so I think it still is.

Oh I didn't realize that was witnessed. Are there photos on here? I don't remember seeing that.

Sherwin and Key merging?😉

I doubt they are going to light around the name.

Looks nice, but I still have this looming feeling that we will not get a lit crown. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.

Looks like they are working on the vertical light stripe too.

Better get that lit crown! The vertical strip is cool, and better than nothing, but the crown would be seen from all angles.

Okay good! haha I guess just since all the renderings on their website didn't have it I figured they had changed it.

Not sure if the crown lighting is still happening. I meant you can see the main vertical strip down the side being tested.

I swear there were some close up drone pics quite some time ago showing the crown lighting strips being installed.

oooh yeah I did notice those. However, that red one has been there for a while, so I just figured it was an exit sign or something. If that red and blue is part of the vertical lighting it seems so underwhelming. Especially the blue.

You saw them on here? I'll have to look back and see if I can find them. I assume it was after they installed the name?

As far as the crown being lit up...something l don't think has been discussed, the pic l saw on this forum showed it having a whitish color. The SHW lettering is also white. How is that going to work? If both are some version of white won't they cancel each other out? Or maybe l missed it. Does the lighting of either (both?) have the ability to change color so that they can stand out from another?

The crown renderings I've seen where it's lit can change color.

This is the only rendering I've seen with the crown lit up. But yeah, all the renderings with the strip had them changing colors.

I just realized this is in the shape of a paint brush and the lights changing represents the different paint colors. I can't believe I missed that.
