Photo dump from the site today. Currently there are two cranes up (one big red one and one small black one, with what appeared to be a pretty substantial blue one being prepped).

 

Very exciting to see these official first steps toward construction and finally transforming this parking crater!!

Wish I could have snagged a photo, but there are two tents on the Jacobs' Lot for anyone interested in seeing the tallest structure on that site in over thirty years. 😉

Unfortunately I don't believe that what ends up permanently on the Jacobs' lot is going to be much taller than those tents.

That’s where the garage is being built. Im sure after the groundbreaking ceremony all that space will get cleared out.

SHW et al wanted to get the parking garage done first and that will still happen. But the start of construction on the garage was delayed by their redesign of it (to be taller and skinnier) which means having to resubmit the construction permit applications.

The cranes aren’t visible from my preferred perch but they have quite a presence from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

They also look pretty cool from the Main Avenue-Shoreway bridge. I'll have to wait until I'm a passenger in a car or bus to safely get a photo.

I don't mean to be greedy and l know it's still a ways off but l wonder what are the chances we get a sizable addition to the hotel across the street? First things first l guess - the much needed investment to bring the existing hotel up to date and then knock down that newish addition (ballroom??) add a 10-16 structure and we get a nice little center of activity on that stretch of road. 

 

With the new construction (SHW, hotel addition) plus the rehab of the 2 buildings on the north side of Public Square we might even see real activity in the square. You know, the casual interaction and life you see in those smaller urban parks in New York and Philadelphia. If you've spent any time in there you know what l mean.

 

At this point the new Public Square is mostly a disappointment when it comes to use. Wouldn't it be great if it was a place where people casually hung out and wasn't just a pass-through?

I'm greedy and all too, but that is one of the largest hotel ballrooms in America - with a capacity for 3,000 people. This is in addition to the many other major spaces in the hotel.  I'm sure what might be preferable is to build above or around it and keep that outstanding facility intact as it is a terrific supplement to downtown meeting space for grand local events and national conventions, etc.  This should not be overlooked when thinking about supplement & support for activities of the new SW HQ.

^Agreed. No need to tear down the ballroom---its a ballroom--how many of those do we have Downtown? There is SO much space to build downtown-even physically next to the hotel--no need to tear down existing assets like the Ballroom (or Burke Lakefront).

I wasn't sure about the condition of the ballroom. If it's still a viable and valuable structure then there's an argument for keeping it. My main reason for removing it was to create space for an addition to the hotel. 

 

I know l've seen a rendition of an addition on Superior and l thought it was the perfect design compliment and placement. The picture l saw blocked the view of the ballroom so l assumed it was torn down. If there is room for both all the better. If not then the question is what is the better purpose - a viable ballroom or a hotel addition that seamlessly interfaces with the sidewalk. Because right now that section of Superior just to the south is of a hole in the foreground and in the background an awkwardly placed, esthetically challenging block of a structure that in no way fits with the classic architecture of the Terminal Tower complex.

No need to tear down a structure that's still useful especially when there is still empty lots across the street. Rather would see a mixed used building (Hotel and Residential) on one of the WHD lots. Something similar to the design of the Aloft project in the flats. Hotel fits the stature of the surrounding WHD buildings and the Residential portion could rise to be another highrise to add density, fitting the height being added by SHW.

^ i believe sw still wishes to have a top shelf hotel. i dont think we have heard differently?? so hopefully they can partner with somebody to build one.

 

i dk about mixed use, but i can see the hotel having both short and long term rooms. maybe even condos?

 

so the fancy hotel piece is an interesting mystery. even more so than a phase two for offices.

Yep - not sure how many caissons will be going in but once they’re done, it’ll be time for the tower cranes.

I love that they're starting with the tower rather than the pavilion or garage. It just feels like jumping into the excitement with two feet.

^The tower will take longer than the garage or crappy two-story bldg so if they want them all to finish at the same time, the tower should get the head start by many months.

^ And it gives them time to reconsider the crappy two-story bldg.  😀

No, just an example of what will be taking place. 

 

Speaking of cranes - looks like part of (possibly) a tower crane mast was delivered. Any experts care to weigh in?

^ Interesting. That blue crane section was there at the beginning the other week and I remember walking by and thinking it must be part of the fixed-crane assembly. A few days later it then disappeared off the site and I though I’d maybe dreamt it! Now it’s back.

I assume the local TV stations will have some coverage on their newcasts this evening, although it will likely be brief.
