Duke Energy Tower in Charlotte gives us a glimpse of what SHW Tower will look like. Though ours will be 60ft taller. Goes along with the BofA/Key Tower twinning.

The Charlotte and Cleveland skylines are very similar - especially with this clone of SW - or is it the other way around?

I’m just distracted by the living trees.

I was in Charlotte only once about 5 years ago and was impressed with a few things. Plenty of high rise density. Downtown really only has one main road but l remember it being quite green, much greener than Cleveland. Plus the main drag was full of street level retail and it seemed every restaurant had big open fronts onto the  street. 'Course it was summer in the South.

I can't speak for the 'burbs but downtown had a very shiny and new feel to it. I also can't think of one reason why the place exists but...still, there it is.

Yes, and that Bank of America tower with the crown on it was also designed by Pelli and completed around the same time as Key Tower.  You can definitely see the resemblance.

I assume there are not very many old buildings in downtown Charlotte.  But we are digressing.

Any estimate on when SHW tower will be going vertical?

While SHW hasn't said this, others have said they're responsive because they wanted to get out in front of any rumors I might share. I've even had some developers call me and say they're planning such-and-such and have asked me to not write anything until they've secured the property, financing, etc. If they're honestly trying to improve the city with their investment and not trying to negatively exploit a situation, then I've honored those requests.

So 3-4 tower cranes over Cleveland in the next 6 months to 1.5 years at least!

You think City Club will have two cranes?

I'm including the known University Circle jobs too. City Club will most likely only have one.

I had forgotten about Library Lofts, but it likely will have one as well.

I was thinking there MAY be overlap with the Artisan's cranes and the other projects downtown.

And don’t forget a crane for Bridgeworks. .

Ah, for some reason I read "Cleveland" and inferred "downtown." My bad. It's also possible the six-story, 300k+ Apex office building and parking deck about to start at MetroHealth will need a crane although I don't know if it will need a tower crane.

Artisan: 1 crane but coming down by end of summer?

SHW HQ: 2 cranes

City Club: 1 crane

Library Lofts: 1 crane

Neuro building: 1-2 cranes

Cole expansion: maybe 1 crane?

Apex project: maybe 1 crane?

Things like these extensive crane discussions are why friends and family think I am so weird when I excitedly relate to them about my participation in this forum 😉

Cuyahoga county courthouse, Bedrock? HBSE? Viaduct? Magellan?  Does anyone think any of these

break ground ?

Maybe if they decide not to renovate/expand the existing JC, maybe in a couple of years, maybe in about 5 years, no, and not likely.

That rainbow walk is 💯 🙌 🌈

This is going to be such an awesome tour attraction. Just thinking about the foot traffic this project would bring is amazing.

Why? There's no way for the public to interact with the building. It's a glassy fortress.

At least it’ll be surrounded by reactived buildings. 75 PS, 55 PS, Fahrenheit and it’s roof patio, Renaissance Hotel renovation, Rockefeller Bldg reno…… And their renders of Frankfort look decent and can hopefully lead to development surrounding it on its west end.

using the frankfort wall for a chance to showcase public art turned into selling space to destination cleveland for an ad campaign pretty quickly

The added lighting on top is a big improvement at least, I think visually it will have a big impact even if the street level leaves much to be desired.

I will say I am a fan of the way-finding designed to look like paint samples... clever, colorful and playful.

The project is still an asset to the city, but one of the big urbanist benefits was supposed to be eating up the surface parking lots in the middle of the city.  The current site plan shows it still leaves a lot of asphalt.  Hopefully the hypothetical second tower comes to fruition.

SW Site Plan.JPG

^ Right.  Hopefully, the parcels north of Frankfort will be developed soon after the completion of the SHW HQ.  As for the second tower, who knows if or when that will happen.  That parcel could be surface parking for a long time.

they're only removing 2/5 of the parking space. it'd be so nice if they build out sooner rather than later

I think I like the 'Sign Family Option 2' in here, kind of cheesy but also unique - incorporating paint swatches into their signage vs generic signage. Idk how it will age but idk, seems pretty unique branding opportunity.

PS - didn't mean to steal @mrclifton88's thunder upthread! Glad we're in agreement haha

I also really like the color garden and color walk!

As far as the trees, a quick search shows mature heights as Frontier Elm 30'-40', Princeton Sentry Ginkgo 40'-50', Street Keeper Honey locust 45', and Sour Gum 30'-50'

This may be a dumb question but is SHW planting and maintaining the "gardens" or the city? I think you all get my drift on this one.

Agreed! Big improvement on the lighting!  That top will be much more a part of the night skyline now.  Can’t wait for this baby to be built!

That’s dope I love it

I like that they've added the LED strips at the tip. Will make it very visible from a distance and add positively to the skyline for those coming into town, especially since a lot of the lighting our downtown towers used to display at night doesn't get turned on anymore.

Being in the design industry and having worked on a few wayfinding projects, I would have KILLED to have such a volleyball-style "set and spike" opportunity. 🙂

I apologize if this has been addressed earlier in the thread, but are they designing the parking garage so that additional office space could be built on top of it in the future?

@3231 No, I don't believe they are. I seem to recall asking that of the development team.

Sherwin-Williams HQ to rise in August

By Ken Prendergast / May 27, 2022

Although the new Sherwin-Williams (SHW) headquarters has been under construction since Nov. 29, 2021, the only evidence of it that passersby could see are several mobile cranes making their way around the site. That’s going to continue to be the case for another two months, according to SHW officials.

Right, I remember the commission heavily suggesting the development team look into it, I remember the head from the sherwin williams immediately shooting it down but after some back and forth was slightly convinced to look into it. I’m guessing they ended up ignoring the feedback even though the commission suggested it wouldn’t be much added work.

Personably didn’t care for the SW person heading the project, seemed completely out of his element and didn’t represent the company well.

At least that big crane will be on the scene as The 22 Browns season gets underway - that should be a good look.

Pretty sure the person you're thinking of was from the design team, I had the same reaction though. Not a pleasant person at all.

Should be more like Huntington with street level retail.
