May 28, 20223 yr There isn't a single bench for anyone to enjoy the outdoor public spaces that have been proposed. I also find the pathways make little sense with where the crosswalks align with Public Square. I will be interested to hear what the Commission says.

If history is any guide the Commissions (its a joint Landmarks and Planning meeting) will offer numerous suggestions and SHW will nod and say "what an interesting idea" and then completely ignore everything and then will be thanked by the city. Lets face it, we all know who has all the leverage. In the meantime an Ohio City homeowner will have to fight and claw and come back to Landmarks multiple times as it fusses over a porch rail. May 28, 20223 yr There has been of course lots of thoughtful discussion for many months in this thread on the design of the tower and welcome center. However, everytime a lighting or landscape improvement is added to these rendering packages, I personally feel more disappointed in the blase design. Does anyone here think it fulfils SW original intent of building an iconic headquarters to attract the next generation of employees? Edited May 28, 20223 yr by DO_Summers

I have pretty much just accepted what we are getting for the simple fact that it is a erasing those surface lots, and there is potential for more development on the remaining lots. It certainly is not cutting edge, iconic or even more than just average. Again, it is what it is and I accept it. However, I am still fuming over that little shack on the Jacobs lot

It's there for people to not use. It's there to provide a controlled buffer between the public and Sherwin-Williams' employees and visitors.
May 28, 20223 yr So no benches. Should we assume then that the doors in the (un)welcome center only open from the inside? Whatever. These are small (but legitimate) complaints. My biggest gripe is building the research center in Brecksville. That one really hurts. Then again, the headquarters could have been built in Brecksville too. Or Solon or Strongsville or, god forbid, Atlanta. At least we do have the headquarters downtown so in that case...YEAH SHW.
May 28, 20223 yr Maybe they are afraid homeless people will be sleeping on the benches. I suppose the welcome center will be an improvement over a parking lot, but it will still be an embarrassment. As for research center, it would have been nice if they could found a location within Cleveland (Opportunity Corridor?) or maybe Highland Hills which I believe has a tax sharing agreement with the city of Cleveland. I assume they got a sweet deal from Brecksville.
May 28, 20223 yr I’m hoping for no benches because yes the homeless will make it their resting place and the area would become trashy.

Think of the “Welcome Center” as an attractive buffer between the public and the HQ. If they wanted the public in, they would’ve put in a rooftop restaurant or similar - that’s obviously not what they want. This is the front lawn that you’re not supposed to be playing on. I’m thrilled to have the HQ downtown off the square, but let’s be honest…

Not to mention insulting to an egalitarian democractic society.

Will make it very visible from a distance and add positively to the skyline for those coming into town, especially since a lot of the lighting our downtown towers used to display at night doesn't get turned on anymore. This is only tangentially related to SW HQ developments- but since you mentioned it- which downtown towers that were formerly lit up are no longer?

PNC/National City used to have spot lights that bathed the whole thing in light, so did all of the Terminal Tower, all of the 200 Public Square Building. More of the crown of the Key Tower, I want to say Rhodes Tower was also bathed in light. Edited May 29, 20223 yr by Mov2Ohio
May 30, 20223 yr ^ PNC still have those uplights. Disappointingly, they only use them nowadays when downtown is on national tv. My hovercraft is full of eels

Yea, the spotlights are definitely there, but I think there is an agreement amongst B.O.M.A. member buildings to dim the lights to limit the number of birds dying by flying into the lit buildings. Apparently Cleveland lies in the north south travel space for migratory birds. As you mentioned, only on certain occasions does that go out the window and all of the lights come on.
May 30, 20223 yr 5 hours ago, CleveFan said: Didn’t know there were birds migrating at night. As it relates to the new SW Tower and it's neighbors, yes It's true that most do. I only learned this a few years ago from a NPS park ranger. "While plenty of birds — such as swallows, hawks, and hummingbirds — migrate during the day, the majority of land birds travel at night. Although it would seem more difficult to fly when it's dark, there are good reasons for the nighttime maneuvers." https://www.treehugger.com/why-do-birds-migrate-night-4864358
May 31, 20223 yr The Colorado State U AeroEco lab and Cornell Lab of Ornithology actually publish daily migratory maps in the Spring and Fall of how many birds are expected to be flying through US cities each night. Its pretty sophisticated tracking based on weather radar data and such. See for example: Birdcast.info or Aeroecolab.com Edited May 31, 20223 yr by DO_Summers Typo
June 6, 20223 yr they tabled approval landscape/hardscape aspect of the plan last week. they want seating throughout, parks on w6 corners of superior/franfort/st Clair, extend tabletop created by the sidewalk crossing Frankfort to the loading dock. they also talked about the fencing but I doubt that'll change. sherwin seemed like they don't want to do any of that, but we'll see.

June 17, 20222 yr It is a great view. And while I absolutely hate what they are doing on the Jacobs lot with that shack (welcome center), maybe the additional green space and landscaping in front of the building will help mitigate the huge mistake we made on the square by keeping Superior as a Cutthrough. That blunder is really telling in the above photo.

June 17, 20222 yr Guess I’m pretty lonely here on “team shack”. I think a low building is just what the doctor ordered for that space. 55 PS is a real beaut and I’d hate to see it blocked.

I think I’d be okay with the shack if it felt like it was part of the tower. Even if it was just for aesthetics. A sloped glass canopy going over West 3rd would’ve done wonders, and not made it look out of place.

June 18, 20222 yr I was playing around with "The Shack" in photoshop. I had a couple of thoughts that could help the design . Could the central atrium be bumped op an additional floor to pay homage to the arcade's glass ceilings? This would also open up the view to the SHW Tower from Public Square. Expanding on the SHW and their plan for colorful floral plantings, why not make a "ColorSplash Glass Pavilion" surrounding those central plantings. I would make the structure as transparent as possible with a mirrored ceiling that would reflect the plantings from below. How dramatic could this be during the Winter months to see vibrant floral plantings? This space could be 4sided and separated from the corporate spaces and would be open to the public for refuge during inclement weather. Inspiration comes from the Apple Store in Chicago
