Maybe actual growth is occurring... Have you looked at the regional employment data and city of Cleveland income tax revenue data lately?

 

Or, to keep the discussion on topic, have you looked at Sherwin-Williams' local employment data lately? Sometimes I think Clevelanders are so busy wallowing in their own self-pity of a lost, great past that they're missing the successes that are already here.

SW have options. When you are a company their size you have the ability to request alot in terms of tax cuts and incentives. Hopefully the mayor and Cleveland council members can put up a good fight and offer the incentives that SW will be looking for to build their HQ, but I can bet that their will be mayor's from cities all across the country contacting SW and putting out various package deals. 

 

This is not a slam dunk by any means, and it's up to city leaders to get this done. One misstep could spell trouble.

I will say one thing however is that the local media is doing a completely awful job in telling the economic success stories that are occurring all around us. I try to do my part but I'm just a small-time blogger. The fact that I've been reporting on Sherwin-Williams HQ search for nearly a year without anybody else doing the same is utterly mind-blowing. The only mainstream media reports were instigated by and linked to my blog! Why does the local media have to rely on press releases before they report anything? Where is the journalistic aggressiveness in trying to get the stories rather than wait for the stories to come to them?

 

I'm about to beat the pants off the local media again with two more stories coming out today or tomorrow. Shame on them.

Everybody should just calm down. I fully believe that the city will give Sherman Williams a significant financial package to keep them here. It would be political suicide to let Sherman Williams leave Cleveland. Also what kind of message would we be sending to other perspective businesses that are considering Cleveland as a location. Failure is not an option in this situation and if we cant keep one of our own (Cleveland born and bred) then it will be time for pitch forks and torches to descend upon City Hall!!

The local media sucks. I find myself consistently disappointed that we live in a good sized market (19 in Television, 34 in radio) and we have a very small town-y media. They don’t report well on almost anything. There are some great reporters, don’t get me wrong, but more often than not they’re handcuffed

I know I keep repeating myself but people are going crazy (and I knew that would happen) over what I believe was a throw away sentence in a news release that basically contains no news.  In a few days I have a funny feeling SW's genius PR department is going to be regretting a few things.

I'm not sure that statement was a throwaway sentence. SW has all the right to explore all their options, including different cities and states. They have no obligation to be loyal to one city. At the end of the day they are a business with share holders and there main target is growth and profitablity. If they can achieve that in Cleveland then that's awesome! But they will definitely be thorough and diligent about selecting the site of their next HQ.

Nothing has changed from what KJP has been reporting. This is an acknowledgment to his blog posts and probably the reason for the press release. Relax people!

That's some cleveland.com level clickbait right there! Cleveland media seems to be highly skilled in the copy/paste method on press releases. As a publicly traded company, what else would their press release about a new HQ search say?

You are 100% correct.  Corporate due diligence is a "thing" and  an important thing to cover your ass, especially for shareholders, to avoid potential lawsuits.  That said dd is often just a show and in my mind it clearly is here.

for pete's sake that remark is a mandatory statement as a ploy for tax breaks and whatever else, but i would not worry about it. at least at this point.

Turner and Gilbane are international firms, but my understanding is that their local offices were sent the RFQs. Similar situation with Vocon which is developing site options. Vocon is HQ'd here but they also have offices in New York City and Los Angeles.

On another note.  That's a risky release for Sherwin Williams to put out, because some of their employees are probably worried for their jobs.

This is a very good point. They just told up to 4,400 NEO workers that in the next 4 years or so they might have to move out of state or find a new job?  If the workforce wasn't pre-informed that this release would be put out, I'm sure there are lots of questions swirling around today about it and a lot of people will need to be reassured that it indeed is just due diligence.  

I'm sure the internal news release looks a lot different than the external one. 

If Sherwin-Williams stays in downtown Cleveland, I'll be the happiest I've ever been.

If they decide to leave Cleveland but stay in NEO, I'll be disappointed but not angry.

If they decide to leave the state, I'll legit never buy their paint again.

Totally agree. I don't think they played this well at all, especially when you consider the timeline and lack of board approval. I suppose there's a leverage play aspect to it, but did they really need to put out a release to let the city know that they're going to explore all of their options? Seems extremely premature and to your point, likely hampers employee moral and maybe even hiring.

Crazy how if the Sherwin-Williams presser didn't include the three words "several other states", the entire narrative would be different and this thread would be 100 posts shorter. ?

Agreed. I think at least some word would get out from the employees if they were being told to pack up and leave in 4 years and no one told them anything beforehand.

Imagine the wild rumors circulating in HQ and R&D, the chaos... ?

Check out this informational video produced by Sherwin-Williams. It provides a historical timeline of what has been a very transformative and very successful corporation.

 

Cleveland and other local officials BEST NOT drop the ball on this matter ... Losing a corporate giant like this would be a death blow to the city all the way around.

My only hope is that when those SHW cranes are hard at work over downtown, the people that read this press release and said “woe is me” will have a whole new psyche.

So after the press release, the CEO sent out another reminder email to all their employees to keep their mouths shut if they had any more info. One of my buddies in the financial dep. actually has no idea about any of the details, and everyone's just going apesh*t in their offices trying to figure this out. The only thing that he does say is that there is a new building involved, but he doesn't know where it is but i told him some addl' info so that way he can spread the word.

 

 

^Big blunder, SHW. Not sending this release out to employees with the foresight to see this "chaos" happening and letting rumors and intrigue run rampant? Crazy to hear all of this confirmed coming from the inside...

If enough people at SHW now are "going crazy" about their future prospects and what'll happen to them/their jobs in four or so years, then I say the ball is definitely in SHW's court. 

How they react to a) the media possibly pushing the narrative that they are leaving NEO altogether and b) the general public pushing the narrative that it would kill the metaphorical heart of the city if they left, will be very interesting to see...

Sounds like complete panic in the CLE! Reminds me of a certain basketball situation..... 

They’re gonna need to settle this soon. My new next door neighbor (SHW sales exec of some capacity)  bought one of those $450000 Relief Property Lakewood rehabs this summer. He’d probably like to know.
