The SOHIO Building will block the view of any building on the Jacobs lot UNLESS the building is taller.

I wish they would have made the Sohio/BP building taller but more tapered towards the top.  Its stocky build blocks views of Terminal Tower from points east.

That could be interesting.  I love the Chateau Fairmont in Quebec, but this is something I think would be more appropriate overlooking the cuyahoga in Ohio City (at the corner of Detroit/W 25 or W 25 and Franklin), this would be an amazing addition to Ohio City and fit into the neighborhood architecture.  I could also see this on either sides of the flats. Even better behind Tower City, along Huron,  but built in an Art Deco design.

The Scranton Fortress...

If the SHW HQ doesn't end up being a glassy, avant-garde, 21st century tower, I think a well-executed(!) postmodern build could work nicely as well—three Midwest peer cities (DET, PIT, MKE) all feature something along those lines prominently in their skylines...

Just a little more patience. I'm waiting to see what's going to happen next in terms of COD filings. But I may have to update the article after it is published.

We won't know what the designs will be for many months, but I am starting to get a clearer picture as to how many jobs will be involved. And it sounds like it could be amazing.

Sherwin-Williams' new HQ+R&D = 6,000 jobs for downtown Cleveland

Sherwin-Williams' (SHW) top executives are urging department heads to consolidate as many activities and jobs as possible from around the world into its new headquarters and research facilities.

The end result of that directive is that SHW's global headquarters plus research and development (HQ+R&D) center could add 2,500 jobs, bringing the total for the entire campus to 6,000 employees, according to sources who spoke off the record and provided internal company data.

I was going to suggest the same.  Would be a good reason for a happy hour--somewhere near the site of course!

Rent a few parking spaces on Jacobs/Weston, throw up a few tables, have a catered lunch.

If anyone can get down to the Jacobs lot, there are currently multiple people at the bore holes taking samples. You could do your best @KJP impression and try to get some info.

Only during the winter months. Cleveland is beautiful and perfect during the summer.

As exciting as this is, I do hope they're able to find tenants for the spaces they'll be leaving in the suburbs. I'm all about growing dt cle but at the same time, its beneficial to have a humming hub AND humming spokes (suburbs).

TLDR: Get the tower built and hand off real estate to some good firms to make good on the suburban tax bases.

I'd like to believe there would be a revenue sharing agreement between CLE and the suburbs.  But with this deal, there probably won't be much tax revenue to share...

That's OK, @MayDay. Another UrbanOhioan/spy code-named 007 was on site as well and took this picture. He noted that DRS Enterprises and Strategic Environmental are working on the Jacobs lot. The latter was monitoring one of the wells from the back of their Hummer.

Maybe those were Urbanohio tailgaters watching things unfold!   In all seriousness though, what does soil sampling actually do?  Depth of bedrock?  Soil makeup?  I'm just curious...

Thanks for the usual great article KJP - The economic impact of SW’s decision to stay in CLE is going to be even bigger than one might initially realize. One line from the latest NEOtrans article that jumped out at me was that “the number of people visiting SHW’s seminars and 3-day training classes would fill more than 100 hotel rooms every weeknight for a year.” Talk about real impact, wow. That’s not even accounting for the restaurants and occasional sporting events, RRHF visits and shows that visitors might want to add to their work trips.

Obviously beyond the skyline and the optics for Cleveland, there is an incredible effect at “street level” - a renewed energy from real people and real jobs.  Yea, sign me up for that Urban Ohio Party.  I’ll bring the Diet Coke.

Should more than make up for the loss of the Lebron effect. All those people who came to town stayed in hotels and ate at restaurants while in town to catch a Cavs game.

Makes me wonder if they’ll have a hotel component to their complex. Thinking like how Comcast put a 4 Seasons hotel on the top floors of their Philly building.

From what I understand (and I hope @Jenny and others will  correct me), they aren't soil testing. That should have happened in 2015 when AECOM commissioned the geotech surveys of the Jacobs lot for SHW. When I asked a construction expert if that data is still valid, he said that the 2015 data won't change for hundreds or even thousands of years. The fact that they drilled water wells, capped them and are revisiting them for testing/draining, is exciting to me. It tells me they are beyond debating whether to buy but are preparing for construction. Of course, construction is more than a year off, but this seems to be the kind of prep work you do in advance of constructing a big building.

Sorry couldn't resist.

This must be very nerve racking for the employees.  Hopefully, for their sake, there will be an announcement soon.

If I were an employee, I wouldn't be concerned at all. The CEO just built a multi-million dollar mansion on the cliffs above Lake Erie.

Looks like it, hence the coolers.  The samples need to be sent out to the lab in coolers.

Although I don’t work in commercial construction (heavy highway/public infrastructure here), soil sampling is necessary to design the foundations for these structures.

If it’s a shallow foundation (i.e. pad) you’ll know what the allowable bearing is for that location. For deep foundations (i.e. piles) you’ll get an idea of the depth of bedrock, what type of deep foundation will be needed, and how deep/how many there will be.

There is always some unknown with geology, but you need to know all this before you start construction because it decreases risk and makes cost estimates more accurate.

Edit: an example of the results

I assume there was no soil/groundwater sampling done for the AmeriTrust tower that was planned for that site.

We need to keep an eye out for surveyors.

Sounds interesting although you need a subscription to read the story.
