^ yea me too. but if you look at the current square there is no such corridor so in order to achieve that, they would have to tear out some building. So maybe the market is going to be indoors.

There is currently a corridor between the square and 6th.

This was my understanding of the project as well. There was that corridor there previously that had connected Fountain Square to 6th St. I wouldnt imagine that this corridor would disappear. It also seems like the only area where they could fit any kind of market in accordance to the plan.

Well then you should move back to the Nati!!!

 • 3 weeks later...

does anyone else get the feeling that somehow this project won't get finished by August? Last time I checked (last weekend) the no construction had started but it was still torn up and completely empty. With only 5 months the whole square with trees, fountain and all will have to be put in. The new restaurant also has to be built and any changes the businesses will have to make the the spaces surrounding the square. Getting all of this done in 5 months seems virtually impossible. Also, when will the tenants be announced?

i dont know that anyone ever said that tennants would be signed and that it would be completely finished by then...but i gurantee the square itself will be open.

I did get an inside scoop that Joseph Beth will not be in the mix because the space they wanted is already taken. Unfortunate.

Like I told Colday ... I think this is a little different. There is a major event (Oktoberfest) that will draw over half a million people to that area and it is in September. I would bet that this is a major "push" for completion.

My office overlooks the square. From what I can tell they are working rapidly to upgrade the garage. There's a different subcontractor around almost every day. There are regularly at least 50 workers on site. If they stay focused, I believe they can get the square itself and the Fifth St. and Vine. St. sidewalks in place in time for Oktoberfest.

My office overlooks the square.

you a lucky dog

^ I was thinking the same thing!

In my experiences with Megen Construction, they have proven to be a very competent contractor, timely and thorough. Politically they were a good choice too because they are a black owned firm. If it can physically be done in time, they will get it done.

Fountain Sq. manager named

THE ENQUIRER

The team behind the ongoing $42 million renovation of Fountain Square is this afternoon expected to announce Bill Donabedian to the new position of managing director of the square.

Donabedian, who co-founded Cincinnati's independent MidPoint Music Festival, will be charged with programming the Square year-round and making it "a destination for all Cincinnatians," according to a release from project manager Cincinnati Center City Development Corp.

Besides 3CDC head Steve Leeper, the announcment at 3 P.M. today will be attended by Mayor Mark Mallory, Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell, Procter & Gamble executive and Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber chairwoman Charlotte Otto and local funk legend Bootsy Collins.

The complete overhaul of Fountain Square began in September, and is expected to continue through August. The development is expected to spur further private investment in the immediate area and drive traffic for downtown businesses.

This is great news!

This does sound like a good choice for the square promoter. Well done 3CDC.

Here's a bit more info on the hire from the Post

One thing's for certain about the construction site that is Fountain Square: When it's open, it will have loads of entertainment.

Bill Donabedian, co-founder of the popular and critically acclaimed Midpoint Music Festival that showcases local and national musical acts every fall around downtown Cincinnati, has been named the first managing director of the Fountain Square Management LLC. This new company was formed solely to program entertainment on the square after it reopens later this year.

DOWNTOWN - Concerts, mimes and even tai chi classes could be part of the programming at the new Fountain Square if Bill Donabedian has his way.

Donabedian fills the new position of Fountain Square managing director. His hiring was announced Friday by the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp., which is managing the year-long, $42 million renovation of the Cincinnati landmark. His salary and other terms of employment were not disclosed.

I am definately not down with mimes :x

Yeah, mimes and jugglers seem a bit tacky. Especially when, according to the renderings, the square is going for an urbane and posh feel.

If nothing else, I think they hired the right guy...

Rock Bottom to close for remodeling

Cincinnati Business Courier - 10:45 AM EST Wednesday

While Fountain Square is closed for an overhaul, the brewpub on the square will carry out a redo of its own.

Rock Bottom Brewery said it will close at 8 p.m. April 15 for about two weeks. During that time, the restaurant will get a new interior, a state-of-the-art audio/visual system and new menu items. A grand reopening will be held at the end of April.

^ this is kind of good news. If they are undergoing an extensive renovation, then they must have plans to stay open there. :)

Yeah this is great. Rock Bottom was initially unsure about the remodeling of Fountain Square and thought that it might hurt their business. Since then they have extended their lease and now announced plans to remodeled as well. It is perfect timing and yet another example of the fine work that the 3CDC is spurring around Fountain Square.

Unsure, my ass. They were fishing for $$$ from the city.

Great news!

I hope the menu improves. I have always found their food lacking.

I agree with Cincy-Rise. I like Cincy-Rise's new cynical outlook and logo.

Yea, he was way too positive there for awhile.

When does Graeters open? I need some ice cream.

Yeah, fucking positivity! That isn't the Cynicinnati way!

Cincy-Rise better not be dropping off the "positive" bandwagon, I can't be all alone in that department ;)

^I'll be postive too if that helps... ;)

Meenwhile, back at the ranch...

I walked past the project this afternoon and saw they are done repaveing the part of 5th street in front of the Westen. It looks like the street could re-open in the next few days.

^ It's scheduled to reopen on Sunday.

Square renovation brings in new dining

BY MARLA MATZER ROSE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

With five months to go until the expected re-opening of downtown's Fountain Square as a revitalized destination for shopping and dining, two more announcements have been made regarding restaurants surrounding the Square.

The Westin hotel said it will open Ingredients, a new 118-seat casual restaurant, in its long-vacant ground-floor atrium space. Meanwhile, Rock Bottom Brewery said it plans to close for two weeks beginning late afternoon April 15 for extensive renovations to its nearly 10-year-old location.

It would be great to see the Westin Atrium and lower lobby area return to its former glory.

Another nice step would be to move the Fedex/Kinkos site (and whatever is now above it), and make it a two level Joseph-Beth (similar to the Davis-Kidd location they just opened in Nashville).

usually in the top five to seven restaurants chain-wide," Salupo said.

Buried in the article of course... While many of us are not surprised, that is nice to read.

Joseph-Beth is a Cincinnati based company, you would think they would have a showcase store on the square and I would expect the same with Graeters!

I think 3CDC should hire the Westin's leasing agent. They managed to draw two restaurants while 3CDC has nothing.

>It would be great to see the Westin Atrium and lower lobby area return to its former glory

Yeah, as the set of the Jerry Springer Show!

Pat Berry tried a TV talk show in the atrium back in the 80's I think. It lasted about 15 minutes, but that is the largest most sterile enclosed public space in town, probably in Ohio.

Either that or Pat Berry sucked. I used to see that guy hitting the Main St. bars, he thought he was King Sh*t and God's gift to women, never saw him get one though.

Small note:

Rock Bottom moves temporary shutdown date

Cincinnati Business Courier - 11:19 AM EDT Monday

Rock Bottom Brewery said it will now close May 1 for several weeks of renovation, not in mid-April as previously announced.

The brewpub, located on Fountain Square, said it will renovate its interior, revamp its menu and add a new audiovisual system, while the square is undergoing a major renovation.

Rock Bottom plans to reopen in late May, and will keep all of its 60 employees on its payroll in the interim. The Fountain Square project will be completed in late summer.

I spoke with a server from Rock Bottom the other day and she told me that the restaurant will have a new modern look (lot's of brushed aluminum).

how about the new Jos. A Bank Store opening up in a few weeks later this spring on Fountain Square. Actually it is in the 525 Vine building. Another positive step for the Fountain square area

As in Jos. A. Bank clothing store?

^Yes. The new 525 Vine lobby is open, and the first-floor retail space is ready for build out. Jos. A Bank should be moving in soon.

Hunt Club, Brooks Brothers, Jos A Bank... bah! We need more diversity when it comes to clothing stores. When I first saw Brutus' comment I thought he wrote that Joseph Beth was moving in but my eyes were playing tricks on me :(

I wish Jos A Bank the best though.

I am all for any retailers that move downtown! Especially Joseph A. Banks. This is a great store; it is upscale and has some reasonable items as well. I shop at the location in Kenwood every now and then, and I will probably do some more shopping there once they open up downtown!

Why is the bottom so different from the rest of the place. None of it matches which seems to be a theme for architecture in this city lately.

Surprise ... surprise ... blow the trumpets throughout the land ... SSSCincy is not satisfied with something in Cincinnati!
