October 7, 200717 yr Did you travel the entire length of the West Side Highway when it is an at-grade facility? It is a model for similar conversion projects -- limited access (e.g. only at major streets), pedestrian crossings and barriers (to prevent midblockers), bike paths, extensive landscaping, etc. MUCH better than the ancient crap that was there before. As for the tower deconstruction, isn't it the largest deconstruction project of its kind in the world? I always wondered how projects of its scape would be conducted if the need arose (e.g. if the Empire State Building had to be torn down)...
October 7, 200717 yr actually seicer, today i walked down there on hudson street. but to answer you question yes i have been on the wsh in years past -- ie., before the hudson river park project & further back when it was an elevated mess. if you want you can take a look here for some info about that: http://www.hudsonriverpark.org/development/index.htm as for the db building i haven't heard about that, but i'd imagine its gotta be if not the biggest one of the biggest deconstructions. the big holdup is handling the asbestos. of course you know we had two more firefighter deaths after a recent fire in there.
October 10, 200717 yr Thanks for the photo progress report. The rebuilding of the WTC site has fallen off the national news front-burner. It's good to see the progress being made there. The upward view of the WTC7 building is quite interesting. I admire the minimalist qualities of the overall design, however I was surprised to see how much the curtain wall "disappears" into the background. I'd be a little concerned about this lack of visual presence - especially in regard to the very minimal design proposed for one of the future WTC towers. Still, some people like this look. Also, thanks for the photo of the WTC Globe in Battery Park. That surviving sculpture from the original WTC is probably a better memorial to those lost on Sept. 11 then anything the best architects and planners could devise.
October 12, 200717 yr Great photos and thanks for catching all the angles of the site. For anyone interested in the deconstruction of the DB building. There's been a thread up for awhile on SSP which shows the progress as well as some intense interior coverage photos. First page shows the gored center of the building after the WTC collapse. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=115034
October 12, 200717 yr I take it the interior stairwells are unaccessible due to the asbestos, mold, etc? That's one wicked staircase for use in emergencies.
October 12, 200717 yr i agree it appears that way re accessibility, but i dk! this was the key issue as to the recent deaths of two firefighters and is still being debated. there was supposed to be a plan for that during deconstruction, but it wasn't followed. for one thing the water pressure was turned off up there and they could not get out, not good during a fire.
October 12, 200717 yr I wish they would get on with this. Either rebuild or get off the damn pot! I don't really see why we need to rebuild anyway. make it a park.
