Air polluter to pay $4.6 billion

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - One of the nation's largest power generators has agreed to end a years-long federal lawsuit by paying $4.6 billion to reduce pollution that has eaten away at Northeast mountain ranges and national landmarks, The Associated Press has learned.

The settlement requires American Electric Power, based in Columbus, Ohio, to reduce chemical emissions that cause acid rain by at least 69 percent over the next decade...

Im sure AEP's irresponsible actions are motivated by cost efficiency. Citizens reward energy companies who do this by using more of their product because it's cheaper. Thus, this bullsh!t happens and the market fails. Citizens continue to pay to clean up their mess (literally) and executives will probably continue to get richer.

I'm happy to see the punishment, but the damage has been done. My family has a place in the Adirondacks, and I have seen first hand the problems from acid rain. There are no more birch or beech trees, and the fresh water lakes' acidity levels have changed so that many can't support certain types of fish anymore (trout, bass, etc.). Now its' become obvious that the hemlock trees (which represent the majority of the pine trees in the region) are starting to develop some blight as well.

It's very disheartening to say the least.
