How does this typology turn up randomly in the middle of Appalachia Ohio???   :wtf: :wtf:

I've been wanting to get to Shawnee since Preservation Ohio listed its downtown as one of Ohio's Most Endangered Sites 2007. I'll certainly be back.

Text from the listing by Preservation Ohio, www.preservationohio.org .

It’s a gem in the Little Cities of Black Diamonds area of Ohio.

The Shawnee Main Street Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The overhanging second-story porches of the period buildings reflect the architecture of the 1870s to the early part of the 20th century.  The buildings’ original uses included two opera houses, a hotel, drug store, bank, several fraternal lodges, two company store buildings, a photographer, an ice plant, and several bars and ice cream confectionaries.

Some of Shawnee’s downtown buildings are owned by a non-profit organization and are currently mothballed; others are owned by a local furniture store and used as storage.  All of these buildings are minimally maintained, but have not gone through any restoration process.  Some are owned by private citizens and are in immediate danger of loss – with several nearing the point where salvage will be impossible.

Key buildings in downtown Shawnee are seeing groups form to try and stop the decay.  The Tecumseh Theatre Building, for instance, has received a Save America’s Treasures grant and awaits restoration.  The theater is actually the tallest building in Perry County.

Funding from any source is needed to stave off the disappearance of downtown Shawnee.  It is an Ohio historic resource clearly meriting preservation, and the time to do so is now.  There won't be another chance.

Where is this town in relation to Chillicothe?? I want to visit Chillicothe again and I'd absolutly LOVE to see this place!!!

^Chillicothe is just about an hour to the west. I was actually staying in Chillicothe when I visited Shawnee last month.

So basically you would take US-50 right?? I guess I could google it.. lol  I went to Recording Workshop in Chillicothe last year and I fell in love that part of Ohio so I am itching to get back there and visit..

If you really wanted to, you could take US 50 to Rt 93 which runs right to Shawnee, but there is a better way.

Get down to Gallipolis and Pomeroy. They'll blow you away.

Gallopolis was AMAZING even from what I saw in one night.. I went to a concert and one of my instructors was doing the sound so I went to help and yes I absolutley love that place... That's another place I want to re-visit. BADLY lol...  I actually did just google the route and since I am coming from central PA I would take I-70 to Zanesville and then take 93 down to Shawnee and then head to Chillicothe and Gallopolis..

its about 7 hours to chillicothe from here :-(

Shawnee is one of my favorites!

Based on the pictures I would have never guessed this town was in the buckeye state.

Way to go, Ink!

There's nothing like those Shawnee balconies.  It really tugs at the heart, though, as there is so much to do there, and local assets are so limited.

If it were not so remote, I think Shawnee would be perfect for some sort of attraction...something like a Roescoe Village, maybe.

Wow! I had no idea Shawnee was in this bad of shape! I'll have to check it out one day.

Gallopolis is a beautiful city, and has many nice gems. French-architecture inspired. Pomeroy is nice, but I remember it most vividly after the last big flood :( The courthouse is very nice there.

Well at least it looks as if the town had one other visitor that day!

Ha! What do you know...preservationrestoration is the one who spots ColDay.

That is Evergrey's photo. I cropped it down and threw it in to see if anyone would catch it. Not even ColDay himself noticed!

I was through Shawnee in 1992.  That place was totally dead.  I seem to remember some abandonned kilns.  The whole town was kinda on the side of a hill as I recall.  The land in that area is not good for farming, and industry that was there is gone.

Oh, I noticed.  That doesn't mean ColDay has to say something about it.

Neat-O.  I need to go check that out.

Wow!

Looks like the sister city to Rivage.

Ditto.  It would be a shame to see such a place waste away.  And if it had been a guess the city, I would never have thought of Ohio.

btw, doesn't ColDay already have an ice box?
