Posted October 19, 200717 yr Welcome to Venice, an eclectic neighborhood of Los Angeles, South of Santa Monica and North of Marina Del Rey. Venice was designed by Abbott Kinney to resemble it's namesake in Italy. Enjoy!
October 19, 200717 yr some of the homes leading to the beach are interesting, I wouldn't want to live in one that lined the walkway to the beach though. The traffic and parking over there is hell. Also, the area has a little "scent" to it.
October 19, 200717 yr That looks nothing like Italy, so take that, Abbot Kinney. But whatever, it is nice. I'd been to the beach before, but had no idea about the community off the beach. Some great modern townhouses.

Some great modern townhouses. I saw a documentary about this area on TV not too long ago. I think they said there were originally many more canals. They were filled in in the name of progress. (not that more canals would necessarily make the Venice in California look any more like Venice, Italy.

I thought X was an architect or urban designer.
October 19, 200717 yr Went to school for urban design. Worked as a neighborhood planner and project manager. Not doing it currently. But does he really think this looks like Venice?(or was that a rhetorical device you were using?) Sure, there are canals with little arched bridges but otherwise he's crazy.

I don't think he was trying to recreate Venice, per se, but he was inspired by it.
October 20, 200717 yr So is it true that Venice is trying to restore a few of the canals that had been turned into storm drains years ago?
