Posted October 19, 200717 yr I came across the website forum at http://www.city-data.com/forum/cincinnati/ and noticed a lot of negativity about Cincinnati from the people on that forum. Some of the comments are incorrect. I think we (downtown Cincinnati ambassadors) should join that forum and start shedding positive light on Cincinnati.
October 19, 200717 yr Activity level on that forum is really active as well and it seems a lot of people who are thinking of moving here post up questions about Cincinnati before they move here.
October 19, 200717 yr Ah, haven't been on that site for a while, but it's not a Cincinnati thing; most of the posters over there seem to be very urbanphobic. Makes you wonder if this is the prevalent thinking of non-city dwellers. Based on some of the suburban reaction to the streetcar proposal, it, unfortuately, may be so.

Look at Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis, Atlanta's, etc. comments and tell me the pattern you see ... All of these city's suck, right ...
October 19, 200717 yr Yes, it's very suburban oriented over there. But I actually agree that it makes some sense for those of us with positive attitudes about the cities we live in to do a little "missionary work" over there instead of preaching to the choir here.
October 20, 200717 yr Ah, haven't been on that site for a while, but it's not a Cincinnati thing; most of the posters over there seem to be very urbanphobic. Makes you wonder if this is the prevalent thinking of non-city dwellers. Based on some of the suburban reaction to the streetcar proposal, it, unfortunately, may be so. I can tell you that in my experience, non-urban dwellers mostly think that way. A couple weeks ago I overheard a person from the 'burbs talking about downtown Cincinnati to someone in Rochester, NY. He said that there was no reason to go downtown. I also assume that he hasn't been there in 20 years. When we tell other people we know that we live downtown, they say, "ohh that's nice..." the same way they tell a 1st grade choir recital they did a good job. However, the easiest way to know most people feel that way is that the suburban cornfield developments are selling and growing.
October 20, 200717 yr I've seen people on that forum be negative about Middletown...and Middletown isn't that bad. I post there quite a bit, actually, as it is, as you all notice, pretty suburban and I am a suburbanite. The people who post there look for recommendations and I give that. They usually are NOT interested in city living, so I give them recommendations on suburbs. The problem with that site is that a lot of people who post there boost their own suburb or end of town as they are looking out for their own property values (or are realtors), so there is actually a bit of bias in even the suburban recommendations. I've seen this in the Dayton area postings on that site, though its getting better (more nuanced). However, the bottom line for people is their kids. They are looking for safe neighborhoods/suburbs and safe and good schools. With that as a limiting criterea I can't recommend places I know have poor schools, without saying that they need to consider private schools if they want city living, or even suburban living if the suburb has poor schools.

All of these city's suck, right ... well yeah... with of course the exception of Columbus...they have a Cheesecake Factory.
October 21, 200717 yr City-Data is a Cheesecake-Factory-oriented forum inhabited exclusively by morons.
October 21, 200717 yr well yeah... with of course the exception of Columbus...they have a Cheesecake Factory. As does Cincinnati
October 21, 200717 yr no the place name kenwood has our cheescake factory, I guess that is sycamore township
October 26, 200717 yr no the place name kenwood has our cheescake factory, I guess that is sycamore township It's either Sycamore Twp. or Blue Ash...I think it's Blue Ash, but as Lanskeith17 said it's all Cincinnati. Lets not split hairs.
October 26, 200717 yr Can we get a confirmation on that? I have always thought Kenwood was Sycamore Twp. Regardless, Easton is an urban enviroment in itself (not to compliment it), while Kenwood is just a mall with a streetscape slapped on one side.

I mean, you hit the city limit sign on I71 and then next thing you know, you're exiting exit 12 and are at KTC.
October 27, 200717 yr If Chicago is getting "bad reviews", then any other midwestern city will. ... lol ... From someone at City-Data.com: I'll say my issues with Chitown after spending four years of my 20's living in the burbs for two years (Schaumburg area) and city for two (Wicker Park). 1. Tax hell...Property tax, sales tax at 10 plus %, name a tax or fee and Chicago has it on the books. 2. Parking hell...Just to own a car, but a sticker for the city. That will cost you. Park on an expired meter or when street cleaning goes on, there goes 50 bucks. 3. Political corruption...lets face it, Chicago is known for corruption for several generations. The problem is, it is accepted. I put Chicago next to New Orleans as the most corrupt city in the country. And look what happened to NO's response to Katrina (not saying Fed Govt could've done more), but I hope you see my point here. 4. Police corruption...it's real and yes, too often slow to respond. 5. Crime...I lived there when it was the homicide capital of the US. 6. Meantime its got the strictest gun laws in the country next to DC. My personal belief is people should have the right to defend themselves and that may include use of a handgun. 7. Cubs....Honestly I go both ways on this one. I do believe people go see Cubs games because its the cool thing to do. Ask 90 percent of these bleached blondes at Wrigley to name five players on the roster and they probably couldn't. The Cubs sucked for decades. I do applaud fans for sticking by the "loveable losers" all this time. However, the very financial support given by the fans I believe was a financial disincentive for the team to really go anywhere. 8. Traffic...2nd worst in the country, nuff said. 9. Health problems...voted the number one fattest city in America last year. 10. Racial seperation....been called the most segregated city in the US. not sure, who knows. 11. Chicago landlords... infamous for being jerks.I had to take my former landlord just to get my deposit. 12. Weather..combination of being midwest and lake effect makes for brutal winters. 13. Bad economy...I don't care how many cafes and boutiques are opening. Chicago has a poor economy for an urban area it's size. 14. Someone once told me every a--hole in the midwest moves to Chicago. It's true. 15. It's philosophy of maternalism in govt. Ban smoking, ban cell phone use in cars, ban, ban, ban... 16. The glamourization of criminals. Al Capone is not someone who should be romanticized!! 17. Emos. For some reason a 130 lb man in girls jeans, with whispy bangs, wearing a vintage t-shirt annoys the hell out of me. Those are the top reasons that come to mind. To be fair there a number of great things about Chicago but that is not the subject of this thread, so I didn't list them....I now live in WI and can honestly say that I would not mind if I never stepped foot in the city of Chicago again. [+] Rate this post positively For crying out loud ...
October 28, 200717 yr I like to check out the citydata forum every once in a while. There is a lot of 17 year old hometown boosterism, but there is an amazing variety of people who post there. And for some reason, Jeffrey does not know how to spell his name over there ...
