So I was wondering where a good place to go for a good hike would be in the Cincy area?  I know Miami Whitewater Forest has some great trails but I was wondering if anywhere else is desirable?  Anywhere within an hor drive would be OK.  Any info?

Sharon Woods has some great trails.  They've got hills, a big lake, waterfalls, lots of trees, and more.  There's also some good walks in Glenwood Gardens, Eden Park, and Mt. Airy Forest.

A little further away, but here are my recommendations --

Shawnee State Forest is ~1.5 hours to the east near Portsmouth and has great hiking trails. Nothing too spectacular, but you can access the Ohio River on their marina.

Clifty Falls State Park in Madison, IN is ~1 hour southwest and has great trails and outstanding views of waterfalls ... when it rains a lot or is in the springtime.

I'm a big fan of Shawnee State Park - and actually, there's a relatively spectacular view up near the fire tower north of the lodge and such.  Especially with the fall foliage coming in, that'd make a beautiful hike - through a yellow wood, then a nice healthy climb, and then the overlook...

...digging around for pictures...

...yeah, these were taken February, 2002:

...ach, if only the fire tower nearby were open:

...you'd be able to see damn near to Mount Logan...

Pick up Walking the Steps of Cincinnati and explore.

Or Mt Airy Forest.

Houston Woods has some trails - "Big Woods Trail" goes through an old growth forest.

It's not really hiking (more walking), but Glenwood Gardens is very nice.

Pick up Walking the Steps of Cincinnati and explore.
Don't go on Walk #16 though or you'll be in for a big disapointment.  Some clowncil members closed one of my favorite walks in that book.

thanks for the info.

i think im gonna go do clifty falls around madison.  looks pretty cool.  im in the mood for a good hike and i think the time of the year is right.  anyone else been to clifty falls?

You might not find all that much water flow right now, but its a splendid hike.

its been raining a lot around here.  i bet theres some good water flow.  no?

If you go this Saturday, you will probably see a healthy flow.

hehe, healthy flow.  yea, thats when I am going.

*There is a sweet state park in Madison, Indiana called Clifty Falls. Its not too far away, maybe an hour or an hour and a half (I forget). There are all kinds of trails and natural waterfalls and creeks. Its awesome!!

*Miami Whitewater has some good trails

*Shawnee Lookout on River Road has some great trails with excellent views and good examples of mounds.

*Im a big fan of Withrow Nature Preserve. Its usually empty and very beautiful to walk through.

Unfortunately, Fort Ancient near Oregonia closes for the year at the end of the month, but the trails are great. The biggest drawback is the admission charge, it's part of the Ohio Historical Society.

Are John Bryan/Clifton Gorge within an hour?

Oh, and we shouldn't forget the Buckeye Trail!

Anyone up for a short jaunt up to Painsville?  We can return via Defiance!

Shawnee Lookout is offering two programs with a historical bent on Saturday, March 21.

“A Long Walk Through History” will include three different hikes, during which participants will learn some of the prehistoric and historic details about the area. The first walk will begin at Miami Fort Trail at 10 a.m.; the second, at Blue Jacket Trail at 11:30 a.m.; and the third, at Little Turtle Trail at 12:30 p.m.
