Posted October 22, 200717 yr Or software development in general. I just ran across this company called Hi-Rez Studios. It's based out of Alpharetta, GA, an Atlanta suburb. It was started in 2005. Their first title to be released is going to be called Global Agenda. They are now licensed to use the Unreal Engine 3. The license alone cost 750k. My question is why can't Ohio get more investments in software development? Ohio has a alot of R/D but not in software. Keep in mind it's been 2 years and that game Global Agenda has not been released yet. So they are living off the investments until this game is stating to bring in revenue. I know Ohio has the power to do such investment but i don't see it happening.
October 24, 200717 yr Are there any good video game development programs at Ohio universities? Here in Pittsburgh we have developed a significant homegrown video game cluster due to excellence in the field at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University. Now a major British video game developer that has had 6 titles selling over 1 million copies is looking at us for a North American HQ (in the running with Quebec). Video game development jobs pay quite well (>$75k/year). If there are any universities in Ohio that have top-notch software and/or "electronic arts" (video game development is both technology and art), then the state should create some incentivies to grow and attract firms in the vicinity. If there really isn't any notable video game development programs... then I don't see how Ohio would become a significant center of innovation in the field.
October 24, 200717 yr I recall there being one in the Cleveland area but I don't remember where. If you're interested in it, I'm surprised you didn't just look it up. Unless of course you saw this as another opportunity to pimp the 'Burgh. :-P "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 24, 200717 yr Doesn't anyone know how to use a search engine!? Done a quick google & there are tons of software development companies throughout Ohio. They are "A Dime A Dozen" these days.

I cant remember who it was that responded to one of my posts about Pittsburgh having an advantage in that Carnegie Mellon has the best computer science and engineering programs in the country. Someone said there was a lot of missed opportunity due to politics or something. If someone has time I'd like to know more about that.

I know there are some firms doing software development for industrial machines. but these companies tend to be very small. I would have to agree with evergrey about the programs in universities. Atlanta has a slue of programs and universities that are gear toward it. http://www.hirezstudios.com/gaming_in_georgia.html

October 24, 200717 yr A spring semester class - basically a video gaming competition is held every year in conjunction with Electronic Arts who does the judging, could buy the rights to the game (they have before) - but that's about all I know about it....not an expert in the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Department....
