December 6, 201113 yr Believe it or not, restaurant owners in the WHD have opposed infill on parking lots because of the fear in losing the customers. The vast anti-density conspiracy strikes again! I'm telling you, it's real and it's the #1 problem in this town. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26612.0.html I would have said the collapse of heavy manufacturing.
December 6, 201113 yr ^Well, I think you're being a little hard there. If a restaurant is in danger of going out of business should its parking lot no longer be accessible, then I don't object to its maintaining the lot. Foot traffic is probably not enough for some of these places, especially on weekends when the city is vastly more pedestrian-free, and suburbanites probably don't want to go through the hassle of a long bus or train ride just for a restaurant, not when they have other options. Its just the restaurants dealing with economic realities.
December 6, 201113 yr ^Those WHD lots are never full on the weekends unless there's a Brown's game. I think the restaurant owners are being a little paranoid here.
December 6, 201113 yr One well placed parking garage solves this problem (preferably as the base of a mid sized tower!) Regarding the transit center, I had some reservations initially, and was concerned about how the level of buses might negatively effect the WHD. Looking at that location, however, I'm feeling pretty good. That's far enough south that it's not going to have a deleterious effect on folks eating / enjoying the WHD. Still not sure what the main point of it is, but I'll leave that to the public transportation wonks to debate.
December 6, 201113 yr Other high density cities with few (if any) surface lots have been able to find a way to provide ample parking for their patrons. How'd they do it? It ain't rocket science kids!
December 6, 201113 yr Why stop at the restaurants? We should tear down the skyscrapers for more parking, too.
December 6, 201113 yr What is there to a city besides parking? Cleveland nearly has Disney World beat... Now we're trying to ruin that!
December 6, 201113 yr That's a good point, Bobcats. It would be ideal if Cleveland were a 72 square mile surface lot. Maybe we could get tourists from around the country to drive to our fair city with the promise of their very own free parking spot.
December 7, 201113 yr I accept that parking is a valid issue. It can be a problem in certain areas. But this isn't one of them... downtown has more than its share, especially during dinner hours. AJ93 brings up a good point, a new garage would compensate nicely if we lost a block of surface lots. The City of Warren built a municipal parking deck several years ago. If Warren can do it, we can too.
December 7, 201113 yr Regarding the transit center, I had some reservations initially, and was concerned about how Still not sure what the main point of it is, but I'll leave that to the public transportation wonks to debate. Although the West Side Transit Center idea has been around for 20 years, this latest incarnation was brought forward not by RTA to serve a transit purpose, but by Forest City Enterprises via two community development corporations to serve a development goal. That is to subsidize construction of a foundation and parking structure for a residential tower. But in the past, the purpose of the WSTC was to serve as a mirror to the East Side Transit Center (since named the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center). As buses from the east, southeast and some south-side buses pass through downtown, they would turn back east at the WSTC. December 7, 201113 yr i was wondering if RTA could buy the design Stark envisioned for this property with slight modifications. The plan looks similar. Beautiful Architecture I hope they pick this!!!
December 9, 201113 yr Cant get into details now, but a certain w9th restaurant will be closing soon and re opening as a bar/lounge/nightclub marketed at downtown residents.
December 9, 201113 yr Cant get into details now, but a certain w9th restaurant will be closing soon and re opening as a bar/lounge/nightclub marketed at downtown residents. My guess would be Mallorca? The only other restaurants are the 3 that have opened within the last 6 months or so (6th city diner, El Guera, the thai place) and Brasa (but I'm probably forgetting 1 or 2).

My guess is the Mediterranean place next to Mallorca in the old Sunset Lounge space. Can't remember the name right now, but I've never seen them busy.
December 10, 201113 yr Zdara, and frankly, knowing what I know about the owner I'm surprised he didn't go with a nightclub/lounge style place to start. I'm expecting something View/Lust/Moda/Spy Bar-ish.

I would probably open it Cleveland's Warehouse district, just to keep this thread on topic

January 25, 201213 yr Zdara is now offically closed. Sign says "closed for kitchen renovation" but it will not be re-opening as Zdara. The liquor store on W10th has closed and moved to W6th in the old Jacks location. They will be open Mon-thrus till 10pm, Fri and Sat till 3am. They will be serving liquor everyday till 10pm, wine and beer till 1am (or whatever legal time is) and small snacks with an attached small kitchen that will do carry out. Ive been in the new store, while it is open for business, the owner is still putting the finishing touches on it. But from what Ive seen so far it is by FAR the nicest liquor store Ive ever been in. They kept the marble bar top from Jacks and use it as their counter top. The place is filled with dark rich wood cabinets and shelves. They are carrying a huge selection of liquor and they have all the high end stuff too! I hear there will be a big chandelier as the centerpiece to the place. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished place. When I heard the liquor store was moving on w6th I wasn't to excited, I figured it would be about the quality of a Giant Eagles Liquor store at best. But they blew that out of the water, I for one am really impressed.
January 27, 201213 yr Thanks for the update. I was skeptical of the liquor store as well, but I'd go to the one on West 10th to get my supplies. With that moving to West 6th and looking "upscale" as you describe it, shouldn't be so bad. You're saying it's better than the "Gateway Food Mart" on West 25th, right? :)
January 28, 201213 yr The food will be Barocca's 2nd location. First one is in Lakewood and is really good!!
February 7, 201213 yr Any updates on Tomo on West 9th? Last I heard, Joe Cimperman was holding up their liquor license for fear it would become another rowdy bar/club. Seems like like put a lot of money into it to be held up by something like this.
March 9, 201213 yr El Guero officially opened yesterday on West 9th in the space Phoenix Coffee previously occupied. I think it will be a major success with the lack of similarly themed spots nearby. Hope its delicious!
March 9, 201213 yr Welcome, jmills109! Keep on postin'! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I asked Cimperman via Twitter what the holdup was and he stated that the liquor license issue had been cleared up and that he wasn't sure what the delay was at this point.
March 9, 201213 yr I posted in the restaurants thread about El Guero. It's decent...It's a sweeter take which is nice...but if you're used to Chipotle portions prepare to be disappointed. It's a really nice space and glad it's in the neighborhood.
March 12, 201213 yr ^I agree with that assessment. I found the food to be a little bland, but they're brand new to the game as far as I can tell so I'll give them a few months to work it out.
March 12, 201213 yr What about Barroco. I know its not so much burritos, but I havent heard much about it (except for how good Lakewood was before WHD). Didnt it open on W. 6th by now?
March 13, 201213 yr It still is not opened yet. I just peaked in there today on my way to Taza and they still have a ways to go.
March 13, 201213 yr ^I agree with that assessment. I found the food to be a little bland, but they're brand new to the game as far as I can tell so I'll give them a few months to work it out. I had it as well, and it was not as flavorful as I was expecting. Not bad in any way, and I do tend to like my food a bit spicy, but I feel that the meat could use some more seasoning. Otherwise the place looks really nice. And I don;t think the portions are that much different than Chipotle.
March 13, 201213 yr They were a little skimpy on opening night, but they listen to their customers. My second trip was a lot better! And they're open until 3am on weekends!!! I wish whatever is holding Tomo up would get taken care of...I'm craving some Hibachi!!
March 13, 201213 yr i really need to check this place out....opened until 3am on the weekends....good deal :-)

I wish whatever is holding Tomo up would get taken care of...I'm craving some Hibachi!! I agree. I went on opening day, and again yesterday, and had a much better experience with taste and portion size yesterday. My salad on day 1 had about 5 small pieces of lettuce in a very small container. I think their menu could still use some clarification - ie, does salsa come with an order of chips? It also seems that some of the toppings are missing from the actual menu listing. All in all, based on last night, I'm much more excited about the place.
April 29, 201213 yr EDIT: wait, we already seem to have a specific thread http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23756.new.html But perhaps one of the most exciting developments is the hope of a West Side Transit Center to mirror the East Side’s Stephanie Tubbs Jones Transit Center. RTA’s plan to build atop one of the Warehouse District’s barren surface lots recently was approved by the neighborhood board and will soon seek potential developers with the help of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. The plan calls for 39,500 square feet of ground floor retail, 183,600 square feet of mid- to low-rise housing, a garage for 540 cars, and just 4,800 square feet needed for transit center operations. http://freshwatercleveland.com/features/allaboardtherta041912.aspx
April 30, 201213 yr Thanks. My response, and I hope others too, is posted at..... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23756.msg617037.html#msg617037 "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 9, 201213 yr The Waterstreet Grille/Sixth City Diner is being filled again in WHD with Charkha: exotic Indian cuisine.
May 9, 201213 yr ^ Excellent! we need good Indian downtown. Indigo on Prospect had crazy bad hours, then, closed down, I think.
May 9, 201213 yr Indian is nice, but I liked that Waterstreet/Sixth City catered to WHD residents for breakfast on weekends.
May 9, 201213 yr ^True, they had a decent breakfast. I've noticed some bars are starting to offer Saturday and Sunday brunch. Nauti Mermaid and The Map Room now offer modest weekend brunch options.
July 14, 201212 yr Looks like a vacant storefront on W. 9th has been leased. THe space once known as Style Lounge(?) is now a tattoo place.
July 26, 201212 yr Now if only W. 6th and W. 9th could get re-paved so nicely I would hope that a good repaving for W.6th and W.9th would coincide with the completion of the E&Y tower. Hopefully?!?! :wtf:
July 27, 201212 yr I prefer this kind of "paving" for WHD. There are several cities, even in the U.S., that require surface paving in parking lots or driveways to be cobblestone. That's actually standard almost everywhere in Europe.
