Those that live in Columbus will know that the purchase and renovation of the Bundy Building off Neil Ave. in the Arena District is pretty big news. It's an awesome industrial building with large windows, however most are broken and parts of the structure are literally crumbling. Now that it's in Nationwide's hands, I think we can see some good things come out of it, hopefully a condo conversion.

The developer of the Arena District in Columbus has an agreement to purchase a downtown bakery equipment warehouse, but less specific are plans on how it will redevelop the property.

 

Nationwide Realty Investors has agreed to buy the Russell T. Bundy Associates property at 237 Neil Avenue for an undisclosed sum.  It expects to close on the property's sale July 6.

 

"We thought it was an outstanding site and a natural extension of the development activity in the Arena District," said Brian Ellis, Nationwide Realty's president and chief operating officer.

Arena District restaurants endure lockout aftermath

Conventions, a new crop of office workers and neighborhood residents, special events and promotions are boosting business for Arena District restaurants this summer.  Restaurant managers say they definitely missed the big crowds that more than 40 Blue Jackets games at Nationwide Arena would have brought to their doors after the lockout of players canceled the 2004-05 season.

 

Hockey remains a crucial part of the Arena District's draw, they say, and all are hoping the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association can reach an agreement that would allow the 2005-06 season to be played.  They're ready to weather the storm if hockey doesn't return, but as one manager says, it won't be as much fun.

The puck might have stopped here 18 months ago, but development in the Arena District wasn’t checked.  Fans who haven’t been to the district since the last Columbus Blue Jackets home game on April 2, 2004, will notice the progress. Apartments, offices and retail businesses have opened, and more are under construction.

 

The district named after Nationwide Arena, where the Blue Jackets make their home debut tonight, is poised to grow more as its borders effectively expand. For example, a new stadium for the Columbus Clippers is likely to be built on land west of Neil Avenue. More buildings are in the planning stages, which are expected to lead to more Arena District residences and stores. This could include construction along Nationwide Boulevard on land that now serves as parking just west of the arena.

well kyle guy wake up from your old school thinking -- you cannot market it as pen west anymore if there is no pen to be west of!

 

however, i do wish they would have kept a piece of it up. erasing major notorious prisons smaks of trying to erase history.

 

otherwise, yay arena district --- it's very columbus! who can argue with a free arena and spinoff? also, i think it gets mixed reviews, but i really liked the nearby high street cap stuff when i drove by this summer, i thought it looked great. i hope the new coop baseball park goes up near there too, thats another great idea.

Last I've heard it was still planned for the NW corner of Nationwide & Neil (which would be right at the bottom center of that picture if it extended another two inches). ;)

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. and Columbus have lifted the veil on the insurance giant's plans for a 133,112-square-foot office building in the city's Arena District.  Nationwide plans to house 600 to 700 employees at the site. The company already employs about 7,000 workers downtown.

 

Nationwide Realty Investments, the insurer's real estate development affiliate, has asked the city's Downtown Commission for a conceptual review of the $16.5 million six-story office project proposed for 275 Marconi Blvd. That examination is expected during the zoning panel's Oct. 27 meeting.

 

Meanwhile, the city's Downtown Development Office is preparing legislation to approve spending $400,000 on streetscape projects and other improvements as an incentive for Nationwide to move ahead with the building. Columbus City Council will get its first look at the legislation either Oct. 24 or Nov. 7.

The city incentive package includes construction of a pedestrian crossing over Norfolk Southern rail lines at Marconi Boulevard and Hickory Street. Columbus officials also have pledged to ask the railroad for a quiet zone through the booming Arena District.

 

This pedestrian RR crossing is long overdue.  I cross these tracks on foot at least 3 times/week.  They're covered with heavy gravel, and in the winter, they're covered with ice.  It's far from safe.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Joe Casey remembers a time not long ago when the thought of bar-hopping in the downtown area of this city wasn't even an option.

 

"There was no such thing as going downtown and drinking and eating," he said from behind the bar at O'Shaughnessy's Public House. "You never heard anybody say, 'Hey, let's go downtown and get a beer,' because there was nothing there."

All of the Pittsburgh politicians loved the Arena District and they want something like that in Pittsburgh. I think the odds of getting this arena are pretty high.

Condo buyers take liking to Arena District projects

Three condominium projects in or on the fringe of Columbus' Arena District have experienced robust sales, even as their owners pursue divergent selling strategies.  The developers of Burnham Square, Eclextion Lofts and the Buggyworks have begun closing sales of their residences as construction on the projects enters the final few months.

 

Bill Shelby, president of Spectrum Properties Inc., said the company's 57-unit Eclextion Lofts at 221 N. Front St. has five units unsold, including two penthouses it will begin building soon. "We're pretty strategic about (the marketing,)" Shelby said. "I like to think it's more than just a hot market."

 

I love that the 'Arena District' is thriving....I also love that our capital C-Bus finally got a professional franchise (Bluejackets).  C-Bus should use that lovely arena to its advantage to try to get an NBA team!!!  Really utilize the arena they have....I wish Cincy had an NHL and/or an NBA team.  Good Luck C-Bus!!

Business and political leaders outside Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati began calling themselves "the other Ohio" a decade ago as they argued for more government jobs and money.  Now, as local leaders put together their case for state help with a new minor-league baseball stadium in the Arena District, they’re asking decisionmakers to remember there’s another Columbus, too.

 

Though a huge chunk of Ohio’s biennial capital budget remains in Columbus for state government projects, local leaders say the region also deserves money for its own building and economic-development initiatives.  They’re using the same argument that has been used against them in places such as Toledo, Youngstown and Marietta: "We ought to get our fair share," said Franklin County Commissioner Paula Brooks.

Nationwide to build $50 million condo tower in Arena District

A 20-story, glass condominium tower will punctuate the Columbus skyline next year from an Arena District corner near North Bank Park.

Nationwide Realty Investors announced plans today to spend more than $50 million on the new tower and an adjoining rehabilitation of the former Bundy Building at Spring Street and Neil Avenue.

 

The developers are hopeful that work will begin this spring on the Condominiums at North Bank Park, pending city approval.  The Dispatch Printing Company, publisher of The Dispatch, owns 10 percent of the project.

My primitive math says that at $50 million, they'll need to average $500,000 per unit to break even.  I wouldn't expect to touch one of these for less than $600-800k.

WOW! That tower looks awesome. I just have a few questions for you Columbus people. Is Nationwide realty associated with the insurance company? How will that fit in with the surrounding skyline?

So who is running out today to get site photos and a couple pics of the A&P?

Definitely a snazzy tower - those corner balconies will be an amazing amenity at that location. Congrats Columbus!

As ColDayMan suggested - this will act as the "northern" bookend to the Columbus skyline (whereas Miranova is the southern) if memory serves me correctly.

It should fit pretty well with the skyline.  The closest building would be the AEP building (2 blocks closer to downtown) at about 30-33 stories.

I like the rendering a lot, we definitely need more glass in the skyline. As already mention, this tower will more or less be the northern bookend to the skyline, with Miranova being the southern end. ColDay, the ever-thinking-ahead person that he is, already has a photo of the exact site on urbanohio.com:

The delapidated old warehouse on the right is the Bundy Building, which will be turned into the 21 lofts planned in the project. The vacant lot next to the Bundy Building on Spring St. will be the site of the condo tower.

Not too long ago, history buffs were stumping for the preservation of the old Ohio Penitentiary.

 

Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman wasn’t one of them.

 

The mayor said yesterday that Nationwide Realty Investors’ announcement of a flashy, 20-story condominium tower is further evidence that the Arena District has transformed the former pen site.
