Posted November 2, 200717 yr We've all been missing/thinking of Rob, so I thought I'd finally post my pics of Van Wert from my Ft. Wayne trip. I wouldn't say I wasn't impressed with Van Wert, but I was a little disappointed because Van Wert has the reputation of being one of Ohio's best cities. To that I disagree, but Van Wert is home of one of the state's best courthouses and has an amazing library for a city its size. The namesake of the city was actually spelt 'Van Wart,' but the city ended up being spelt 'Van Wert.' Good call.
November 2, 200717 yr Any place that advertises fried chicken on a sign is a fine city to me! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
November 3, 200717 yr On the outside that library would pass for a Water Works pumping station in Cincinnati, but the inside is really nice, with a lot more light and color than the exterior would suggest.
November 4, 200717 yr nice job on vee dub. a couple other great things about the place are first the wassenberg arts center, which is about the best there is for support of ohio only artists. also, the local teens and everybody else used to have a pretty spectacular muscle car cruise thru downtown regularly every fri or sat night (they may still do that, but i dk). a wassenberg show
November 5, 200717 yr That cladding in the third to last photo is downright scary. As are many others.. What were they thinking! I think there are some fine buildings underneath all the ridiculous "alterations" they did. The court house and library are beautiful though...
November 5, 200717 yr Nice shots. Love, love, love the courthouse! It demands attention. Looks like a very nice little town with some great amenities.
November 7, 200717 yr I think you'd probably find a I wouldn't say I wasn't impressed with Van Wert, but I was a little disappointed because Van Wert has the reputation of being one of Ohio's best cities. To that I disagree, but Van Wert is home of one of the state's best courthouses and has an amazing library for a city its size. I think Bryan would probably be a little more fitting of that reputation than Van Wert would be, but it's still a decent little city. Good tour of the downtown.
November 9, 200717 yr The courthouse is really pretty well-cared-for, and the old main lobby of the Brumback Library has that great vaulted ceiling, arched windows, mosaic floor and a marble fireplace. Again, impeccably maintained, and the expansions have followed the architectural theme of the original. The setting is one of the best for a library that I've seen, too -- expansive and park-like. Balyeat's is darned good. Downtown Van Wert has been hit hard by loss of industries and an invasion by the scourge of American downtowns everywhere, Wal-Mart. The Wassenberg is outstanding, especially for the size of the town. Each year I look forward to seeing the Ohio Watercolor Exhibition there, and a few years ago I managed to get some photos into the fall photography exhibit and brought home an honorable mention on one. I was pretty tickled, for a first-timer.
November 11, 200717 yr What the hell is this garbage? Corner killers! :( what? you dont like it? why not? thats the same style cladding renzo piano used on the 'new' new york times tower! maybe this was his stealth practice project?
September 19, 201014 yr Yikes, I was in Van Wert yesterday afternoon. I didn't see that building, however.
