August 28, 20231 yr We usually went in the back so I always thought everything was at the wrong end. I thought Lazarus was by 270 even in adulthood but then I'd get outside and get reminded that was Sears.

August 28, 20231 yr My understanding was that Sears was originally two stories but the second story was closed at some point? I first visited Sears around 2009 and only one story was accessible. Lazarus and Penney's were already closed by then.
August 28, 20231 yr Sears did the same at Eastland around 1985. Turned it into Discover Card offices.

I remember now that JC Penney did have a second floor but it was not open to the public when I worked there. I also remember taking the elevator up to the second floor when I worked there in the 80's, so it definitely had at least a partial second floor.

September 30, 20231 yr As demolition of Westland Mall reaches halfway point, no plans yet for future of site "The demolition of Westland Mall is about halfway done, but what the future holds for the site has yet to take shape. Ruben said plans still call for all the buildings on the 88-acre mall site along West Broad Street near Interstate 270 in Franklin Township to come down — including the former Sears store, which hosts monthly gun shows. The last gun show there will be Dec. 30-31, said Lisa Spence, office manager for Pembroke, Virginia-based C&E Gun Shows. According to the grant terms, the demolition work has to be done by June 2024. Ruben said it will be finished before that." https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2023/09/30/what-will-replace-westland-mall-owners-not-sure-yet/70981931007/
September 30, 20231 yr The fact that these people have had literally years planning the demolition of this site and yet have zero plans at all for it is why I think it's going to be the worst-case scenario in what it ends up being. Nothing about this inspires any confidence, and it's clear that the owner is the wrong company to do anything transformative with it.

September 30, 20231 yr Both of those things would provide a few jobs, but they wouldn't really change the direction of the area. Westland needs something truly transformative to really push the areas towards serious revitalization. It's just kind of a mess of decaying suburbia, stroads, a bunch of car lots and a casino.

Yeah I agree, I was joking about the warehouses because the developer said they are a possibility at one point.
October 3, 20231 yr ^^ they look a bit on the bland side, like little fortresses. But housing is housing on the West Side.
October 6, 20231 yr Yeah, and that picture of the power line just cutting through the development isn't exactly a selling point either, lol.

November 1, 20231 yr Hyperion's Columbus hydrogen fuel cell plant delayed until at least 2024 "Hyperion, a California fuel-cell company, has delayed plans to move to Columbus and hire up to 700 workers. The company announced in February 2022 that it would invest nearly $300 million to convert the former Columbus Dispatch printing plant on the Far West Side into a facility to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell stacks, which would be used to power a line of products including Hyperion's XP-1 sports car, theoretically capable of traveling 1,000 miles without a charge. A company spokesperson this week said the company remains committed to its Columbus plans but will not open this year, as originally scheduled. “For the last 18 months Hyperion’s Columbus campus has undergone significant renovations and construction," Hyperion Vice President Monique Loustaunau wrote in an email. "During this time, there have been some delivery delays for highly specialized equipment, which is consistent with global supply-chain hurdles for hardware-focused companies. To maintain course, Hyperion has offset some factory activities to strategic partners." Loustaunau said "2024 will see the start of limited-series production to early customers alongside some larger pilot programs for international buyers. Our main activities continue to thrive at our California campus, with a full transition to Ohio slated next year." https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/manufacturing/2023/11/01/whatever-happened-with-the-hyperion-factory-planned-for-the-west-side/71406030007/ Edited November 1, 20231 yr by Luvcbus
