Posted May 9, 200520 yr So Saturday I spent some time in Akron and then went to visit the family. Sunday, I paid a visit to my old stomping grounds of Youngstown. Some things have changed a lot - some for the better, some for the worse. Here's what I saw: Coming across the South Avenue bridge, I snapped a pic of the new convocation center. Not too shabby and it's close enough to downtown that I can see a potential for spinoff development: Over to Federal Plaza which they re-opened to east-west traffic: The Federal Courthouse - small but handsome: My favorite in Youngstown - Metropolitan Tower (224 feet): The ornate entrance to the Stambaugh Building - where I saw two tourists - yes, TOURISTS who were scoping the building. Apparently they were falcon watchers and a pair has set up a nest on the Stambaugh Building - who knew? The SkyBank Building: OH NO!!! IT"S THAT LIBERAL HAGAN!!! NO TO HAGAN!!!! ;-) I have to say that Federal Plaza looks great after being re-opened to traffic. The neo-classical Mahoning County Courthouse: The Stambaugh Building: The Bank One Building If memory serves correctly, this was formerly the HQ for Phar-Mor: Nice detailing on this small building: The Realty Building - proposed for residential conversion (not sure how that's progressed): Swwwweet! A rather ornate 'crown' to this entrance - albeit in need of repair: The newest "high-rise" in Youngstown - built in 1970ish: Parking garages? Blech. Brutalism? Blech! Brutalist parking garages??? BLECH!!! Arguably the most well-known high-rise in Youngstown because it's located on the outskirts of the CBD and the crown is brightly lit at night - the Home Savings and Loan building: The statue of St. Columba at St. Columba Cathedral - seat of the Youngstown diocese: This poor church was literally right across from St. Columba: The county jail to the left, some sort of industrial something in the distance: And back downtown - notice the odd vehicle? It was right out of Mad Max - and I saw quite a few like it that day: I headed to the south side - and sure enough - this wreck hadn't improved: In 2002: And May 2005: Ooo - urban meadow! And the house has been scavenged of its siding for scrap metal: Pregnant and scared? Maybe not pregnant but yep - scared!!! Sorry about the glare on this one - note the porches have completely collapsed: Enough of the south side, up to YSU we go! YSU's 'Old Main': Down the hill from YSU is this new housing development - architecturally it's nothing groundbreaking but nice nonetheless: I headed a little north and managed to find Wick Park - pretty nice! Further north is Fifth Avenue - lots of nice older homes: These are right across from Wick Park: Unfortunately so is this: And this: Stambaugh Auditorium, a popular concert venue anchors the southwest corner of the park: Heading south, the house that Jim Tressel built: Next up - the beauty of Mill Creek Park and the Fellows Riverside Gardens! Now it is occupied by UHAUL. It is an eyesore. I think a paint job needs to be in order. The Home Savings and Loan Building. At right it the former Masters TUX. Plaza which will be demolished for 80 new parking spaces within a year. The first Building is Powers Auditorium. Right to the left of that is the new construction and add-on to it. Then the Voinovich Building with its new Identical Counterpart (2005) The Mahoning County Childrens Services Building The Wick Building to the left and the Metropolitan Tower to the right. Entrance to Youngstown's Newest Building; the Mahoning County Children's Services Building. To the immediate right is the soon to be spot of the new Federal Courthouse. Knocking out those eyesores. Should be done by mid next year. Then Metro Building in the distance. The Stambaugh Building Home to Youngstown Best place downtown, BW3'S! The Reality Building My Favorite. City Center One. New Federal Courthouse The Newest Skyscraper, if you call it that, the very nice Mahoning County Jail. A view of the West End of the Best I-AA Stadium around. TALLEST BUILDING IN YOUNGSTOWN BY EXACTLY ONE FOOT. YSU Stambaugh Stadium The Tallest Building in Youngstown. As you can see the black half circle protruding out is the new Debartlo Club. May 10, 200520 yr Interesting photos. Thank you for the Wick Park photos, MayDay. I really see that as a potential "signature neighborhood". Its certainly the most beautiful neighborhood I've seen in Youngstown.
May 10, 200520 yr The Fifth Avenue shot looks remarkably like Fairmount Boulevard in Cleveland Heights. Great to see cities like Youngstown and Akron in a photo thread, both seem to have some remarkable urban spaces (and a lot of potential in Youngstown). Very enjoyable thread (all three segments).
May 19, 200520 yr I am a GOP. I Hate TAFT. I'd hate Hagan more.. We need 2 quality leaders from each party, not Ted Strickland, to stand up and get this state on track. I hope its a GOP.
June 1, 200520 yr Just had to throw in my 2 cents and add some corrections to the thread... just want to make everyone has the correct info :) The tall red brick building labled as the former HQ of Phar-mor is actually the Wick Building... which houses the core nightclub on the ground floor and many business on all the floors above including a radio station and more! The former HQ of Phar-mor is actually right next door in the former Strouss building now called 20 Federal Place... View from the eleventh floor of the Wick building looking west (Notice the Mahoning County Children's Services building in not yet built) And 20 Federal Place (I hope the signage isn't final... They are covering the Phar-mor Centre signs) YtownNews&Views... In this picture: The Kress Building (in white) will not be demolished for the new courthouse... Supposedly all buildings west of the Kress Building Stopping at and not including the First Educators Building will be demolished... Although one of those buildings got a mysterious plastic wrap around all the windows last week?!? General Updates: New restaurant on N Phelps St called the Old Precinct... I haven't been there yet, but it looks nice... I saw Skeeter's Jazz Bar open and looking busy on one of the weekend nights... And Imbibe (the new martini bar in the old first federal building on W Federal) has electricity and should be opening soon! Pics to come!!!
July 6, 200519 yr Imbibe is opened and the World Famous C. Staples BBQ From the 70s and 80s reopened on NW Corner of downtown right by the Main Firestation.
March 19, 200619 yr I'm new to the forum, but have pretty much spent the entire day looking at the all the pics on the site. I am originally from the Y-town/Warren/Niles area and lived in Howland. I now am in Cincinnati going to the University of Cincinnati. It's good to see some pics of NE Ohio. It doesn't get enough credit sometimes. I personally love all the old homes on 5th Ave in y-town. And there aren't nearly enough pictures of Stambaugh Auditorium. I love this site though. There are tons of nice pics or Cinci and NE Ohio- my two favorite places in Ohio.
March 19, 200619 yr Great pics MayDay. Somehow I missed this the first time around. I've never been to Youngstown, but doesn't look nearly as bad as I thought it might. It looks like it is seeing some redevelopment. I guess it never hurts to have a university in town.
