December 14, 200717 yr in the 1970's they used to hand carve real roast beef for sandwiches at arbys and it was pretty good. its such crap now who would believe that?
December 14, 200717 yr I worked on advertising for Arbys and in the process learned some dusturbing-ass stuff about their product. Example: the "roast beef" they slice for you is actually just a big tube of compressed leavings--kind of like one of those treated fireplace logs, only with meat.
December 14, 200717 yr I don't want to know. The only thing I eat from there are their mozzarella sticks. They're so good.
December 15, 200717 yr I usually get chicken there. It's not bad. I reallygo there for the jamocha shakes...LOL
December 16, 200717 yr For special occasions, we'd go to the restaurant inside Higbee's (or was it May Company?) - the kid's meals came in a little box like an oven. You're thinking of the Silver Grille. It was on the 10th floor at Higbee's. It has since been completely restored and is operated by the Ritz as a banquet facility. I was there for a wedding about a month ago. Really pretty awesome. http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Cleveland/Meetings/RoomDetails/10thFlooroftheadjacentHigbeeBuildingatTowerCityCenter/TheSilverGrille.htm buckeye1 -- yes the silver grille was in the downtown higbees. however, the restaurant you are thinking of, in the higbees in the midway mall, was called "the attic." it was a favorite of my grandmother's. i can't believe you guys haven't included the coolest local tv news promo of all time, the one that put the anchorman in wil ferrell's movie anchorman, i am talking about cleveland's infamous psychedelic 'catch 5' news promo commercial from 1972. the youtube comments say, "it was the first ever local news image campaign (or news promo song) created in the united states. it is silly to today's audiences, but is historically significant." make sure you are wearing something polyester before you watch this..... [youtube=425,350]Mv55lReyf2w
December 16, 200717 yr The May Co. had a drink called a Frosted Malt. Something I've never found anywhere else! Glad we got off Arby's before the "mods" directed us to rename this thread!
December 16, 200717 yr ^^ thanks mrnyc - it was "The Attic" - I remember being terrified waiting in line because the entrance was right next to the bridal registry with all the breakable crystal and china on display and there were repeated parental warnings not to touch anything! I heard that when Dillard's took over, the "attic" area was used for stock, but the interior decor remained untouched - I'd like to break in there someday just to see if it's still there. By the way, now that the holidays are here, do you remember the talking Christmas tree at Midway - it was right outside JCPenney if I remember right. "Ohio's Showplace Enclosed Mall Shopping Center"?
December 16, 200717 yr God I know im old. Dorothy, Don & Gib. News legends! Bring them back, I tell you. Another reason for Clevelanders never to forget where our city was and where it rightfully belongs! MrNYC...thank you for reminding me I'm old and that I used to "catch five"
December 16, 200717 yr For Dan, from cleveland.com: Weber's, 20230 Lorain Road, Fairview Park. Call it the epicenter of the Great Malt Wars. Weber's, you see, is the home of the ORIGINAL Frosted Malt, created some 75 years ago. Soon thereafter, a flawed, thinner version of Weber's secret recipe popped up at the old Higbee Co. department store, according to current owner David Ford. "Knock-offs," as he calls them, then made their way to the May Co. Weber's secret lies in the 75-year-old machines still used to make the confection. I'm not taking sides here; the last time I did I got an earful from very angry malt-crazed readers. But I can say Weber's is quaint, the staff smiles a lot, and the Frosted Malt is a knockout. There's also a Weber's in Mentor. Rosati's, 17615 Detroit Ave., Lakewood. Taste-testing wine is easy: Just sip, slosh and exclaim: "Ah, earthy, excellent." Malts are more challenging, as I learned during a stop at this quaint parlor. I had the "Higbee's Chocolate Malted" about a half-hour after having the Weber's original Higbee's Frosted Malt. Both were good, but different -- for reasons so slight that I didn't know what to say. Well, they definitely are not earthy. With locations in North Olmsted and Northfield. Honey Hut, 4674 State Road, Cleveland, and 6250 State Road, Parma. Before opening this joint in 1974, Frank Page made "experimental" ice cream for his station buddies while working as a Cleveland fireman. "Experimental" as in using honey to create concoctions. I go bonkers over their oldie-but-goodie known as the "Original May Co. Malt," styled after that other department store brew. Higbee's purists might be appalled, but you can't argue with the pack of malties who wolf it down like starving dogs. Honey Hut also has locales in Bay Village, Strongsville and Brecksville.
December 16, 200717 yr Buckeye1, you are my hero! Frosted malts on me! Snow or not, I'm driving up to Cleveland!!
December 17, 200717 yr I used to get asked if my family owned the "J. P. Snodgrass" stores, to which I'd answer if we did we'd have a lot more money. They were actually owned by the now defunct Cook United (Uncle Bill's, etc), which was just down the street from where I lived and had a very spectacular fire in about 1970 or so.
December 17, 200717 yr the "roast beef" they slice for you is actually just a big tube of compressed leavings But "Compressed Leavings and Cheddar" just didn't sound as good.
December 17, 200717 yr Since winter's approaching, this is apropos (check out those gas prices!): [youtube=425,350]lVOJ2RqNYzg Sad this is that was less than 10 years ago.. I remember the sting they play in the background...it just cries out cold weather.
