Didn't see a thread about UD, so I'm starting one for any other alumni or fans to talk about UD basketball.

Also, if any other alumni out there don't know this, you can watch a majority of the games online through CSTV for free.

Few big schools willing to visit UD

Top teams shy away from traveling to play a mid-major with a raucous home crowd.

By Kyle Nagel - Staff Writer

Saturday, November 10, 2007

When Matt Doherty was the basketball coach at North Carolina, he was approached about playing the University of Dayton in UD Arena.  "It was going to be First in Flight against the home of the Wright brothers," Doherty said, "settling it once and for all."  Doherty said there was no chance he would play, thinking Dayton was a dangerous opponent for his Tar Heels.  His action is common among major college programs, which are hesitant to visit raucous arenas on the road, he said.  That creates problems for mid-major programs trying to fill their home schedules.

Some fans and season-ticket holders have expressed displeasure about the names on Dayton's nonconference schedule this season, particularly the teams visiting UD Arena.  Opponents like East Tennessee State, SMU, High Point, Coppin State, American and Loyola-Maryland annoy some who say paying as much as $30 more per ticket per game this season (including premium payments) should mean more big-name opponents.

Dayton's Wright A-10 rookie of the week

By Staff reports

Monday, November 12, 2007

University of Dayton freshman forward Chris Wright has been named Atlantic 10 rookie of the week after UD's 78-74 season-opening win over East Tennessee State at UD Arena on Saturday.  Wright, a Trotwood-Madison High School graduate, had a double-double debut with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

UD basketball wins thrilling opener

Roberts scores 31, freshman Wright has huge game in 78-74 win vs. tough E. Tennessee St.

DAYTON — Brian Roberts and his Dayton teammates knew facing East Tennessee State would be about as much fun as a migraine, and they got exactly what they expected: a worthy foe capable of scoring in bunches, applying relentless pressure and keeping the outcome in doubt until the final minute.  Roberts scored 19 of his 31 points in the second half, and Chris Wright racked up 22 points and 13 rebounds in his collegiate debut to lead the Flyers to a taut 78-74 victory before 12,115 nervous fans Saturday afternoon.

Nice early season upset over the weekend.

Roberts helps Dayton upset No. 14 Louisville

Point guard, shooting guard, it doesn't matter how to you try to label Dayton's Brian Roberts.  "I just want the ball in my hands and I want to make plays," Roberts said.  The senior made plenty of them Saturday, scoring 28 points as Dayton upset No. 14 Louisville 70-65.  The win spoiled Louisville coach Rick Pitino's first attempt at joining the 500-win club.  "This is a huge win for our program and for Dayton," Roberts said.  "We opened some eyes today.

The team is looking tough this year, I'm looking forward to seeing them in action at Fordham on March 1st.

Player of the Week: Brian Roberts, Dayton

By Andy Katz

Last week: seven points and five rebounds in a 68-54 win over High Point, and 28 points on 10 of 17 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in a 70-65 win over Louisville.  Few players had as much to do with as significant a win as Brian Roberts did for Dayton.  The senior guard scored 28 points in a win at Louisville.  He scored 14 of the Flyers' first 19 points.  There was a mid-game lull when Roberts didn't do much, but as soon as he turned it on again, the Flyers flew past Louisville.  He had no turnovers in 37 minutes.

This win could ultimately be a difference maker for Dayton in any bubble discussion.  That's why Roberts' play this week held even more meaning.  Beating Louisville at Freedom Hall will do wonders for this squad in March if it can challenge for the Atlantic 10 title.  Coupled with road wins over Miami (Ohio) and Holy Cross, the Flyers have built an impressive selection committee meeting résumé so far.

Flyers soaring with big wins

posted: Monday, December 10, 2007  |  Andy Katz

Dayton has three true road wins on Dec. 10.  That alone will give the Flyers plenty of points in March.  Dayton coach Brian Gregory wanted to put together a challenging slate and winning at Miami (Ohio) by one, at Holy Cross by two and then last Saturday at Louisville by five will prove to be significant in March if the Flyers can continue to be a factor in the A-10.  The only loss for the 7-1 Flyers came at George Mason.

Dayton is ranked 32nd in this weeks AP poll.

Dayton won a squeaker tonight against Akron, 84-81 in double overtime! If you didn't watch the game, all I can say is *whew*!  :box:

I think Akron is that good. . .I bet they win the MAC and make the big dance. If so, I think they'll be a team to watch. .

When they fouled Akron on that last play of the game and the announcers said it was a 3 point shot.. I nearly had a heart attack.. I've never seen so many fouls on 3 point shots.  Dayton played like SHIT but still won, that's the sign of a good team.

^----LOL! So did I! I was like "WHAT!?". Mike Hartsock was the announcer and he is usually pretty good...except that time.

Sweet Lord. . .me too. I needed a bottle of Tums for most of the game!

Dayton Knocks of #22 Rhode Island 92-83!

Another big win for UD!! Roberts has a way of showing up verse ranked teams.

Another nail bitter for the Flyers.  Roberts couldn't put the game away in regulation, but the team played a strong OT period and only let St. Louis score 2 points in the extra period.

D-A-Y-T-OOOOOOOO-N dayton flyers go UD!

My wife went to UD and i've attended many bball games their and that is a great atmosphere.

Dayton is really doing well this year! Championship bound? What is the current rank?

Dayton is now at #14 in one poll and #18 in the other. . . .

okay. . .UD fans, I have a question that has been driving me bonkers. Do the seats at UD arena start at 1 at the aisle seat and work their way in or does it start with the last number like 16 on the aisle and work its way in?

Ummm it depends on which part of the row you're looking at.. each isle will have a #1 on one side and a #16 on the other.

I guess from left to right. . .

If I'm standing on the court and looking at the center (welcome stadium would be on my left, courtyard mariott on my right). . .does it go 1-16 from left to right or 16-1 from left to right.

Left to right (1-16), if I remember correctly.

Thanks! I'm more than happy to go to the arena and see how the seating is numbered, but I don't know if it's open to the public to just walk in and check it out. I'm part of a big event that comes there in April and I'm trying to figure out where the best seats are going to be. . .

Gregory delighted to be at Dayton

Brian Gregory has been around those wandering-eye types, the coaches whose dream jobs are never the ones they have.  He sees them bouncing from school to school, uprooting their families, keeping a realtor on speed dial, searching for something greater.  More money?  Fame?  Superior players?  Maybe a better fit, whatever that means?  "Coaches sometimes make that mistake and then realize how good they had it," Gregory said.  "I do realize it."

Gregory has it pretty good at Dayton right now.  Led by underrated senior guard Brian Roberts, the Flyers entered the week ranked No. 17 in the AP poll after posting a 12-1 preconference record that included wins against Louisville and Pitt.  They are ranked in January for the first time since 1969.  Dayton opened Atlantic 10 play Wednesday night with a 92-83 win at home over No. 22 Rhode Island, giving the Flyers 12 straight victories.

Flyers reaching rare air in polls

UD men move up to 14th in AP poll, 18th in coaches' poll and fourth in the RPI standings.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

By Doug Harris, Staff Writer

DAYTON — The University of Dayton on Monday jumped from 17th to 14th in The Associated Press Top 25 men's basketball poll — UD's highest ranking in 40 years.  And while coach Brian Gregory talked more about upcoming foe Massachusetts than his team's lofty status, he did acknowledge it's a proud day for the program.  And he's even more pleased by UD's position in the Ratings Percentage Index standings.

After finishing 76th (out of 336 schools) in the computer ratings last season, UD has climbed to fourth — two spots ahead of UCLA and three in front of Kansas. No UD team has finished higher than 20th.  "Fourth in the RPI is pretty impressive to look at — more so when you look at the teams lower," Gregory said.  "We tried to organize our schedule to beat some quality teams if we were good."  The Flyers (14-1, 2-0 A-10) have gotten a bump with four road wins and three victories over ranked teams.

I can't wait till the big dance in March!

Going to the UMass game tonight.  Hopefully, they will pull out another win!!

GO Dayton Flyers!!

Not gonna be able to win too many games the way Dayton has played tonight.  With Wright hurt, Roberts needs a legit #2 to show up for them to win when Roberts can't score for whatever reason.

Agreed.

UD drops out of top 25

By Staff reports

Monday, January 28, 2008

Three straight losses have bounced the Dayton Flyers out of the Associated Press men's basketball rankings. UD, which was ranked No. 16 last week, no longer is in the top 25.  UD, which spent three weeks in the rankings, received 69 votes in the poll released today.  The Flyers have the 29th most points in the poll.

The Flyers fell to 14-4 with an 80-63 loss at Richmond on Saturday night.  UD, which is still without talented front-line players Chris Wright and Charles Little, hosts Saint Louis on Wednesday.  The Flyers were ranked as high as No. 14 on Jan. 14.

Amazing how when the Flyers suck all of a sudden, no one wants to talk about it anymore. LOL Oh well, it was a good run anyway! :-)

They don't suck.. more like they aren't healthy.

LOL I was being facetious ;-)

As long as their loses keep up a good RPI, and they get healthy, they'll be fine.

Rhode Island quiets Roberts, stops UD

Outside shots a big factor in 82-70 loss; Flyers fall for 4th time in 5 games despite balanced scoring.

KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island's Parfait Bitee is a native of Cameroon and still struggles some with English, but the basketball game plan against Dayton would have been clear to the senior guard in any language.  "We knew Brian Roberts is a great player," he said. "We had to keep him in front of us. We knew if he had a good game, they'd win."  The Rams kept the UD star in check, holding him to 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting, and built an 18-point second-half lead on their way an 82-70 victory Saturday.

The Flyers (15-5, 3-4 Atlantic 10) put five players in double figures — London Warren had 13 points, Kurt Huelsman 12 and Jimmy Binnie and Marcus Johnson 10 each — and they held A-10 player of the year candidate Will Daniels to just four.  But the Rams (19-3, 5-2) made nine of their first 18 3-pointers and got a lift from 6-foot-7, 235-pound senior Joe Mbang, who had 21 points off the bench (making four treys).

UD is falling a part. . .losing to GW?!?!? Ugh ;-( I think they may now have the same record as Wright State?

I'm sure when all is said and done, the season will be totally blamed on injuries and health. But a team cannot rely solely on two star players and expect to win all season long. The truth  be told, no one simply stepped up in their place, moral went down and now they are in trouble.

I'm still hoping they can pull it together and make the big dance, but losing to GW is NOT a good sign. I think their RPI is still good, but they better hope there are not a lot of teams that win their respective conferences that are not suppose too... .

Dayton left out of NCAA Tournament

In a conference call, NCAA Tournament selection committee chair Tom O'Connor explained the fate of several bubble teams.

"Dayton was a tremendous basketball team at the beginning of the year.  But they fell into a situation where they had some significant injuries (namely to freshman Chris Wright).  The reality check is that they had four losses against teams that were below 100 in our data-point collection (RPI).  You feel for a team like that because of injuries, but injuries are part of the game of basketball."

How 'bout them Flyers?! 8-0 and playing Creighton tonight.

How about 'em? We've seen this same song and dance from the Flyers before, fast start with some impressive wins, only to see them fade down the stretch and get worked in A10 play.

I hope they're the real deal this year, I just don't see them keeping this up w/out a Brian Roberts to bail them out. Wright is good, but he can only do so much.

Good luck against Creighton, they're always tough. I'll be watching my Muskies crush the Bobcats of OU tonight. The A10 needs as many non-con wins as possible.
