I've been really busy so I haven't been posting articles, and this is a thread that has suffered, and I apologize.

However, how bout' them Flyers?  18-2.

Big game vs. SLU tonight.

  • The 20-2 Flyers moved up one spot in this week's AP poll to #6.   This ties their AP ranking from December 1968.

  • Dayton climbed from #6 to #5 in the AP poll today.  Apparently it's still less then the program’s highest ranking of #2 in 1956.   But still...

I fully expect a matchup of 21-2 Xavier vs. 22-2 Dayton on 2-11. The A-10 needs a signature game like this.

I also fully expect the Flyer's to roll over like the paper tigers they are.

Your schedule has in no way prepared you for what X will bring.

That's nice, go talk in the Xavier thread.

Hey. I wish nothing but the best for Dayton, they're the only other school bringing any sort of respectability to this sad sack of a league.

But here's an honest question, and I'm not trying to be a smart ass. Does the fact that Dayton's SOS is north of 180 take away from the gaudy record at all?

If you don't have the team, sure let up on the scheduling a little bit, no need to pull a temple and continue to schedule teams like you did in the mid 90's. But that kind of SOS is not going to a.) Impress the selection committee, or b.) Prepare a team for success in the tournament.

Thoughts?

a.) Dayton will make the tourny regardless of their schedule, excluding a monumental collapse.

b.) Every team has creampuff games, you and I both know that.. in fact, many of XU/UD's non-conference opponents were the same.  Is XU's non-conference schd harder? Yes.  Will I give XU 2-0 vs. UD this year, no way.

a.) False, False, False, False, False. What makes you say that? UD had a great RPI last year, in fact they had the highest RPI of any team NOT to make the tournament in NCAA history. Reason? Scheduling, or lack thereof on Dayton's part.

b.) Every team does have creampuffs, but when your schedule is made up almost exclusively of said puffs, then you have a problem. Marquette and Creighton are the only decent teams Dayton has played, maybe Auburn.  And I think we both know you're not going to get a boost in SOS from the A10.

UD has the third weakest SOS in the A10. If I were a fan of the program I would be concerned. That's all I'm trying to get at.

Am I thrilled about their schedule? No.  But nothing can be done but play it and win as many as possible, if they post an excellent record overall and in the conference, they will make the tourny.  They didn't make it last year because of their conference schedule collapse.  The only affect of their schedule will be a lower seed.

Time to eat your words...

Dayton defeats #14 Xavier at UD Arena by a score of 71-58

This is a signature win that was desperately needed for a Dayton team with arguably only 1 signature win before tonight (Marquette).  This puts UD in a much better position to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004.

So REK.. if Dayton is such a paper dragon and we rolled over you.. what does that say about Xavier?

I have no comment b/c my foot is entirely in my mouth.

Dayton is now ranked #25 in the AP poll.

That's it?  They were 26th last week.  I expected a bigger jump in the AP this week.

Dayton 69, Richmond 64.. Dayton moves on to play Duquesne (who beat the #2 seed Rhode Island) in the semi-finals!

This win really solidified UD getting in the tournament, a win vs. Duquesne, and they're a lock.

You been Duke'd!

The Flyers are in the tournament as a #11 seed.  Dayton will face #6 seed West Virginia in Minneapolis.

Nice to see 3 teams in from A10. Tough draw for Dayton in the first round.

Yeah, WVU is playing good ball, but nobody has an easy game in the tourny.

HUGE UPSET. Dayton will riot tonight.

Where's the BE contingent to tell us the top 8 teams in the BE are better than the best the A10 has to offer?  UD 2-0, XU 1-0 against BE.

Yeah Dayton just EF'd up my bracket!  Luckily every one chose WV to win.

I'd also like to throw in that this is the first tournament win for Dayton since 1990 and one Jim O'Brien, so this is a huge deal. Congrats fella's.

Always love to see Huggins go down.

3 out of the 4 number one seeds were from the BE...'nuff said.

Today was a tough day for the Ohio teams left in tournament.  Dayton gets eliminated by #3 seed Kansas.  Congrats on a great season, Flyers!

Dayton played like total crap yet was still in it for most of the game.  Lets see what this team can do next season when healthy.

Tonights game against Kansas State is televised on ESPU.  I've never followed Dayton but I've been watching this game.

Disappointing finish to the tournament.  I expected a better effort against K State after a good win against Georgia Tech and playing Nova really tough.

Looking at Dayton's schedule, they need to be top 2 in the A-10 (where they've struggled the last two seasons) to make the dance.  They have an extremely weak schedule from here on out.  Especially given the fact that no one from the A-10 is currently ranked nationally.

With that said, they're 2-2 against 4 teams that are all probably top 30 in the nation.  Not a bad start, but they'll need to play consistently strong all year if they want to play in March.  It would be nice to have beaten Nova or K State to pick up some key netural court wins.  We played both teams tough, but will that matter on selection Sunday?

NIT: Johnson leads Dayton to final

Wednesday,  March 31, 2010 - 2:51 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK - Brookhaven grad Chris Johnson scored 22 points, including five key free throws down the stretch, and Dayton held off Mississippi 68-63 in an NIT semifinal last night.  Marcus Johnson added 12 points for the Flyers (24-12), who slowed Mississippi's high-scoring offense and advanced to the championship game for the first time since winning their second NIT title in 1968.

Next up, Dayton has a chance to end a disappointing season on a high note.  Picked before the season to win the Atlantic 10 Conference, the third-seeded Flyers will play Thursday against North Carolina.  The Tar Heels, last year's NCAA Tournament champions, won the other semifinal 68-67 in overtime.

NIT CHAMPIONSHIP | DAYTON 79 - NORTH CAROLINA 68

Flyers shine with fine finish

Winning a title atones for disappointing regular season

Friday,  April 2, 2010 - 2:51 AM

By Mike Fitzpatrick, Associated Press

NEW YORK - Dayton players danced at midcourt and then lingered on ladders as they cut down the nets in Madison Square Garden.  Forgive these Flyers for taking a little extra time to soak it all in.  They're not as accustomed to trophy ceremonies as the North Carolina team they had just defeated.

Marcus Johnson scored 20 points and Dayton denied last year's national champions another title, topping the Tar Heels 79-68 last night to win the NIT.

Dayton won an ugly 2OT game on 1/1/11.  They had New Mexico locked up at the end of Regulation and did not score in the last 4 min at all.  Kind of glad that I couldn't watch the game, I may have to buy a new TV from throwing things at it.

^There were two HUGE dunks by UD players in that game.  Both made the Sportcenter Top 10.  I'll post the youtube videos if I remember when I get home.

Boom and boom

OSU plays Dayton in the first round of the tourney.  The Dayton players were pretty amp'ed up about drawing OSU, game is one of the first on Thursday, 12:15 in Buffalo.

I'm biased, being a UD grad, but think UD can beat OSU.  Beating Syracuse will be another matter.

^ UD grad tedders55 posted in the OSU basketball thread, but since there is a Dayton Flyers thread I thought I'd copy it here.

Congrats to the Flyers.  Some interesting cross pollination between UD and OSU: UD's head coach was once an assistant for Thad Matta at OSU; and UD's leading scorer is Jordan Sibert, who transferred to Dayton after two seasons at OSU.

The Flyer's almost got Craft'ed.  Seemed like that kid couldn't miss down the stretch.  Good on Dayton getting the win against OSU, but they could have locked that game up and kept my blood pressure down.

Onto the Orange!

The Flyers pull off an even bigger upset with a victory over #3 Syracuse.  Dayton's in the Sweet 16!

UD plays the first Sweet 16 game of Thursday night - 7:15pm at Memphis.  Dayton faces #10 seeded Stanford.

This is really cool. All you have to do is enter your name and email address, and they will deliver a meal to a Dayton area resident in need.  I'm gonna have to cheer against the Pac-12 in this one...go Flyers!

Clevelander17 and I have known this forever, but now the rest of the nation knows that The University of Dayton is Elite!!

Great run Flyers.  It took the #1 overall seed to eliminate you.

And Dayton didn't play their best. Had they, they're in the Final Four.

Great job Flyers! Definitely back!

What a great run and no shame in how it ended.  UD will lose Oliver and Kavanaugh, but I like their chances to make some noise again next year with Pierre and Sibert returning.  As long as Miller sticks around, this program will be competitive and fun to watch.  It's been a long time coming.
