There is actually already one along the riverfront, it is down a bit further behind Serpentine Wall, at the base of the One Lytle Place. Lifeguarded there a few years ago. It is about two feet deep all around with waterfall steps. Other than a paint job, it is pretty cool.

Plans for the Riverfront park that's part of the Banks Project are moving forward.

The federal funding for the Banks Park is part of a $23 billion water resources bill.

President Bush vetoed that bill on Thursday, but the Senate over-rode the veto.

The bill provides millions of dollars to fund the project.

the park will be the part of the banks i frequent the most

Open lawn spaces are the best spaces in parks...especially for young people.  You'll always find people laying out, reading, eating, playing football, tossing frisbee, etc.  I tend to think that YPs are more interested in less structured park spaces where they can create their own fun.  That 12 acre lawn should be a great addition to the Downtown area.

^ has anyone heard if they will be allowing dogs in the park, or is it going to be another fountain square?

Actually, I'm most excited about the fountains.  As simple as it is, there's still something fascinating about running water.

*shakes head*

Uncle Rando I couldn't have said it better myself LOL.  This is a riverfront park, not a yard for people to layout and roll over in dog turds.

Just wash it off in the fountain.

^ Maybe if the caps over FWW ever happen, there will be parks that can be "dog friendly" if the Riverfront Park is not.

Gimme a BREAK.  Know one big thing that keeps people from moving downtown?  They can't reasonably have dogs.  Responsible dog owners clean up after their pets.

I am a responsible basin area dog owner and my dog has seen her share of discrimination around Fountain square.  Sure the police horses, rock doves, starlings and house sparrows can pee and crap wherever they want but my pup has to drink from another fountain when she is hot. BS

I agree, it should be illegal for birds to poop on Fountain Square!

Its not the responsible people who are the problem, I don't want to step in the dog poop of irresponsible people.

Somehow I doubt dogs are holding people back from moving downtown, the people who want to be here are here, everyone else finds excuses not to move downtown and thats fine, its not for everyone.

^ I disagree, seriously.  For dog owners, this is a big issue.

I will be moving to OTR (when I find the right investment property and rehab it) but where I can move is GREATLY influenced by where I will be able to walk my dog.

If you don't want to step in the poop of irresponsible people the solution is to actually work for enforcement of the ordinances that prohibit not cleaning up after your dog.  (This is how it works in most cities).  The answer is not to ban dogs in public parks.

Are dogs allowed in the other riverfront parks?

I've never been hassled for bring my dog to any of em, only fountain square.

I actually think that dogs should and will be allowed.  I don't believe that Fountain Square is an actual Cincinnati Park...please correct me if I'm wrong.  I was shaking my head because I don't even think it is an issue.  Dogs will certainly be allowed at the CRP.

^ That's what I was thinking

^ Randy, the gimme a break wasn't directed at you ;)  No, fountain square is not an actual Cincinnati Park (and frankly while I don't really want to take my dog there (there's no grass), it would be nice to be able to just walk through without harassment.

If it still holds true, you are allowed to have dogs in Bicentennial Commons, but not Sawyer Point.  I don't know to what extent they really enforce it during non-event periods though.

It should all be good as long as it's on a leash.

^ Thats part and parcel of "responsible dog owner".  Leashes, always (unless in enclosed dog park), and PLENTY of bags to clean up after them.  I don't like stepping in it, and I don't presume that my animal should be the reason someone else should either.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason dogs aren't allowed on the Square isn't because of dog poo, but doggie pee.  It either erodes or discolors the materials they used.  Anywhere with large swaths of grass shouldn't be a problem.

^Good reason!

Yup, that is part of the reasoning - there is some limestone based mortar in use and pee will erode it more than the norm.  Then again, my dog won't do that unless she is on grass... She's not that old yet ;)

The only thing that bothers me about the dogs on fountain square policy is that the police are more than active in enforcing it.  Heck, I've been harassed for walking my dog on the sidewalk on the same side of the street as the square and told I had to cross the street if I wanted to walk my dog.  Its an acceptable policy, unacceptably enforced.  I'd rather see those same police officers giving out tickets to owners who don't clean up after their dogs..

Anyhow, for us dog owners, a place to walk our pet is a SERIOUS consideration for where we live.  Unless folks think CBD/OTR have already hit as many people as will possibly move there, I just hope that these public spaces consider the fact that this is a consideration in deciding where to live.

Just a random blurb...FS was packed today (as it typically is) and there was a police horse drinking out of the fountain.  I found that particularly cool and kind of retro...but it did remind me of this discussion about dogs on FS.

Horse piss is a completely different ballgame, you know, molecularly speaking.

^ My grandfather told me once that back in the old days (turn of the century), workers would mop buckets of horse piss onto new copper roofs because it apparently accelerates the oxidation process.  Whether that actually works or not is anyone's guess.

Totally off topic, but how often does horse pee get brought up?

Yes, I presume we're all familiar with Dr Henry Higginbotham's seminal Equine Micturition in Industrial Application, 1911.

Actually, pregnant mare's urine is used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, like the creatively named premarin.

LOL

I'm allergic to dust mites.

Cincinnati Riverfront Park gets OK

Business Courier of Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Park Board will break ground Sept. 29 for phase one of its Riverfront Park, to be located south of the planned Banks subdivision along the Ohio River.

This will be insanely cool.  The event lawn with the stage should attract an ungodly amount of performers.

Tru dat!!!

This is good news.  I'm not sure about the stage though.  Sawyer Point already has one nearby.  While not a terrible idea, it doesn't seem necessary either.

^More the merrier!          Put more local bands on them.    2 stages, plus the idea of having a temp. stage on the PP Bridge sometimes.

They are people magnets that wouldn't take much from each others as long as they coordinate the events well.

"Subdivision"?

"Subdivision"?

Haha, that's what I thought too seicer. I don't remember seeing any cul-de-sacs in the development plans.

Great news by the way!

This park is just going to be sick ...

Us humans have a supernatural fascination with large water (rivers, lakes, ocean) ... I can see this being a huge draw!

Seriously, when this is all said and done, can you think of a better riverfront in the nation?

Chicago

Chicago

Okay, maybe outside Chi-town? lol

"Subdivision"?

Haha, beat me to it.

^^and I don't know about Chicago's riverfront... very narrow river that doesn't have a park?  Lots of buildings and the spiral parking garage, but no park.

If you meant their lakefront with bicentennial park, then you're 100% correct.

Cincinnatus, your absolutely right.  Nothing will compare.  I'm going out on a limb here and saying when all is said and done, The Banks will be THE number one riverfront in the country.  If someone can list or give evidence of an existing riverfront that will have better development and appeal, by all means post! I'm not saying other cities don't have nice riverfronts.  I'm just saying Cincy will have the mac daddy one;) think about it.  It's almost scary.

LOL...  "the mac daddy one"  I guess it will complement that big 'mac daddy' bridge...

^ Damn, you know, I wasn't even thinking about the Roebling playing as a backdrop. Yeah, I think this would give Chicago a run for it's money as long as it goes according to plan. Now, all we need is for Pittsburgh to set up a major multi-billion dollar filtering system for the Ohio. Hmmm ...
