It's a Duke Energy clean up site.

http://www.duke-energy.com/westend/

So that explains it but there sure is some weasel wording on the page.

In looking at that aerial they have, is there ever any hope of developing the Hilltop site?

Check out the FAQ's.  They basically said, in every way they could possibly phrase it, "The site is not dangerous, we promise; but we are cleaning it up to ensure it is safe."

Simply, no one likes to admit they made a mess.

Water is flowing! Sorry I couldn't get any closer...

I noticed last night leaving work they had the water flowing from the stairs as well as the overhangs (not sure what they are called).  They were also all lit up in various rainbow colors.  Not sure if I liked that. It kind of looked cheezy but it could grow on me.

Moerlein Lager House opening delayed

Unexpected construction delays have pushed back the opening date for the new Moerlein Lager House in Smale Riverfront Park, adjacent to The Banks.

Originally set to open Feb. 6, the microbrewery is now expected to open three weeks later, on Feb. 27

Hmmmm, not sure how I feel about that lighting scheme. The lighting in the park definitely needs to be colorful and vibrant to match the energy the area wants/needs to have to be successful, but I've always felt rainbow lighting removes any sense of classiness in an area. I love the look of the steps/waterfall, but the moment I saw that picture I was turned off. Not only that, but the entire development of the Banks and the park has a very clear color scheme and using one vibrant color (blue would do it for me) that would compliment it would work quite well in my opinion.

I had the great pleasure of joining members of the Park Board for a tour of the Riverfront Park (a friend is on the board).  Gonna be honest- it was AWESOME.

I bet the LED's can be whatever color they want, and they are simply testing the system.

^ So they will be all red when the Reds win the Pennant next year?

(And the Series? :))

^^I figured as much. I'm hoping the everyday color scheme is a little less hectic. If there is an ever-changing scheme like in Fountain Square that is only rainbow every so often, I can deal with that. I still wouldn't like it, but that's my issue, not the park's.

Fun thing about the Lager House, it will launch with at least one all-new Moerlein beer

My wife went down to check out the job fair and said that it was packed around 10:45.  Hope they pick some good ones.

^

Whomever they pick is going to get an education, from food to beer to history.  Myself and some others will be helping teach the staff about the brewing history in Cincinnati.

My Fiancée and I had picked the Event Lawn as the location for our Wedding Reception in 2012. In September of last year we started working with Cincinnati Parks on the details. As the park is new and still under construction, they were unsure who would be managing events at the park. None the less they had us fill out a Special Use application and advised we'd have first pick of dates after the city had determined their event schedule. After several internal meetings between various entities, it was determined (beginning of November) that Christian Moerlein would be handling event scheduling and we were put in touch with a representative there. Available dates were still undecided but they too advised we'd have first pick of dates after the city had determined their event schedule. After almost 3 months of meetings being scheduled then canceled and meetings taking place with nothing being decided, most all park details were finally set. They are...

The cost of reserving the space when not in use will be $5000. What?! Ault Park is only $2800 (Friday - Sunday) and is probably the most popular outdoor wedding reception location in Cincinnati.

Moerlein Lager House will be the only available vendor for food and beverage. They would also be the entity that books and coordinates events.  Things like tables, chairs, tents, etc, would all be booked through them but pricing is yet to come. We expected the Lager House would be the sole vendor available to us.

The dates are firm at this point for when the lawn will be used for public functions. All 2012 black out dates for the lawn events:

^crazy!!

Wow, you got screwed. Sorry man.

If Moerlein is handling the event lawn scheduling, I wonder how many of those dates are actually for them. Just reading your post I get the impression that they are acting like the event lawn is an extension of their restaurant. That's pretty shitty.

Soon, America will have no concept of public space.

Soon, America will have no concept of public space.

just playing devil's advocate here, but is a public space really public when it's rented out?

I understand it's probably away for the parks to make money, but renting out the lawn space for private use doesn't seem like the best option, especially this lawn space that sounds like it could get a lot of use.  Granted, it is called the event lawn so maybe that's what they intended it to be used for.

btw - sorry Cynus, regardless of my above statement, it sounds like you got screwed.

What? Public space? When the park board determines that a public space can close at 10 PM and that it has the authority to "ticket" people for violating an unwritten and unenforceable rule, then it is regarded as a private venue. While they did recently change the rules (again) to say that the park can be closed at a certain hour, it was found to still be... unenforceable.

That being, I can understand the need to rent out some public spaces for items like weddings and mass gatherings, which is revenue the park board could then use for improvements, but there is nothing stopping someone from holding an impromptu wedding or reception on public land - especially when taxpayer monies are involved.

A couple of things grabbed my attention when I saw the list of blocked out days:

Is somebody else paying $5000/day for those dates? That would be quite a bit of money.

What will be going on the days that are already reserved?  Looks like something Wed-Sun. all summer.

I asked and they have no answers... Thanks for all your comments though! We've decided on the CAC for the reception.

Smale Riverfront Park Construction Update: Phase I Nearing Completion!

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

For easy reference, here is the rough phasing of the park plan:

phasing_diagram_enlarged.jpg

The one thing that i havent seen addressed (or even mentioned in the videos) is the actual riverbank.  Are they going to leave the old Riverfront Stadium retaining wall, or will a stepped wall be installed at some point?  I know a stepped wall is illustrated in renderings but i see no evidence that it will actually be implemented.  Is that something they may wait to complete once all phases are finished?

The actual riverbank will be similar to the serpentine wall. But it will be built very late in the project across the entire riverfront and needs to be designed/approved by the army corps of engineers

I really wish the work being done in Phase 4 was set for Phase 2 instead.

^Lurking from up north and I don't get to this thread that often so I apoligize if I am asking a question that has been answered a million times or is easy to find.  When is the completion date of all Phases and do they have the $$$ already for the entire project.  Thanks.

By the way, it looks great so far.

Roughly 2018 and no.

^Thanks for the reply.  That's a little farther in the future than I imagined.  Good thing ODOT doesn't have anything to do with it or that completion date might be moved to 2050.

I don't recall seeing anything similar to what they are installing in renderings...

I'm guessing it's for the Hops garden vines to grow on.

That was my initial thought but it's located on the North side of the building:

The hop vines I've seen have been much taller than that, granted that was in a agricultural area where these are mainly for show. My guess is they added additional outdoor dining.

It is the frame for a semi-permanent canvas type cover/roof for the biergarten.  The frames will have removable plexiglass type wall panels to be able to be used year round, along with heating.  There will also be at small stage at the south end.

^ Interesting... Thanks!

According to those renders, it looks like the parking garage was going to be completely closed off with the sandstone.  Is that not the case today?  Or are they still working on it?

I believe it's complete. I was hoping they would at least install some sort of metal venting.

Anyone else remember the Riverfront Stadium Beer Garden?

Also, I am told that there is a plaque marking the location of the Riverfront Stadium home plate somewhere in the bottom of that garage.

^There is also a home base plaque right in the middle of the Lager House lobby.

I heard there was also a plaque marking the Bengals bench area. I've found neither.

^There is also a home base plaque right in the middle of the Lager House lobby.

The the Lager House wasn't anywhere near homeplate. More likely, its space was parking garage space to the south of the playing field. Wasn't Holy Grail somewhere around the third-base line blue seats?

There is some sort of base marker in the lobby of the Lager House, I was just there last night.  First base maybe?  Looking at CAGIS, it's not as far away as you think:

Cool Graphic!

Wow that is a cool graphic. I was way off where I thought the Lager House was in relation to the baseball field. Of course, that field layout in that graphic was only in use during Riverfront's last couple of years (after the Bengals left and after the switch to grass). The original layout (home plate, bases, pitchers mound) was moved nine feet to the west in order to bring the walls in slightly to allow GABP construction.

Also, what was the elevation difference between the playing field and the new Banks street level, or the ground floor of the Lager House for that matter?

  • 2 weeks later...

The Lager House is slated to open on the 27th (with a sold-out private opening on the 25th). Can't wait till I can make it there.

Moerlein redeems 2 dreams

by David Holthaus

When it opens to the public on Feb. 27, the Moerlein Lager House will be a fine place to enjoy good beer and good food on the Cincinnati riverfront.

But that’s only half the story.

The rest of the story is the long-awaited redemption of sorts for downtown Cincinnati, where development of more than 50 valuable acres along the Ohio River had been frustrated for years. Now, the new brewpub and restaurant has potential to be the destination for the between-the-stadiums development that includes The Banks. At the same time, it provides a vital link to Cincinnati’s rich, but once endangered, brewing heritage.
