Why would Smale Park need to be modified? The areas of Smale Park and The Banks that are currently flooded are areas that the planners knew would flood in these types of high river events, it seems to be working as expected.

The river bank west of the suspension bridge has eroded way faster then they thought it would due to the river flooding multiple times every year.  What was designed to be a slope down into the river has turned into a 5+ foot dropoff that is getting higher each year.  To permanently fix the issue they are going to have to install some combination of concrete and/or rocks to stabilize the riverbank.  Last update was from over a year ago, but who knows if that federal money is still available.

Just seems stupid to spend $120+ million on the park buildout and not include this riverbank plan from the beginning.

I might be misremembering but I thought that section between the walkway and the river was left kind of unfinished because of the planned boat dock. Either way this area needs to get finished up with riprap and a boat ramp and/or water access of some kind.

I don't think so. The boat dock proposals I've seen have always been on the *east* side of Roebling, near where the Main St terminates into the park.

I'm no engineer but you probably wouldn't want a boat dock right next to an area that had to be stabilized with rip rap and rocks, especially if the water levels get too low. I still think they need some docks at Smale but I wonder just how far out into the river you could extend them without being a navigation hazard.

Or, better yet, make Public Landing a marina. There's not much there except concrete.

the first proposal i remember was an ugly boat next to or near the Public Landing. and the caption read something like, This is just a proposal and not how the landing will look. It was an elementary drawing of a boat that would never work for the Ohio River.
