Germany's oldest solar power company has committed to establishing its U.S. headquarters in Cleveland.

IBC Solar AG, with $700 million in sales this year in Europe, wants to begin assembling solar panels here.

Is this big?

Cool.

I wonder if they'll have enough money left over to buy the Cleveland Browns.

Yes, this is big.

Very good! This is exciting!

To me, this really sounds like the begining of a new groundbreaking industry in Ohio.  Several years in the making.

The Ohio Senators did a piss poor job with the electricity regulation bill. They amended it to suit First Energy & the power companies.  If the House does not put the renewable energy milestones back in the bill, IBC Solar AG will not locate here.

Wake up, legislators!!!  Stop with the thinking from another century.

Exciting news!

^ Yes, I was previously A 2 da K.

This is fantastic news...especially great for Cleveland, but also good for Ohio as a whole.

The solar industry in Germany has gone crazy, the government has raised rates of all other power and made solar the cheapest. They have solar panels on the side of the highways there. This is very good for Cleveland, Ohio and the U.S.

Who should I be writing to in the Ohio legislature to make a more favorable setting for alternative fuels. Everyone??

My suggestion is to contact the chairpersons of the relevant committees and any members from your region.

Here's the Ohio House of Representatives' Alternative Energy Committee (including members and contact information):

The only ones from Northeast Ohio are on the Democratic side (in fact three of the four minority party members are from NEO):

Fende

Lundy

Williams

The Ohio Senate's Energy and Public Utilities Committee:

The Northeast Ohio members of this committe are:

Coughlin ®

Spada ®

Mason (D)

Wilson (D) -- bit of a stretch as a NEO member, but maybe close enough to Cleveland to care?

Jackson wants Public Power to use more renewable sources

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson wants Cleveland Public Power to make or buy at least 25 percent of its power from advanced or renewable energy sources by 2025...

The only road block I see in this is what kind of pull American Electric Power (AEP) has with the state.  Obviously, they are one of the largest, if not the larget, energy provioders in the US with coal fired plants.  And, they are headquartered in Columbus.  They have plants in Ohio, WV, Arkansas, Indiana, Texas, Kentucky...and the list goes on.  I would love to see them go down with the birth of renewable energy, but I would also love to be a fly on the wall in their head guys office when he's talking on the phone to Strickland.

An acquaintance was interested in applying for the City's sustainability position - mind you, this was years ago (pre-Jackson) but they declined to take the position when they were told "well, we don't want to be too efficient with certain things - we don't want to upset Cleveland Public Power".
