When was the Dollar Bank bldg built? I ask because I was expecting to see a semi-cool and/or historic facade under the present hideous one, but that's not the case.

I saw Mayday lurking at lunch and I think it's safe to say his pictures are going to be waaaayyyyy better than mine... so at least i can be first.  :-P

 

Needless to say, demolition has intensified:

 

1. I believe this very large crane is about to spell the end of the dollar bank building.

2. Sections of the canopy are being removed, all that natural wild plant life going to waste.  :lol:

5. I still think it's too bad this building had to go.

6. One of the three Bobcats I saw roving around wreaking havoc inside 668.  When I saw them rolling around in the dark of the building with those headlights, I kept thinking of the opening scenes of the original terminator.

they emptied the two out front when i was there today... i'd love to see how many times they do that a day.  they also have them coming in and out of the prospect garage...

Dollar bank is coming down via wrecking ball right now. Took some pics post them in the morning.

Dollar Bank took quite a beat down in front of a crowd of onlookers after work today.

^I was one of the onlookers...i stood and watched for about 10 minutes...I am amazed that they can do this whole violent process without damaging anything around it...

They've set up some plywood boards in front of the BRT Station so nothing damages the glass.

Apparently there were multiple UOers in the crowd and we didn't even know it.  I was passing by about 5 yesterday when I saw them fixing the bucket and wrecking ball to the crane.  I walked over and asked one of the foremen when they were planning on starting (expecting to here something like 7 or 8am tomorrow) and he said "about 2 minutes".  So I planted myself in front of the Nat City Investments building watched for about an hour and took some pics.  My personal favorite was when Suzy Suburbanite came wandering by looking for someone to share her wisdom with... she chose me.  "How much do you want to bet they never build what they're planning there... and they destroy that worthless new bus station in the process."  I thought momentarily about throwing her into oncoming traffic on Euclid Avenue, but alas the Health Line won't be running till October.  I shook my head and walked away... Here's the pics:

i love the people who just can't bring themseleves to finish crossing the street and use the sidewalk, and instead to try and walk along a 12" median next to moving traffic.  Darwin awards in the making.  I also can't wait for the "green roof" to finish disapearing.  nice shots.

What's the story with all the tires on the sidewalk in the first photo? Where were they found??

the tires are there to soften the impact and deflect debri coming off the building.

It's getting ridiculous, people just walk wherever they want.  I am actually starting to look forward to the first idiot who gets smacked by a car or brt, just so people stop aimlessly wandering the road.

there are ways to design around this... to discourage or prevent this, but I presume they'll just have to be tacked on at the end once something horrible happens.  But that's a topic for another thread!  Viva la 668!

It won't be a problem once the sidewalk opens again, sometime before BRT service begins.

This is a discussion that should be made over at the Euclid Corridor/HealthLine thread in the transportation section. And that's not just because discussions about the BRT are off-topic. RTA officials interact with forumers at that thread (and the GCRTA thread) so your concerns will likely be addressed there.

I thought that portion of Euclid has been re-shut down to traffic again.. it was not open on Monday night at 7pm when I drove thru.. detour took me down E. 6 -> Vincent.

Are they doing demo during the work day?  My first thought was that they were tearing it down during non-work hours to avoid any disruptions.

K&D and Wolstein are certainly parting from the Cleveland development norm with their deconstruction/construction pace.

I certainly have my reservations about some aspects of K&D.  However... whenever I hear an announcement from them I smile... because simply I know it's going to get done, and they won't spend eons posturing.  They are definitely "doers", which is a welcome change in Cleveland.

This building is disapearing... rapidly.

 

PS It is really hazy out and i was using my ultra crappy work cam 2000.  Deal with it.  :-P

 

Also... While taking pictures I was listening to whom I believe to be the job PM talking with the foreman for the demo company.  It was a little noisy but I heard something... yada yada yada, finalizing terra cotta contracts, yada yada yada, should start "soon".

So how do we think the new brick pavers are holding up underneath the carnage?

I noticed yesterday that they are also dismantling (via welders torch) piece by piece, the huge metal monstrosity on the southeast corner of the building.  This is the structure that has what appears to be a huge HVAC unit of some sort on top...

^^ though there is I'm sure no way to completely protect against something like this, I did watch the prep work.  Large steel plates were layed down on the brick sidewalks, plywood was laid over the steel plates, rubber tires were tossed on top of the plywood.

 

i'll still be surprised if something doesn't need fixed after this.

 

By the way... I'd HATE to be a guest of the Mariott residence Inn right now.

Since i have a 3 hour and 45 minute break in between classes i sat underneath the holiday inn express awning for a good hour watching the demolition of this building yesterday around lunchtime. Everyone walking by couldnt help but look up and most of the people seemed pretty informed of what was replacing dollar bank and the apartments as well. 

 

Looks like the smokers lounge got a little more intresting.  Great Shots!
