Chains?  Who said anything about chains?  Why raise the specter, when no chains have been mentioned in connection with 668?

As for the hat stores, they're great.  But I have no love for Volk's or the music store.  A jewelry pawn shop isn't very interesting compared to say, a pawn shop.  And I already have all the rhinestone encrusted pimp cups I could ever want.

Well if they close, how will you ever get your big daddy Lucius Malfoy pimp cane out of hock?

Volks has been there for 100 years or some crazy crap like that.  I like that it's there.  It keeps the street off balance - in a good way.

Slander!  I would never pawn my pimp cane!  I can't pimp without it!  And even if I could, I couldn't pawn it at Volk's.  They'd only take my pimp rings and pimp necklaces.  And maybe my diamond crusted pimp bracelet.  Volk's is no pimp cane exchange, sir.

Anyway, why do you want my street "off balance" and what does that mean, anyway?

"off balance" = Non Generic and sterile.

As others have said, stores like Volks have personality and usually their owners/employees have personality along with first hand knowledge of the area and its history.

I'll go on record as saying I'm a huge fan off "off balance" stores, but not of the Volk's variety.  It has the type of personality we don't need more of.

Yeah, I don't think that our options are limited to Volk's or generic.  I think there may be other, non-generic options out there.

Let us know when your Pimp Emporium & Haberdashery opens.  LOL

I can't wait for your line of Flava-Flav sized "X" chains to hit the streets!

No one said anything about chains. I did! And I am just saying that I hope that chains are not invited...and instead... it can maintain a more local character and identity all its own on that street level scene.

guys... this is starting to veer off 668, into a general retail discussion of the entire surrounding neighborhood...

I for one would like to not see any chain stores move in.  I think unique-ness will be key for 668.  I know for sure Titans will be operated totally different then "chain" gyms like Fitworks or Ballys.  And as for Starbucks.... Blah, I don't think we want Cleveland being like everyone city with one on every corner.  That kind of takes away from the little guy like myself and my wife.  It is hard enough to operate a business, but when you have to compete with the likes of Starbucks or other chains who have unlimited funds for employees and advertising life as an independant gets rough.  Besides, http://www.titanupcafe.net sells coffee too!!!  Sorry, I am advertising already

Did anyone on here move into their apt. on the 15th?  If so, how is it?

I have no clue how to do this.  Honestly, I am not sure I am allowed to do this.  Sorry KD if I am not...  These are not completely done atm. I actually will be blowing these up and bringing them down to 668 so Jill(property manager) can display them with photos and specs of the fitness and tanning equipment that Titans will have

hmm.  seems i didnt post the picture but put an attachment...  sorry

tripspapa, is it looking like January 1 is still a realistic goal for opening?

I was going to but I did not. I leased in another building on East 4th St.

Just saw the almost-finished Prospect facade today, and was almost in shock to find one of the entrances opens into a whole corridor with what looks like it's to be small shops?  What's that all about?  The floorplan they show in a window only include upstairs plans so they give no indication.

I like the old-fashioned textural pattern on the walls, which remind me slightly of the Taylor Arcade that used to be there (or at least an arcade of that period .  Question:  Does anyone know if this corridor is actually in the spot where the Arcade was?  I have it in a photo but it's not handy now.  That would be great in concept - if some semblance or hint of the old Taylor Arcade is brought back to life - even if it doesn't have any retail at all.

this is the "historic corridor"  i have talked about.  Titans Gym is taking over the "left" storefront and the talked about market would be the 7,000 sqft on the right of the corridor.  I think they subdivided the right one to put a small shop in also.

lionmilk, why the change of heart?

Construction really can not start in my space until the K&D leasing office opens on the Euclid side.  I think the date for that is sometime in October.  I think we can start doing some prep work on the area behind the temp leasing office soon, and also work in the basement portion soon.  As for January 1st, im going to say no.  I think were are looking more mid-end of February honestly.  I will be sure to post when I have a better idea

In trying to respond to my own question, asking exactly where the Taylor Arcade had been, I referred to my own article on the history of the complex.  One photo is of the original facade of the department store.  With the two entrances on Euclid, I'm assuming the entrance toward the west led into the Arcade, which incidentally was only one floor. However, it would have been very near the Colonial Arcade.

A photo showing the Prospect Avenue side of the complex, however, shows a building with a Hough Bakery located where the parking garage currently is situated.  This had a canopy or porte-cochere which looks like it could have led to the Arcade, but I'm assuming the Taylor Arcade was with the actual terra-cotta faced Department Store - right?  I know by the 'ate '20s some of the Arcade shops had been incorporated into the department store, as also was done some time with Higbee's and an arcade in the Terminal complex - e.g. men's department, optical.

tripspapa - Okay, I see your post where you mention "rebuilding" this corridor.  I saw it very quickly and didn't notice details, other than there was an attractive sculptural effects on the walls.  You're saying this corridor is actually old, and it has an old floor?  Again, I don't believe the old Taylor Arcade was in this location; what else could it have been?  Or is it actually entirely new?

Actually, I see in my old photo of the original Taylor Arcade it appears to have had a glass ceiling, so I don't really know how that would have fit into the configuration of the complex.

it is my understanding that the corridor is the origional "main corridor" of the building.  K&D too every effort to restore the history of this hallway.  seems it was covered up by other flooring and ceilings and the arches and tarrazzo flooring were "found" during the demo.  yes, floor and ceilings were all patched, not built.  they spent alot of time restoring the floor (as best a 100+ year old floor can be) and the arch-ways. i think it looks very nice.  sadly, i do not know anything about the Taylor Arcade, sorry...

Does anyone know if the prospect side of the building shares the 668 Euclid address with the Euclid side?

If not it would always be confusing and a nuisance, considering the name of the apartment complex.  Obviously the storefronts have Prospect addresses.

After some digging this is what I found out.  The address of the Taylor Arcade was 646 Euclid Avenue.  The entrance that K&D is using for their main entry from the Prospect side was actually the original entrance corridor to the Prospect Theatre.  This building originally known as the Clarence Building, was purchased by the W. Taylor & Sons department store in the 1930's.  The original W. Taylor & Sons Dept store building on Euclid for what it's worth was built in 1906.  From the Prospect side the Taylor Arcade entrance would have been one window bay east of the prospect theatre entrance and ran all the way to the front of the W. Taylor & Sons Dept store building.  The arcade was completely demolished during the conversion to the Atrium Office plaza.  Luckily K&D was able to preserve and reuse what was left of the prospect theatre entrance, to create a new arcade of sorts.

lionmilk, why the change of heart?

Why do you think it is? :)

You tell me

McCleveland - Yes, that makes some sense. I was hoping some of the original Taylor Arcade could be resuscitated, even if a total rebuild with entirely new materials, but that had no priority with the developer nor would I expect it to. The three arcades were really very close together.

Has anyone heard anything about the restaurant that is going to be in the building?  I heard they're going to serve 3 meals a day which would obviously be a nice perk.  I wonder if they'll have outdoor seating.

^ The restaraunt has been discussed in this thread.  Try the search function.  It is a French-American restaraunt I believe and its name starts with a "Z" I think.  It will have an outdoor patio and bar in the alley.

The name was Zigig I think.

I think the name of the restaurant has been reported both as "Zinc" and "Zig", so who knows...

Interesting finds lafont -- both the excerpt from the book and the postcard.  I had no idea there was a theatre there before the Prospect side of the 668 was built.  Thanks for posting.

The restaraunt is named Zinc.  there is supposed to be a lot of outdoor seating near the atrium.  I have heard dome good things about the menu layout.  i know theyre supposed to serve breakfast thru dinner.  I didnt realize this would be so big, is there no place to get breakfast downtown?

There are places (such as the one on Huron), but I wouldn't say there's an abundance.

Hmm.  well, then, another shameless plug that Titan Up Cafe does serve many different EGG WHITE OMELETS!!!  and COFFEE

I know plenty of people who will want to take advantage of that tripspapa.  There really aren't that many healthy breakfast options around.

About that "historic corridor" again - will one be able to get to it from Euclid?  That would be really nice, rather than its just being off Prospect.

That corridor will have access to the atrium.  And will allow you to pass from Euclid to Prospect via the atrium which will be open to the public... But the "historic" secition is only on the prospect side.

The corridor will connect with the atrium coming from Prospect.  That corridor doesn't and never did exist off the euclid side.  The corridor is actually in the separate "clarence building" that was simply combined with the taylor & sons building in the 1930's.  Entering the Atrium to cut through to prospect the public will have access to titans gym, their cafe, the french restaurant, and the market, plus any other retail that comes out of this.

Yes, though actually Taylor's took over the Clarence Building in 1923 and remodeled it into its men's department.  In 1928 Taylor's took over the Mid-Arcade Building at 615-39 Prospect, which extended its Prospect frontage to the Colonial Arcade.  The $15-18 million store and new arcade envisioned by Taylor's around 1928 would have involved demolishing both these annexes, while adding a 17-storey tower.  When thsi didn't materialize the store started incorporating parts of the Taylor Arcade into its store.

This corridor off Prospect looks pretty nice (mainly because it's got the decoration and proportions one would expect with a ca. 1910 building). I just had no idea anything like that was in there.

Sounds like when the complex is finished there will be no way for the public to walk from Euclid to the atrium.  Is that correct?  How does the atrium space relate to the atrium that was in the Atrium Office Plaze?  Totally rebuilt?  It would be a real shame if one couldn't get to the atrium from Euclid, although I'm glad it will be connected indirectly with Prospect, anyway.

Anyone on this forum move into one of the new apartments yet?

Here are some pics of the progress at 668.  On the one hand, still a long way to go; on the other, such a vast improvement already!
