I don't know. Do you think it's not going to happen?

Not sure, but I would think the most advantageous time to have built it would have been when they were putting up the metal studs for the Euclid facade.

what's a caddy shack, outside of a movie I hate?

^ Golf Simulator/Sports bar.  Includes its own pro shop so has a bit different take on the standard sports bar.

Interesting. thanks.

Too bad. A small store would have fit perfectly.

Btw... I echo Lafont's sentiment. As much as I like this project....that window scene is a huge disappointment. I was expecting something that would add or exude lots of life. But, I guess its a dead subject now...just like the feeling the windows exude.

I was asking if anyone knows when Zinc is set to open, but a workman told me the date is June 21st. I suppose one won't be able to get into the atrium until then.  Too bad.

I don't know what was expected, but no creative firm like Wyse is going to set up their workspace so that any of their workproduct (as seen on nice 27 inch Mac monitors, plasma displays, etc) is visible by passers-by on the sidewalk..

Nobody is asking for cubicle views, but they could have done something nicer with their windows.  Even just displays or interesting artwork/designs on the windows would be better than looking at those huts.

According to this Scene magazine story about Zinc from May 19th, Zinc is supposed to open this week sometime.  Also I didnt realize this was at Public Square :|?

Bites: Zinc Debut at Public Square

And more local food news

by Douglas Trattner

Making its debut next week, Zinc Bistro, Bar and Bakery (668 Euclid Ave., 216-583-9462, zinccleveland.com) is the most ambitious opening between Public Square and the PlayhouseSquare in a long time.

You wanted accuracy?  What part of "free newspaper" don't you get?

We were discussing just that point.......  However, look up-thread a bit and see why many do not think it makes sense to occupy such a space if the desire is not to be seen. If one wants privacy, don't move to a nudist colony.

We're going in circles on the Wyse window front thing, here, folks.

I read on cleveland.com that these 668 residences are almost at full occupancy.  Is that true?

I heard 96% rented the other day.  That includes some units that have been reserved and aren't even completed yet.

Here are a handful of shots of the new patio area.  I actually think it looks halfway decent back where Zinc is located.  The entry canopy... eesh.  Doug Price must really like this look, looks very similar to what is on the viaduct by Stonebridge.  Doesn't do much for me.  The Zinc sign isn't bad.  The "Zinc" is back lit at night and the bottom text illuminates.

Thank you for the pics.  Was curious.

Would have liked more interesting lighting.

Very nice.. I could picture  the mural hanging in the back with the department store tribute!

It does look nice.  I think this might be the biggest patio downtown, as long as you don't consider Shooters part of downtown....

Thanks for posting those!  Looks like a pleasant spot back there.  I hope K&D or the restaurateur are thinking about doing something with those various brick walls though, especially that one in back which looks to be brand new.  For once I'll patient and wait for them to finish before critiquing.

I dont think it looks that bad.  the area looks much better than I thought it would be.

That entry canopy thing is atrocious.

It would be cool if they could put some murals in there. It would brighten the space up.

Sometimes you can't do mural with historic tax credits.

^They could probably do something with the new brick building in the back though.  That is the dullest brick box ever built.  But perhaps they have some budget treatments still up their sleeve.  The view from the terrace is kind of funny- there's patchy historic brick, brand new bland brick, brick color-painted old (but not historic) brick...  Can't tell if the terrace is made from real pavers or if it's just stamped and dyed concrete (i.e., fake brick).

As relieved as I am to see that the space isn't total garbage, I would still rather have the Dollar Bank building back.

I believe it is "fake brick"

I like the eclectic mix of old and new.  It's very unique.

Matchy-matchy isn't always best.

Lot of interesting character in the older walls.

Are they going to have to put a gate up on the Zinc patio to comply with liquor laws?

They shouldn't.  None of the other patios Downtown have a gate.

well whether they are required or not, they do... you can actually see it in the pics above.

Where?  I don't see any gate.

totally missed that it was a gate, I thought it was just more fencing that stuck out.

:P

I was just joking around because I actually missed it the first time through the photos, too.

Perhaps they could shine lights up onto it, so that it would at least look cool at night.  Lights shining upward could play well off the texture of the brick.

My brother works at Wyse and went to some sort of preview night at Zinc last night.  Said it was pretty nice and that they should open in two weeks.

Asked the guard inside the entrance off new "park" if one would soon be able to walk through there to Prospect and he said never.  I said I had heard one will be able to walk from street to street, via the atrium and he said no. He also said they're two separate buildings, and that's why the public would never be able to walk through.

I saw individuals in the bar but assumably they were workers.  Read Zinc will open June 3rd for dinner and suppose that is when bar will open to public? The guard didn't seem to know that much, anyway; when I mentioned "atrium" he said he thinks "we're in it."  Then he said maybe the atrium I heard about is "over there" - i.e. Colonial Marketplace. I said no - there had been the large atrium for many years in the Atrium Office Plaza and I thought a new "atrium" would be at least part of that space. As an employee of Zinc had told me maybe a week-and-a-half ago the restaurant wouldn't be opening 'til June 21st, I'd say there seems to be quite a bit of confusion as to communication.

The guard also said the public is not really supposed to walk in where I did except to go to the restaurant - that it's just for the apartment people.  I thought just that hallway off Euclid is just for them.  Oh well....

Sounds like The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue need better security and to better coordinate communications.

I toured Titan's Gym this past weekend, and the place is HUGE and top-of-the-line.  Open 24hrs, validated parking, brand new EVERYTHING, free fitness classes, $40 a month, and discounts on things like tanning for members.

This place is just what downtown needed.  My girlfriend signed up today and another girl already told me she's going to sign up within the next few weeks.  After much thought, I've decided I too will be getting a membership...and over Cleveland State, mostly because of the 24 hr access.

Where is the parking located?

I'm renting at 668.  The atrium is right behind Zinc and it's courtyard from Euclid avenue. It's what I would call the center of the complex.  They have a few tables set up as overflow seating for the restaurant. Technically, Zinc is part of the atrium, as there are 10 foot walls with crown moulding that separate the back half of the restaurant from the rest of the atrium (whose ceiling and skylights are at least 20 feet high).

When walking to the atrium from the Prospect-side hallway, your feet are about level with the top of those separating walls to the restaurant, and you descend 12 steps or so to get to the atrium level where you can access the courtyard, restaurant, or Euclid. It's a bit akward-looking before going down those steps, as you can see down into the restaurant over those separating walls (there is no faux ceiling or anything) and the tops of the mouldings are open with the accent lighting exposed.  The back room of the gym has the same overhead view.

As far as walking between Prospect and Euclid, residents have rfid cards which open the residential access doors on each side.  However, you also need those cards to access the elevator rooms, and the stairwell doors are locked to the outside (one-way access).  So technically, they could remove keycard access on those street-facing doors and access to the apartments would still be restricted to residents.  I assume this was intentional to allow for the eventual public access to all the businesses from either side of the building.  But who knows, maybe it's just super-double-security-9/11.

For now, if you really want to get through during business hours, I would just walk in to Caddyshack or Zinc from the street and there are doors to exit to the inside of the building.  Of course the ethics of walking through and not buying anything are questionable.

The screen name sizzlinbeef is making me hungry, hahaha.  Welcome!

I've spent parts of the past few weekends at 668.  Definitely very nice, though it's a bit tricky for someone like myself who was there to visit friends because of the double-security.  The courtyard area of Zinc is pretty cool and the gym looks amazing.

Wow, murray hill.  Thanks for the good sales pitch, we are deff trying to to betop of the line in everything, and id like to say we are only 60% full of what we want to do there.  I hope to be bring a great fitness atitude to the cleveland area.  As for parking, we are now allowed to validate parking from 5-8am, and 5-9 pm and on weekends.  That's about as free as you get downtown, and I hear out neighbors started charging for their members, so hopefully that helps us.  I'm glad you liked the place!  Please introduce yourself when your thru!

^ We certainly need better fitness lifestyles..... Right on!

Those middle two interior pics are not flattering and not what i would have expected from such a classy job on the exterior.  Am i correct to assume that historic tax credits are more about exterior standards than interior standards?

^Yes.  Otherwise we'd have an empty department store space at 668 Euclid.  But I agree it's kind of a jolt to see what looks like an entirely new building on the interior.

Thanks sizzlin' for the shots!

I dont think it looks that bad.  Given the price point.  If there were greater details in the cooridors, then the price point would need to increase to justify that work, then people would be complaining that the price point for the building is too high.

^I hear ya- I didn't mean to say I thought it looked bad, I think it's fine.  I only meant that it is at first unexpected to see such normal modern finishes inside after only seeing the outside for so long; though given the state of the building and the scope of the project, of course the interior is all new.

Thanks for the shots and reference map sizzlin!

Photos show hallway "from Euclid" but the public can't enter from Euclid - only the apartment people. What about that one door in the center of the Wyse windows?  Beyond the door one can only (barely) see a bland stairway going up - all dingy. Looks like a storage area. A dumb view for the Euclid Corridor in the hear of downtown - lots of potential wasted.

Meanwhile, I see at lunch hour the sign says "OPEN" for Zinc!  I had not time to go in but I had read not 'til tomorrow - at least dinner only.
