I thought "the Mayor" said there was a balcony for the 2nd floor of the building.  so either they are keeping and doing some adaptive reuse on it or bringing it down and rebuilding one.

the balconies (really patios) will be on the east side of the building.  There will be a canopy, though i don't know if it's completely brand new or just a rework of this one.  It will have large glass pyramid type skylights in it.  The main rendering that was recently released (and shown in this thread) shows it pretty clearly.

K&D must be trying to save money, going with the lowest bids, which does not surprise me one bit considering who we are referencing.  Not saying 668 won't turn out immaculate, it might, but it is clear from living in at least one of their other properties, they try and skimp wherever they can.

With as big a role as K&D and Doug Price are playing in downtown's residential rebirth, I can only hope my experience is the exception and not the norm.

haha thx mccleveland -- thats priceless!

it appears as if they are doing some work on the canopy... also they have set up a full blown construction office in one of the storefronts on the Prospect side.  You can also see a TON of demo work that has been done through those windows.

Mayor McCleveland, thanks for all your photos and updates. Awesome stuff!

I pray that renovations of this building and the other buildings along the corridor don't mess up the paver's!  I couldn't resist.

I'm sure this has been pointed out on these boards already, but it's as if all the fake banners hung during the Spiderman shoot became magically self-fulfilling.

^time to put up some real banners and let the developers give downtown workers and visitors a reason to believe in Cleveland. ;)

AMEN!

Sure, if they screw them up, it's only our tax money that's involved!!!!!

LOL I'm sure removal and replacement would be (or at least I hope it's) built in the overall budget of the project.

Maybe Forest City could chip in for once

As long as they are world class banners

1.  Well I don't know about "world class banners"... but the people at 668 have at least updated their space available signs in the storefront to show the rendering of the building.  If nothing else, joe exurban might notice something is happening now when they walk by.

2.  Also, it looks like they have begun work on the interior demoltion on the former dollar bank building.

3.  Demolition by ramming pick up trucks into the foyer?

Still saddened that the dollar bank building is going the way of the dodo, but nice to see work progressing on this project.

As long as the parking lot to the east is built upon sooner rather than later, we won't even notice the demolished Dollar Bank Building.

that's a good one.

FWIW here's what I know about that property.  It is still owned by the same jerk who knocked the hippodrome to the ground.  He is about 986 years old.  He has been waiting about 35 years for the "right opportunity" to develop that property.  He is probably going to deed the property to his kids, and there has been no indication that they are anxious to do anything.  I've never heard a whisper about this property getting developed... not one.  Apparently they are happy enough with the income the parking garage / surface lots bring in.

Agree on both counts.  Seems like such a waste though.  Then again, maybe the newly exposed blank brick west side of the redeveloped 668 bldg and the landscaped driveway will make me forget all about Dollar Bank.

Yeah, I've got to say that considering how hot they are to get rid of Dollar Bank I assumed that they planned to punched in some windows or balconies in that brick wall.

  • 2 weeks later...

They're really moving with the Prospect Ave. storefronts.  One storefront-from what I was able to see-has some nice vaulted ceilings and extends deep into the building.

I can't wait to hear what retail tenants are lined up for this building!

i wouldn't get too excited... from what I hear the retail for the 668 project as all aimed at service sector... i.e. drycleaners, etc.  which while maybe not exciting is the types of things needed to move the residential base forward.

Actually, that is the kind of retail that most excites me. It makes our city liveable.

i completely agree with you... i just want people to understand what is coming so they don't expect one thing and get disapointed that it's something different.

I agree especially on the Prospect side.  As the Street all the way up to CSU has a great vibe and potential.  Neighborhood stores mixed in with restaurants and one or two "activities" would really keep the street vibrant and alive and be a benefit to those currently living there and potential residents and hotel guests.

I think it would feel of Montague Street in Brooklyn Hts.; the Fulton mall in Downtown BK; Chicago Ave in Chicago; Conn Ave (near dupont) in DC; or Market Street East in Philly.

i will be happy so long as mike the hatter is still there!

Cle... that vaulted ceiling is an original part of the building and is going to be restored... it will go all the way through to the atrium.  Everything else has just been gutted.

Get ready to say bye bye to the dollar bank building... last night they fenced it off in preperation for deconstruction.

View of the dollar bank building (and it's gull wing canopy) from the back alley... I'm still going to miss this thing.

That first pic is amazing.  Wow!

i've always loved the view from that alley.

Does anyone have a current street view picture of the Dollar Bank building. ( Please No Google rooftop)

I can't see a thing.

Farewell and adieu to my fair dollar bank...

A shame.  It's a nice piece of modern architecture.  And all this so that we can have a new garage below 668, which already has an attached garage, and is next to another garage surrounded by surface parking.  What a waste.

I agree... they could have been some kick ass condos on Euclid.  They even could have done away with the first floor and had open air access into a plaza in the rear... sigh.

I would honestly love to hear Mr. Price's thoughts on this, because it really does seem to be such a needless loss of architecture, streetscape and redevelopable square footage.  I am going to hate that gap every time I walk by it.

Maybe when the project is finished it will make more sense (even though I'm sure I'll never agree with it).

I think simply... everyone was afraid that some loud cry for preservation of the dollar bank building would have jeopardized the project.  And no one wanted to jeopardize this project... and i did heare some "concessions" were made on another project that basically made everyone swallow their tongue on this one.

^Very interesting.  I can only guess what that other project was...

In all seriousness, I wish I had tried to organize a group of investors a few years ago when the Dollar Bank bldg was on the market for only a million bucks.  With the ECP underway and the historic tax credits (helpful for nearby buildings) working their way through the legislature, Euclid was only going to get hotter.

Are you implying there could have been a large parking lot in place of 668????  I think I may have puked and moved to Medina.

No  :)

they presented (as developers always do) as... we have to do it this way or it won't work.  I think everyone was afraid if they pushed the preservation of dollar bank too much they would have walked away from the project and 668 would still be for sale, rotting, and holding both Euclid and Prospect avenues ransom with it's horridness.

I can't help but ask, why are they tearing this down now that Euclid is reopening versus when it was closed?

because they didn't close on the building until june.  i think they only waited this long, because they needed the sidewalk on the north side open to divert traffic.

It's amazing how weeds will grow anywhere.

Nice shot, thanks!

So are they gonna start working on the 668 facade after the Dollar Bank building is demolished?  I seem to recall mayor mcc saying something about them wanting to finish before winter???

Man, that thing's looking ugly...knock it down already!  Is it safe to assume they're saving the stone facade,by the way they are taking it off??

Thanks for the pics Mayday!
