December 4, 200717 yr ahh, reminds me of home. Wow, just bad. Great photos though. Except that you are a COPYCAT!!!! Took the same image last winter.
December 4, 200717 yr That's just devastating. We in America have far too many cities and areas of cities that look like Gary. How can a nation be great when it lets this happen to its cities, which are the confluences of brains and braun of a country? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 4, 200717 yr Because of this. Wah! I want a large backyard! I want a driveway! I want more room from my neighbors! I want a larger house! And more room! And look at that, you're crammed in there like shotgun houses.
December 4, 200717 yr Wow. The most amazing thing is seeing a well-kept house owned by somebody who obviously has a lot of pride sitting right next door to rubble.
December 4, 200717 yr Always makes me think of "The Music Man" and the song "Gary, Indiana"! Love the first photo of the Palace Theatre and the Jackson Five tonite letters on the marquee. I did wonder where they were going to play on their comeback tour! But seriously - these Gary photos are simply stunning.
December 5, 200717 yr Because of this. Wah! I want a large backyard! I want a driveway! I want more room from my neighbors! I want a larger house! And more room! And look at that, you're crammed in there like shotgun houses. You forgot, "I want my kids to go to a school where they'll get a good education and be in a safe environment!"
December 19, 200717 yr You forgot, "I want my kids to go to a school where they'll get a good education and be in a safe environment!" At the level of an individual family, fleeing to a school district shielded by various means from the effects of poverty makes sense, but a metropolitan system of have and have-not school districts certainly does not make sense.
February 19, 200916 yr Gotta love Gary! (followed the link from the Dayton thread and this is absolutely stunning. It really makes me appreciate the Gem city) However, for a city that in its heyday had about 200,000 people (or so....?), I'm suprised it's not more dense. Great shots!
February 19, 200916 yr ^Sad photos. Is that City Hall with the dome? Also, tried to look at your Cleveland/Akron photos and the photos would not appear. Maybe something with my computer?
February 19, 200916 yr This commercial strip doesn't look that bad, especially compared to much of the rest. If only East Columbus' strip looked like this, it'd be quite an improvement. It's funny how many buildings are severely dilapidated, but the road is nicely paved and painted while people spend money on decent cars.
February 20, 200916 yr It's funny how many buildings are severely dilapidated, but the road is nicely paved and painted while people spend money on decent cars. I think that's true for all "ghettos". It applies around Dayton, at least.
February 20, 200916 yr I think the presence of buildings, not empty lots help improve the image of that commercial strip.
February 21, 200916 yr I dont think Gary passed 200,000. It was 100,000 + but never topped 200K. (anyone have better figures?). But I have to say even in decay Gary still looks substantial. It looks they were using "Chicago buildings"...the details and building forms look a lot like neighborhood stuff in Chicago for some of this. @@@ I think the city earmarks revenue from their casinos for road improvements and repairs, so that might be why the roads look good. Is that City Hall with the dome? Yes, and there is a twin next to it which is a branch of the Lake County courthouse. So there is this "city beautiful" group plan thing going on in front of downtown. That's what you would have seen if you had arrived by rail.
February 21, 200916 yr The only place I've ever been "eh, not using it THIS time" was actually in Pendleton (Cincinnati) of all places. Sections of the Bronx I put the camera away along with East Los Angeles. But generally, "the hood" isn't too bad once you know it (or lived in it). February 21, 200916 yr Wow! Parts of Gary look like they were just bombed and left to lie in ruin. Great photo tour.
