Yikes- this doesn't sound good.  I'm sure they'll find a way out...or another authority's bonding capacity, but still not so encouraging.

City of Cleveland faces credit squeeze

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said today that he and top advisers are working to stave off a money crunch that could jeopardize large capital projects on the horizon....

^^ Nice. A free plug of advertisement. We appreciate the love, Bob!

Check out the post by 3bob1977, folks - we've officially been called out by the same troll who perks up here and on tremonter.com! What a sad f#ck.

And one of the biggest projects is only 13 years behind Cleveland's. Way to go burgh! (in response to the poster, I happen to like the burgh).

Had I not been introduced to UrbanOhio, I too would have thought you should give up on Cleveland.  As I've stated before, I've learned more here than I have from the Plain Dealer or Cleveland.com.  Thanks again everyone.

Wow, that has got to be the most positive comments I have ever read regarding our city on a PD/Cleveland.com article.

Very nice to see.

And excellent props to us - we rock!

^ It always amuses me how the people who spew info with no accurate fact behind them never reply when they are called out themselves.  Gotta love the trolls.

I know the pd is written on a 5th grade level but can someone explain what the impact of this is in a couple sentences?

Council ready to tackle credit crunch ... if members get a piece of the action

City Council members are willing to help Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson find enough dough to keep public improvement projects rolling.

But a sticking point could be how large their slice of the pie will be.

• Catch up on the story's background with previous Plain Dealer reports.A battered real estate market and other drains on tax revenue will prevent the city from taking on more debt in 2008, Jackson said Tuesday. The city's crippled ability to borrow money could jeopardize big developments designed to revitalize downtown, as well as new roads, bridges, recreation centers and other projects.

I wasn't sure where to put this.  Since the funding for these developments appears to be Frank's answer to the "credit crunch," I thought I'd post it here, but it could probably go in "Random Cleveland Developments" or "Mayor Jackson and development in Cleveland."  Please move this if appropriate.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson proposes $60 million for improvements

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Henry J. Gomez

Plain Dealer Reporter

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson wants to spend $60 million this year on improvements that range from recreation for the Collinwood neighborhood to curbs and sidewalks for downtown development.

Also on the agenda: $1.5 million to launch a nonemergency complaint hot line for residents, $6 million to demolish vacant homes and more than $10 million for a new accounting system.

I happy with his decisions.  I'd also like to thank former mayor campbell for cleaning up the departments within city hall and the City's finances.

I don't want 6M to go to demolition of homes.  I think finding the owners and forcing them to pay a portion would make me happy.

How about some good news

Jackson foresees '09 without layoffs, tax hikes

Plain Dealer Reporters

Mayor Frank Jackson said Thursday that he expects Cleveland to balance its 2009 budget without layoffs, tax increases or cuts in services -- despite the financial malaise plaguing other Ohio cities.

Jackson said at a City Hall briefing that his budget projections are a "work in progress." But he said cost-cutting moves imposed during his term should allow the city to avoid more severe measures.

Great news about the city's finances.  Lots of places are getting whacked and hard.

I wish more of the money went to neighborhood improvements such as more trees, landscaping, home repairs, weatherization etc.  I like improving rec centers.

I don't know how, but there needs to be some subsidies for businesses to open up on the east side, especially on the St. Clair corridor.

Is that enough money to fix up bridges?
