Cleveland’s Pierre’s Ice Cream sold to Ohio-based dairy manufacturer

Updated: Apr. 11, 2022, 4:31 p.m. | Published: Apr. 11, 2022, 4:23 p.m.

By Sean McDonnell, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Pierre’s Ice Cream, a Cleveland-based company for 90 years, is being sold to another dairy manufacturer based in central Ohio.

Pierre’s on Monday afternoon announced the purchase agreement with Ohio Processors Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of dairy-related products headquartered in London, about 25 miles west of Columbus. Pierre’s spokesperson Laura Hindulak said the sale is expected to close in the second quarter. Terms of the deal will not be disclosed, she said.

The company marked its 90th birthday about a month ago.  In 2011 Pierre’s opened a 35,000 square-foot factory near East 65th Street and Euclid Avenue.

It seems like Cleveland is always on the wrong end of acquisitions and that always frustrates me.

So this permit is for the long shuttered University Inn. Looks like it will carry the Delta by Marriot flag. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Glad for the renovation but I was hoping they would have just demoed and started over. Also I wonder what the status is of the dream hotel across the street. Its still on Dreams website as "coming"

Permits filed for the food truck park at 7412 Carnegie. Shows it will be a $75,000 investment. Chusa Contractors with Derrick Childs of Container Homes USA (that's what Chusa is) as the contact.

What necessarily is a food truck park? What’s the difference between that and what they do during Walnut Wednesday?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I googled food truck park...

I googled food truck park...

So you replied. But instead of answering the question you were ignorant. I googled the same thing and got parks from Houston and saw their plans but the Cleveland story from biz journal was vague and didn’t provide details. The parks could vary by city but I thought that was common sense. If I ask on here that means I couldn’t find the answer on google…

It might be similar to this:

http://lakewoodtruckpark.com/

The combination of both indoor and outdoor cuisine would be pretty cool, especially since we aren’t warm year round like Houston which had a midtown food truck park but it was strictly outdoors. It allows it to be an all year attraction.

I live around the corner from the Lakewood Food Truck park. It seems to be very popular although the number and quality of food trucks available does seem to be lacking. When I asked people working there about that they always have some version of "Working on it."

A building permit has been posted for the Masonic Auditorium. It describes the project in two phases, with the first being MEP work for the auditorium only. The second phase will be the remainder of the building for the same type of work. The amount of the first phase is for 3.5m which is a good amount of money. It lists Biolosky as the architect who also designed the proposed Dream Hotel, which btw Cleveland is still listed as a future project on the Dream website.

Seeds & Sprouts XXIV — Masonic reno, Data center grows, E. 89th apts, Uptown fitness

By Ken Prendergast / May 26, 2022

The 2,300-seat, 101-year-old Cleveland Masonic Auditorium, 3615 Euclid Ave., is about to enter a second phase of renovations. But a proposed 19-story hotel tower next door remains a distant, albeit alive proposal. Owner TempleLive Cleveland LLC, an affiliate of Beaty Capital Group of Fort Smith, AR, plans $3.5 million worth of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) renovations to the property it acquired in 2017, according to permit applications submitted this week to the city. Cleveland Construction is the general contractor.

"Land Energy, the electric vehicle and battery startup in Cleveland, confirmed on Wednesday that it plans to move its bike-making operations to the former Accurate Plating site in Cleveland's MidTown technology district. Built between 1913 and 1930, the building at 6512 Carnegie Ave., which once housed Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. and then plating and warehouse operations, was approved for a $2.2 million brownfield remediation grant from the state last week."

Are the new buildings south of Euclid on that site plan new to this this overall plan?  I don't remember seeing them before.

Hey @KJP  don't want to be pushy but how about an article on this project since the Cleveland.com article is a subscriber exclusive.  First thoughts...finally, I have been waiting for this one.  Thought it would be announced a lot sooner than this.  Two, since I cannot read the article, I don't know the square footage of the building but from the renderings it looks smaller than I thought it would be.  I was imagining at least 5 stories and more in the 300-350 square foot range...although quite truthfully I don't know why those figures are in my head.

Again, I cannot tell since I cannot read the article but I hope they are canning or at least modifying the proposed parking garage next to the building so that the portion fronting East 66th is not a garage facade but offices or something (similar to that huge Clinic garage).  It would be horrible to have a large half block long dead space, especially given the major plans to re-do East 66th all the way into Hough (by the way what is the status of those plans...seems like they were before Planning Commission months and months ago)

I can't tell.  Is what's labeled UH RBC on the map really Link 59?

Edited by urb-a-saurus

It’s alright guys, the half a block of parking is only labeled as temporary! At Cleveland’s famed swift pace in development, that lot should be redeveloped in less than 45 years… *🦗🦗*BE5EADEE-2597-4ABB-998F-A3462D91FAFC.jpeg.1ffe36c6224c5caa7a1792d21fd5a8e1.jpeg*

Great a "temporary" surface lot right on Euclid.  Like noted above...temporary surface lot in Cleveland means multiple decades.  Planning Commission better nix this.  I would rather see a grassed lot.  Although what do you think the odds are given it is the Cleveland Foundation.  Let's see August Flucker get up in arms about this like he did with the UC town homes demo.  Is it illegal for UO to set up a betting pool? Bets on which "temporary parking lot" will last the longest?  This one or the one next to the SHW headquarters at the corner of Superior and East 6th.

A new Crain's article by Michelle (again long and enlightening) provided me with the answer to my question (above ) as to why the new building next to the Cleveland Foundation is smaller than I thought (it is now going to be 95,000 square feet rather than in the 200,000-250,000 square foot range which would have been more of presence on Euclid which is sorely needed in my opinion-Midtown really needs a large anchor).  Apparently Wexford Science and Technology, the Baltimore company the Foundation was partnering with as part of its master plan for the area has walked away from the project and the Foundation is going alone to at least build this first building.  The article has Foundation leaders painting a positive picture regarding the future of this development but I have to imagine that Wexford parting ways has to be a huge disappointment.   The downsizing of the building is a disappointment to me.  Hopefully new developers can step in down the road to complete the vision sooner rather than later.

GE may demolish historic factory, incubator in Cleveland

By Ken Prendergast / September 13, 2022

A sprawling factory complex on Cleveland’s near-East Side that incubated many lighting, industrial and transportation innovations is proposed to be demolished by its owner of the last 130 years, General Electric (GE). The Design Review Committee of Cleveland’s City Planning Commission will hear a presentation this week by GE’s engineering consultant Stantec on why it should approve demolition of the factory, called the Euclid Lamp Plant, 1814 E. 45th St. But not everyone agrees the factory has to be razed before the property can be sold by GE.

A big loss for Cleveland’s Atlas Obscura page.

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/land-of-the-warres

What could be the potential cost of demolition and site remediation? wouldn't it surpass the potential sale price afterward? That leads me to believe property taxes and future potential legal actions are the bigger picture. Could they donate the entire property for tax benefit and let someone else save the structures or remediate the site? Our tax dollars have been spent on worse.

donate to non-profit, sell to land bank, use brownfield and federal dollars to remediate, sell to or partner with developer?

I obviously don't know the extent of any industrial contamination, but this is one of the most historically significant industrial sites in Northern Ohio, and the fact that it still exists in 2022 is a feat in itself. I learned the history of this site 10+ years ago and have been waiting for it to be repurposed along with a few other fascinating building in that industrial neighborhood. If contamination hasn't seeped into the soil on site, I don't think the levels in the structures could be so high as to abandon hope for saving the structures. I have seen enough brownfield remediation success stories to question this situation.

But yea, mercury is no joke, and a 7 acre clean urban site ready for a new use could bring jobs and vitality in excess to saving what's there. It just wouldn't feel as special.

These are the types of buildings that give Cleveland a unique post-industrial character.  I hope the city doesn't simply take GE at its word about contamination, but instead does an independent analysis of whether the structures can be saved.  These buildings would be beautiful to convert to apartments or live/work space.  There have been too many buildings like this torn down for empty lots that sit idle for years.

I totally get that Mercury is nasty (although it didn’t stop me and my mother chasing it around our kitchen floor with our fingers in the mid-70s when she accidentally smashed a thermometer), but surely this building can and should be saved and repurposed. To lose such an imposing structure and footprint would be awful.

I don't trust GE at all. I used to live in Erie and they'd tear down structures all over their GE Transportation site to lower their tax burden. It's nothing more than a shuffling of the books in their minds.

Foundry Lofts has a really great street presence on Euclid - I passed it on the HealthLine today, though I didn’t get a chance to take any photos.

Phase 2 sought for Midtown apartment complex
By Ken Prendergast / December 14, 2022

With the paint still drying on the first phase of a mixed-use development called The Foundry Lofts, 7240 Euclid Ave., Signet Real Estate Group is asking the city for approvals to begin construction on an apartments-only phase two. The reason for moving forward so quickly on the expanding Midtown Cleveland development is because both residential and commercial leasing activity for the first phase have been strong.
