Cleveland City Council moves on financial package for Dave's Markets new store on Chester

CLEVELAND, Ohio - City Council took steps Wednesday to aid Dave's Markets in building a store on Chester Avenue between East 61st and East 63rd streets that will replace its flagship store on Payne Avenue.

 

In separate action, council also took steps to aid Simon's Supermarket to move into a Buckeye Road storefront that was vacated by Giant Eagle earlier this year.

 

Dave's Markets confirmed this spring it planned to leave the store at Payne Avenue in AsiaTown to move into an emerging business park on Chester Avenue.

AEG takes over historic Agora Theatre on Friday

 

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The long-rumored takeover of the historic Agora Theatre and Ballroom by concert giant AEG Presents is now a fact.

Zitterbart will remain with the facility, which has a theater capacity of 2,100 and a ballroom capacity of 600, as an employee of AEG, which is adding the Agora to the more than 60 venues it owns or operates nationwide.

Neither Trell nor Zitterbart would reveal the financial terms of the deal, but plans are to renovate the historic theater originally run by Agora founder Henry LoConti Sr. - including upgrades of the building itself as well as its HVAC and acoustic design, sound and lighting systems.

However, Trell did say that AEG plans repairs and renovations that will reach into the "seven figures'' in upgrading the venerable structure, which began life in 1913 as the Metropolitan Theatre opera house and also served for a period as a home for vaudeville and burlesque.

Glad to see the venue get some much needed investment. I'm cautiously holding out hope that they suc

ceed without emulating the stuffy, overly corporate feel exuded by House of Blues. 

 

Man if I had the money I'd but up a boutique hotel right on site, just like Swingos. Each show would be a festival-type event. That's how you nurture a music culture. I'd lose a fortune, but I'd do it in the funnest way possible.

The Tru Hilton proposal for E69th and Euclid is on the Euclid Corridor Design Review Cmte's 's agenda for Thursday. Renderings for the CPC on Friday?

It's a grocery store. Most stores want as much parking as possible. I agree that adding windows would've been helpful but overall, I don't have a problem with it

The last phase Woodhaven townhomes are almost fully built. That completes Zaremba's 150-some unit development between East 81st-86th and Euclid-Chester.

 

Don't know about the Vazza development off East 73rd.

The Revenue Group Leases 69,223 SF in Midtown Cleveland

The Revenue Group, an accounts receivable management company, signed a lease for 69,223 square feet in the office building at 3711 Chester Ave. in Cleveland, OH.

 

The two-story building totals 100,395 square feet in Midtown. The property’s former owner, Dealer Tire, vacated the property in early 2017.

The Revenue Group is ironically located on Hinckley Parkway.  Isn't that where Sherwin Williams Is moving people to?

I like the fact that ~70% of the building leased so quickly. The remaining 31K sq ft are being marketed; but I wonder if The Revenue Group (medical bill collectors) plans eventually to grow into the rest of it.  TRG claims to be growing.

While on the HealthLine at the East 36th station, I noticed fencing around a couple of buildings and snapped this picture. Why is the lovely 3-story building on the right being demolished and not rehabbed! The Stockbridge Apartments (just beyond it) isn't part of whatever is happening here -- thankfully.

The owners proposed a parking lot there a couple years ago and were denied. The precedent was set a long time ago -- wait around and let the property deteriorate some more and request the demo permit again.

While on the HealthLine at the East 36th station, I noticed fencing around a couple of buildings and snapped this picture. Why is the lovely 3-story building on the right being demolished and not rehabbed!

 

Well for one thing the building is in clear violation of zoning. It's built right up to the sidewalk for crying out loud. Where's the grass? Where's the surface parking?

They must be taking the Cleveland Clinic approach.  If you don't succeed the first time, totally neglect the building for a period of time, and make sure it is open to the elements for good measure, so that the next time the request is made for demolition, it is granted due to the building being too far gone and un-salvageable..

Wake me up when Sam McNulty starts to support the arts in Cleveland a tenth as much as Scott Mueller.

 

Back on topic, the demolition listed above will be devastating for that intersection. It's already has the AIT spaceship on the other side of the street killing density, and the backside of the Masonic isn't helping either. That stretch is one of the worst for drivers pulling out of curb cuts blindly on pedestrians and cyclists.

This building doesn't fit the city's plan for the corridor.  The plan places greater value on vacant lots because it seeks a completely new type of land usage, a usage for which this otherwise highly adaptable structure is not ideal.  Bad plans lead to bad results.

Most of the time that I open development threads on this site I'm usually excited for progress, except for this one. For the most part they are blowing a major opportunity to make this a viable, sustainable neighborhood where you can live, work and play. All of these developments circle around work and go home, there are really no outside developments that allow people to stay around here after which creates a long dead zone.

Let me share some development progress with you, then. This is Geis' Link 59 development which is filling in some big holes between the growing "dual hubs" of downtown and University Circle. I hope that the owner of the terra cotta beauty just beyond Link 59 will soon feel more comfortable in removing the bricked-up windows to shed more light on this section of Euclid Avenue....

People occupying buildings, by its very nature, encourages street activity

Especially those built up to the sidewalk and having uses that are likely to interact with the HealthLine station that's right there.

Right now I'm talking about your attitude, mister.  And now I'm done. 

 

The development plan for this area is too heavy on non-public uses.  Due to their exclusionary nature, offices do not lead to much street activity even when they're open.  More often than not these buildings are entirely human-free.  Years ago I remember people wondering why the Third Federal HQ didn't help liven up Broadway, when the answer is obvious.  All it does for the pedestrian public is give them a giant thing to walk past before anything of interest appears.  Same problem here, multiplied every single time they get it wrong.

 

One medical office and one grocer are nice but wow there's a lot of parking too, and we're talking about several miles of a street where transit speed was sacrificed for density of stops.  Ten years ago!  The whole thing is poorly executed.  Just ask the pedestrians you see in those pictures.
