Iconic Images of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincy--TOP LANDMARKS

Hi All,

I am currently working at an agency out of state on some Ohio projects.  I am looking for iconic images of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincy.  As I lived in Cleveland, I feel like I have a good understanding of what those images should be...but I admit that I need assistance for C-bus & Cincinnati.

Can anyone name like the top 10 landmarks or iconic images that should be a part of each city's collage?  For example, the horseshoe and a buck for Columbus.

Thanks all!

cincinnati:

flying pig statues at saywer point

music hall

union terminal

Don't forget the Roebling Suspension Bridge (Cincy) and the Arcade (Clev).

*Basically every bridge that crosses the Cuyahoga could be part of a collage (Swing, Jack Knife, Bascule, Lift, High Level.

*Ore boat plowing up the river.

*Steel Mills

Free Stamp?? No!

Also, the Soldiers & Sailors monument in Public Square.

Doesn't anyone else think that the free stamp is cheesy and embarrassing?  C'mon people, its art. There should be some cut and dry opinions! ;)

Not as much as a collage that included this ...

A friend of mine from Columbus saw the Free Stamp for the first time, said it was horrible, and felt "it should be put in front of the welfare building" on Superior Avenue.

As for true icons, the Terminal Tower is the first choice. I hate to say it but the Rock Hall ought to be considered.

I'll add in my two cents for my alma mater & a tourist attraction - the Peter B. Lewis building, home to the Weatherhead School of Management, at Case Western Reserve University.

Yep, all those names :)

I agree.  Same with the Free Stamp.  I don't love or hate it (one of the few that doesn't have a strong opinion on it), but I guess I have to recognize it as "iconic" when it comes to Cleveland.

I'm going to be honest.  The Free Stamp may be a local landmark for Cleveland but as an outside opinion, it's definately not the first couple of landmarks that pop in my head.  I still have yet to actually see it in person.  Clearly, the Rock Hall, the Terminal Tower, the Westside Market, and even the bridges over the Cuyahoga stand out, which I'm presuming is what the thread starter is looking for.  Instant iconic images.

Anyone mention Gateway for Cleveland?

Great Lakes brewing company.

the Lake (Edgewater looking west)

a burning river (JUST KIDDING)

and FREE STAMP ROCKS!  The history of the piece of art is so cool too.  I love how its history actually changed the meaning of the artwork.

8. Belle of Cincinnati

I'm sure you mean the Delta Queen?

Oh sure, absolutely!   If it is in town,     but the Belle is really the closest thing we have to an iconic riverboat.  (Even with it's fake features)  it looks pretty cool with skyline shot behind it.  (Obviously not in this pic.)

Better Yet!      BEHOLD,    THE QUEEN IS IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm not familiar with Cleveland AT ALL, but as an outsider there are three things that I see as purely Cleveland.

1) Terminal Tower from Public Square

2) That crazy statue of the person reaching upward.  (I LOVE that statue, but have no clue what it is)

3) Those guardians on that bridge.

4) Runners up are Rock Hall and that market building (WestSide, maybe?)

Oh honey, I've been here for quite some time but thanks for the proclamation! ;-)

ajknee, the "crazy" statue is the War Memorial Fountain or 'Peace Arising from the Flames of War' - take your pick.

Ooh, yeah.  That's the one.  To me, it's an amazing sort of contemporary gothicism.  I really wish we could explore a style such as this in the architectural field.

For the Cleveland list, I'd also consider the wind turbine. While it might not have the history of some of the other landmarks mentioned, it does have a distinctive quality (personally, I've never seen a wind turbine in the CBD in any of the cities I've visited) and speaks to the overall brand image that Cleveland is trying to carve out ... an industrial city reinventing itself as a center for green technology. Moreover, local Charles Brush's wind turbine was the first example of an electricity-generating turbine in the world ... that's pretty cool.

Would the Botanical and Cultural Gardens be considered top Cleveland Landmarks?

Yea, all three C's zoos.     Does C-lands zoo include the Botanical Gardens or is it seperate?

Clevelands zoo is south of downtown (in Brooklyn or Tremont?) and the both gardens are in University Circle.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is located in Old Brooklyn and Brooklyn Centre on the Near West Side.  I think that Old Brooklyn claims it.

They list it as Cleveland.  I think it's one of those weird, small little slices that goes deep to grab something (ie how the Airport is).

It is Cleveland, Old Brooklyn and Brooklyn Centre are Cleveland neighborhoods. You are probably thinking the City of Brooklyn which is separate.

Herbavorium is an awesome word.

Cleveland -

Images (not previously listed)

- Cuyahoga Valley (at dusk)

- Old County Courthouse (front facade or the center lobby)

- Garfield's tomb (views of and from)

- The Blue Angel

AND.....

- an orange contruction barrell
