Urbanohio was suspended on our host for excessive use of server resources.  It took me FOREVER to get us unsuspended and back online.  The main reason for the excessive use of resources??? ..... this forum!   I think it is time for us to look into getting a vpn or dedicated server or another suspension will be imminent. 

For this to happen in the near future we need your help.  It has been nearly 3 years since we've asked for any help.  We will be able to put forth some of the funds needed to upgrade the server, but not nearly enough needed.  If you can donate any of your spare pennies, please send them our way.  Paypal is the best method - [email protected] is the address.

As much as we can honestly.  Most hosts require you to pay a year in advance for your hosting or they charge setup fees and higher monthly fees.  If we want a VPS at our current host, the cost for a year would be $480.  Dedicated hosting would be about double that.  If we arent able to get enough for a full year, I'll have to purchase a 6 month package at a higer cost and pay the setup fee. 

 

Also, we can accept credit cards ourself if you don't want to use paypal.

lol :lol:... too funny and true.  I kept checking back every five minutes or so while at work; I'm sure my numbers over the last couple of days will be much better.  I'll be sure to chip in... I can't handle the withdrawal.

Might be worth the effort to remove the link to the gallery and go to a very basic interface for the forum for the time being to reduce server load. Forums can generate surprisingly high amounts of load.

I've cut down the load a great deal, but it's still not enough according to the host.  I would do that with the gallery, but the gallery isnt using all the resources, it's the forum.  I've turned off guest access to the forum to help...which is why we've had about 15 people sign up today alone.

Birdie's community was bullied out of this same city exactly two years ago. I was just quoted for a dedicated box at $60 a month = $720 a year.  Not bad for our own box.

It would be interesting to do something creative as a fundraiser. Riverviewer's thought to use the advertising block with donations is a good start, maybe we could furthur develop that notion.

 

We could always do a regional contest too, but I think we all know SW Ohio is where all the money is concentrated anyway. (reaction proves contest would be effective)

Okay folks, let's kick in here.  I don't want to sound all public broadcasting like, but I now some of us spend a lot of time on the site.  Think back about how isolated, out of touch and alone you felt while the forum was down earlier this week.  Think of the money you probably spent shopping on-line because you didn't have anything else to do with your computer while the forum was down.

 

Now imagine the possibility of Christmas without Urban Ohio!  Why it would be just like coming down to the tree and finding out Santa skipped your house!
