Last night I attempted to make a back up of the entire site.  Instead of a backup occurring, everything was deleted from the server, I mean everything.   So that leaves us with the database that we had when we moved to the new server.  I feel horrible that this happend, but will make sure it does not happen again.

On a positive note, the main front page for the site looks better!

Something like that happened at a job I had.

They had moved the MIS onto some new system or something, that didnt have the same level of security or tamper-proofing.  Someone was running a query off of it and deleted the entire data file.  There was a backup, so they were able to remount the tape and rebuild, but a few days of info was lost.  So the office had to re-enter things to rebuild the lost info.

I agree on the need for a "heads up" sticky... I wondered if something bit-bucketed the system, as I knew I had some posts on Monday that seemed to vanish, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me...

Hours of my life lost....

Ewww, that really sucks. On the plus side, I think the post have dropped of in the past in week or so due to the holidays.

That's me... always looking on for the positive.

Stuff happens, man. I appreciate all the hard work you do to keep the site running as smoothly as possible. Your technical expertise and the attentiveness of the mods make UO one of the best sites dealing with urban issues.

Tough loss, but all in the name of progress at least.

If you consider losing Springfield and Hamilton (and half of Canton) progress...

Hamilton is more of a novelty item; like owning an Atari 2600 and playing Pong :)

This is very upsetting to me. I spent a good hour just last night compiling some data that I posted here on UO. And several threads are completely gone. I know you feel horrible RichNCincy, but how can this be prevented in the future?

I agree about putting a sticky on the various message boards to let folks know what happened.

Wellll, I lost quite a few posts as well so I feel your pain - and yeah it's a royal PITA (pain in the...) but honestly, Rich is doing the best he can with what he has. Given the track record (aside from the recent hiccup), this site's performance is top-notch. I've been on the skyscraperpage.com forum for almost 10 years and over there, I've probably had dozens (if not low hundreds) of posts get zapped by technical difficulties or other crap that happens during upgrades.

I'm not trying to trivialize your frustration (I feel it too - I'm not even sure WHAT posts I need to recreate) and I'm not trying to be a jerk and say "suck it up" but I really think Rich needs to be cut some slack. He doesn't get paid to do this; it's not his livelihood to ensure the site is always perfect and up 24/7 - for us to demand that of him really isn't fair. One recommendation I'd make - if you have a post you want to keep for future referencing - right-click, select "View Source" and save that file wherever. It'll at least give you something to work with and you can save it on your own system.

Sure, but it would be mush easier if Rich was some moronic asshole that we all hated. Then we could just take our frustration out on him and move on.

You guys are really tough!  Lighten up a bit, you act like he did it on purpose!!

Rich, if its any consolation, there were a lot of posts worth losing!!  :|

That's a joke, for those of you who can't recognize sarcasm!!!

To prevent this in the future I'm going to find a scrip that backups the database EVERY DAY.  The control panel for the new server is not the same as what we've used before.  There is a going to be a learning curve.  Losing a weeks worth of post and new memebers will not happen again.

^True, and he's not. I have no doubts he feels horrible. I would be, too.

This just hits one of my greatest pet peeves -- having to do the same thing twice which I won't do. I will take MayDay's advice and save all postings in which I've spent some time researching/writing.

^Wow...we lost some new members as well.  That's unfortunate.  As for the posts...all that discussion will eventually come up again, so all is not lost.  I have taken the liberty of doing a couple of summary posts for some recent hot topics.  Topics that may have brought people to the site for further information.  I thought this was worth reposting...other than that the rest of my posts were mainly just some junk.

I usually do that for extra-long posts that take more than one sitting to complete, or if my computer is acting up and I'm worried I might lose a lot of work.

Yeah, I already do that for those long "analyeses" threads I do (with the maps and graphcs). I compose and save a copy, and the post.

I do agree this site has been excellent in terms of being glitch-free.  Very reliable!

Accidents happen, so don't beat yourself up over it.  Everything has a way of sorting itself out.

owwwch!

but good luck with the new sys rich and thx for all you do!

But wouldn't it really have sucked if Rich backed up last week but deleted the rest?

And it'd suck even MORE if ColDay did it!  Oy vey!

Accidents happen all the time.  And these recent weeks (of forum shutdowns, malfunctions, etc) is just "one of those periods" (which happens to be our FIRST period of psychoness).  And as MayDay pointed out earlier, I've ALSO been on SSP for ten years and you want to talk about some issues through the years, go there!
